YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Braxton Chapman
« on: February 15, 2021, 04:23:29 PM »
Our former running backs coach under Pelini is a coach Northern Ill.  Both Chapman and our former tight end have transferred to Northern Ill.  I always thought Chapman should have played more than he did.  Much like Jelani Simmons in basketball. Both were good in my opinion and better than some players getting more time. And they both had a future here.  Not sure what the transfer rules are now under the liberalized NCAA, but if FCS players can transfer to FCS or FBS schools without sitting out a year, all of FCS is in trouble.  Not sure again, but I think basketball is similar or the same rule.

I agree totally with the above opinion. Mays is the only consistent contributor beyond Naz, Akuchie, Covington, and DQ. The rest are lacking for the most part. I hope they just need some experience. Unbelievable how easily the others can be beat off the dribble. And their scoring is mostly hit and miss. The addition of DQ has been the spark to put us over the edge and take the heat of the rest on offense. And Akuchie has been really good, even making 3's at a respectable pace.  I like him best under the basket though. Lets hope it continues tonight.

DQ made the difference in both games. Would have lost both without him. Big help all game, but especially at the end of both games.  Again the new guys didn't contribute much.  Vargo had 2 big 3's and Miles Hunter a big basket at the end of game 2 which was crucial. They need more time to get ready for this level of competition. Also Michael was huge. He needs to spend more time inside and less outside the 3 point line. He and Naz could make a great complementary pair inside.  With DQ back we have a good chance this weekend for a sweep.  Hope so anyway.  He doesn't seem to be favoring the ankle like he did early in the year, but he is not quite back to his old self.  He makes everyone on the team better.

Sure was nice to win the game.  DQ back is big as it takes the heat off of depending on the freshmen in difficult situations at the end of a game.  Basically the freshmen were not a factor in the game except for Mays and his clutch free throws at the end of the game. Kelly surprised me and seems to be a player.  With DQ back, a new Kelly who contributed, Naz and Covington having good games, and Michael having a strong game and making a clutch 3 in OT, we still barely beat the last place team.  With DQ back and with some reps he will be fine. Hope that happens today and we win by a comfortable margin.

Our new players are too in love with 3's and have a poor percentage shooting them. The end of the game was bad with all the 3's and misses and 2 costly turnovers. Detroit has some good 3 point shooters and they seem quicker than us. Our new players get beat off the dribble often and on offense are guarded so closely they have a difficult time getting a clean shot. In some ways we were lucky to keep the game so close. Without an inside presence Detroit can guard the perimeter and we have contested shots which results in a low percentage. Also it seems the new players rush their shots. We are always in a difficult mode on offense with the other teams speed and length. One can see what DQ and Naz would have been together and taking the heat off the others. Hope for DQ's return and for next year some genuine post players. Where is Jelani Simmons?

I agree with the above.  We need DQ to be competitive with our supporting cast and no real post player which hurts our outside game. Our remaining talent is ok in a support role, but not primary players. We shot better than I ever thought possible from 3 and still lost. I don't think a repeat of that can happen today and we will be in trouble. Other teams double Naz inside and the others can't take advantage of that and score.  If we try that on defense, it backfires. Need DQ and some better players. Detroit just looks like they had better players, especially with Davis taking the heat off the others.

Nice win today and much needed to keep the team's attitude up for a learning environment.

Still need to quit taking 3's with players who's ability to make them is 25% or less.  Need to get the ball to the hoop with others beside Naz.  Michael A had a nice game today, but much of it is inside the 3.  When he gets in love with 3's we are in trouble.  Garret also.  Both are big enough to go to the hoop.  When we go inside we have a chance.

Daniel O has surprised me, pleasantly so.  He is a tall guard which improves our defense and when he goes to the basket, he is not so intimidated by the big guys. If he can improve his outside shooting and keep attacking the basket, he will be a great addition as a taller DQ type player. Not that I think he is as good as DQ, but similar with the ability to drive and shoot from the outside as a point guard. Hopefully the other freshman can grow into productive players, both driving to the basket, pulling up for mid range shots, and 3's when they are there, and play defense.  Next week will be interesting to see if this continues, especially with our new guys.

I thought the same thing on the last shot. I guess the refs didn't want to get into that or didn't see it clearly enough to overturn the call.

Disappointing Loss. Poor shooting overall is killing us. At least today they didn't just pass the ball around and throw up 3's like normally done.  Michael A still threw up 2 which were misses after playing a nice game in close which he can be successful at. Surprised that Daniel O played so much.  Garret C was missing at the end of the game when we sure needed him. Not sure why. We need shooters badly. DQ was one and he carried the team last year. Not sure what can be done with this group.  You can't make shooters.

Without DQ we are not good enough in the league.  Without him last year we would have been significantly below 500. He took the heat off of the rest of the team and could score when it was needed.  Also Mays is not as tall as the guards he needs to play against and that hurts on offense and defense.  They stole the ball a few times by trapping him with taller players, especially in the corner right past the time line. And they took advantage on the defensive end at times in the paint. Hopefully with experience he can avoid those problems for the most part. He has potential to be a good player and a difference maker. Our defensive scheme could help him also. The other teams seem to be able to penetrate almost at will and we end up passing the ball around beyond the 3 point line and taking a contested 3.  They get mostly uncontested 3's or drive to the basket. Tough to win that way.

Wow! We were really exposed today. One team looked experienced and the other not so much. Offensive rebounds in the first half were like 11 to 1 against us.  Size is some of it, but experience, effort, etc is also a part of it.  Our new guys are getting a baptism by fire.  I sure hope they learn.

Great game for YSU.  Strong start really helped and the seniors played well with Naz the huge difference.  As the game winded down all the new guys were mostly standing around on offense almost not wanting the ball.  Not Naz, he took control and won the game. He made many strong moves to the basket covered by multiple players and still scored. Just amazing.  Glad for Michael A having a good game.  He had good arch on his 3's and they went in. At times his shot is flat, like a line drive, and the percentages go down. We need his height and experience to be competitive. The freshman are needed but inexperienced and put in really tough situations without much practice or playing time to get ready. Hope for a repeat tomorrow, but Wright State will be motivated and ready. Hopefully the new guys will learn from these games and grow as players.  They have skill and are really needed with Q down for now.

My error.  David is Michael.  But I think anyone who has watched the games would have known.

Big weekend coming.  On national TV on Friday, ESPN2.  Naz will be fine as will Q and Mays. The rest I worry about. We need some mid range production, not just 3's and try's at layups. Our full court pressure needs to be limited or they we kill us with easy baskets. And David and Garret need to be productive for us to have a chance.  The new guys sure have a chance to step up, namely Vargo, Dunn, Hunter, and Traore. Dunn and Traore seem to be tall enough for an inside presence, but Dunn needs to bulk up some to survive inside and Traore probably needs some practice / playing time to get ready. Even David A could be more effective inside and help so much, but he likes to shoot 3's and that is not his game at this time. Unfortunately none of the redshirt freshman seem to be ready to contribute. I am not totally sure who the redshirt freshman are, Ogoro for sure and maybe Ganley.

We need to start fast to have a chance I think.

CSU got too many easy baskets by beating us off the dribble as stated. Our new guys are not up to the defensive skills needed to play man against them.  Maybe zone would have helped, maybe not. Their outside shooting would get us then instead of the layups we gave up. When Mays fouled out we were in big trouble. He is a big part of our offense.  Too bad Jalani is gone, could have helped I think. Last year I would have played him more instead of Devin and he may have stayed.
