The Penguins split the two-game series with the Highlanders and will take a 2-5 record into their Horizon League-opening series against Milwaukee this weekend. Radford improved to 7-8.
Radford took advantage of 11 walks and five hit batsmen that were issued by Penguins pitchers.
The Highlanders scored four runs in the bottom of the second on four hits, two hit batters and a walk, and Patrick Marshall's two-run double in the fourth made the score 6-0.
Trevor Riggs hit a solo homer in the fifth, and Radford tacked on five runs in the sixth with the lone hit in the inning being a three-run homer by Hunter Higgerson. Radford added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Youngstown State's three runs came in the top of the ninth on Shane Willoughby's three-run double. He brought in Anthony Rohan, who singled in his first career at bat, Joe King and Kevin Hix.
King finished 2-for-2 off the bench, and Frank Califano and Willoughby also had two hits. YSU had 10 hits in the game, just one fewer than Radford.
YSU starter Jared Wight was charged with four runs in 1.2 innings in the loss. The win went to Radford starter Austin Ross, who allowed two hits in four scoreless innings.
The Penguins will play their Horizon League opener against Milwaukee on Friday at 2 p.m. at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The teams will also play on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
