Dosch Repeats as First-Teamer; Four Other Guins Honored

Youngstown State junior third baseman Drew Dosch repeated as a First-Team All-Horizon League selection, and four of his Penguins teammates also garnered all-league recognition in the postseason vote of the league's coaches.

Dosch is the fourth YSU player to repeat as a First-Team All-Horizon League pick since the Penguins joined the conference in 2001-02. He is also just the fifth repeat all-league player in school history. Juniors Phil Lipari and Josh White were voted second-team all-conference, and White, Nick DiNello and Lance Horner were named to the all-newcomer team.

Dosch batted .338 overall while posting a .434 on-base percentage and a .488 slugging percentage. He picked up the pace in Horizon League play, hitting .372 with a .447 on-base percentage and a .477 slugging percentage. The Canal Winchester, Ohio, native, ranked second in the conference in batting average and on-base percentage while leading the circuit in runs scored, hits, walks and total bases. He posted the top on-base percentage in league play while ranking second in batting average.

Lipari, a shortstop of Poland, Ohio, ranked second in the Horizon League in walks, fifth in doubles and eighth in stolen bases. During conference play, he ranked fifth in doubles and stolen bases and tied-for-seventh in RBIs. Lipari batted .258 overall and .296 in conference play, and he registered on-base percentages of .371 overall and .394 against the conference. Lipari was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week on April 8.

White, a catcher who hails from Eynon, Pa., batted .308 overall and .325 against Horizon League teams in his first season at YSU. In league play he ranked eighth in the conference with a .419 on-base percentage, and he tied for fourth in walks. For the year he tied for the league lead with 24 runners caught stealing, and his six RBIs against Kent State on May 1 were the most by any Horizon League player this season.

DiNello, an outfielder from Boardman, Ohio, didn't receive consistent playing time until the second month of the season but emerged as one of YSU's top hitters. He batted .317 overall and .313 in league play, and he also posted season totals of 22 RBIs, 19 runs and six steals in 39 games. A transfer from Ohio Dominican, his .786 OPS ranked second on the team to only Dosch.

Horner registered a 4.00 ERA over 36 innings in his freshman season. The Rittman, Ohio, native held opponents to 34 hits over those 36 innings while striking out 20 batters. While he did not have a win to his credit, the Penguins won each of his first two starts in Horizon League play. His best outing came when he limited Valparaiso to three runs in 7.2 innings in YSU's 4-3 victory.

Regular season champion Milwaukee won four of the five top individual awards. Michael Porcaro and Jake Long were named the Horizon League Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Mitch Ghelfi was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year, and Scott Doffek was voted the Coach of the Year. Valparaiso's Karch Kowalczyk was named the Relief Pitcher of the Year.
