I just saw that Western Illinois has canceled the remainder of their football season due to a lack of players at some positions. And after they beat us!

Agree with most of the posts.  The announcers were sure lacking and high school might be too high for them.

Our O line was really exposed, but we didn't have anything to counter their run blitzing on every run down. I could predict run or pass so I am sure Western did also and looked like they were in our huddle.  Our pass blocking was not good so Wade didn't have any time and our receivers were covered. Most throws were short and Western knew it.  Not sure if Wade is enough of a passer to get us out of this run blitzing they did.  I hope it is just poor play calls and a need of an O line improvement and receivers also so they are open. Hard to believe our coaches couldn't come up with something to counter their all out run blitzing.

And 2 special team touchdowns really were the difference with all the other weaknesses we had.  Western should have had 2 more TDs and a field goal or 2 more and it was still close.  Our 2nd half offence was terrible.  They knew our tendencies and brought the house to those tendencies. And they were right most of the time. Other games the other team didn't believe in a total gamble and we were able to survive.  Not last night.

The improvement over the last few games is unbelievable. This week will tell us for sure if what we think as improvement is real. I think it is. The coaches approach to the kids seems really good and shows how much can be done with positive coaching and fundamental teaching. These games are great for our development and evaluating our future needs. So I feel these games are very important to us. And hopefully a few good new freshman and transfers to fill our greatest needs.

Things look good for our future.  DP has a system that players want to play in and they are allowed to make a mistake and not get benched and or called out publicly. Number 8 is the real deal at running back.  His speed and stop and start and change direction allows him to be successful even when the blocking at the point of attack is not there. We need to find a few more like him at other positions that are game changers at the position. Recruiting during the off season will be crucial and our play so far should enhance our ability to get transfers to come in and raise our level of play. And our young assistants on the way up are a better fit for us than older assistants on the way down that we have had in the past, especially under Coach Wolford. Hopeful for our last 3 games, even this Saturday with North Dakota.

I understand the game Saturday is a game of the week for the conference and will not be carried on local TV. Will it be televised nationally or just available on ESPN+ or ESPN3?

We had our chances! Had the lead and the ball with about 5 minutes left and couldn't get a first down. Then their qb fumbles and we have 3 guys there and kick it out of bounds. Then on a tipped ball could have had the interception. Any of those things and we get the win most likely. But it was a great performance by a group of players who were in many ways outmatched. Their O line and D line mostly dominated us physically.  Their qb had time; ours did not. They had big holes to run through and we had small seams at best. Our receivers had no separation and theirs at times had space. We played hard and smart for the most part. Coach is making progress while being undermanned. Future is bright if we can bring in some players for fall and get time for our qb to throw the ball. Hope we can get a few wins going into summer so the attitude can be very positive for progress and growth for the future. It should help recruiting also. There is hope!

Better today by a lot. At least the game is competitive. Glad to see Waid at QB since he gives us the best chance to move the ball. He doesn't go down easy and can sure run the ball with power.  Not sure about the other qbs we have that have not played.  Only question on Waid in my opinion from what I saw is arm strength. Hope it is not so.

At rb we need 8.  LP goes down easy and hurt us on the 2 point try.  20 is a good receiver and hasn't really run the ball that much this year.  Other years his running ability is again not elusive or with power to break tackles.  With Waid and 8 we have the best chance at the run game.

The missed extra point and coming up short on the 2 point try really hurt us in my opinion. Could have been a confidence boost with 14 instead of 12.

The defense at the end of the 1st half really hurt our confidence.  Not sure if it was prevent defense or not, but it really hurt. And the 2nd half SI shut down our run game and we had some dropped passes that hurt. But I liked the last drive we had where we threw the ball down field, not just running. Hopefully next week we can run and throw instead of being so predictable.

The last play in regulation had to be the worst I have seen in a long time.  Too long killing the clock and then not getting any kind of a shot.  Unbelievable. Also letting Michael A guarding Moore the last few possessions and getting beat time after time. Not sure why Mays was out of the lineup at the end, but he had trouble guarding taller players. We in general had a difficult time on defense.  It seemed Oakland was bigger and could get in close over and over and we had to really work to get inside.  And the charge vs blocking calls sure went against us on both ends of the court. The announcers were sure not trying to be unbiased for Oakland.  I think Rob Schmidt does a good job not being a homer compared to those guys. And our new players sure didn't contribute much except for Mays. Who knows what we will look like next year, but the new players need to grow significantly for us to improve even if Naz, Garret, and DQ return. Big questions.

DP is a new hire and like all new hires his success of failure is in question.  JT came here without head coaching experience and was a home run after a few lean years.  BP came here with much success as a head coach and it didn't work out. Give Doug Phillips his chance to get the program going.  What he is instilling in the players is very good.  Can he recruit and develop players? Who knows. That will be the test of whether he is a success or not. And bringing in transfers will help in the short term but hurt in the long term. Let him do what he thinks is best and let the results speak for themselves. All this negative attitude only hurts YSU's chances to attract the players we need for success. Think about it.  It reminds me of the old Vindicator that could only downgrade the city of Youngstown and YSU.  It does no good.

Playing two qb's is not working. As I said last week, we need Waid due to his running ability and size with such a poor offensive line. And at rb we need the new guy compared to our two from last year.  And they need to play to get more comfortable. It reminds me of when Haycock was the coach and we played OSU. He played everyone and we lost big. It was almost like a scrimmage where we weren't trying our best to keep the score as good as it could be. Looked similar today. And our punter really didn't help.  It seems he got a pass until his 2nd or 3rd shank and we got back to the guy from last year who did well.  There is no doubt that we need more good players and that will take time, but playing everyone doesn't give us our best chance in these games. Maybe we are playing this as spring practice.

We need a great effort at Oakland. We have DQ this time which helps a lot.  We also need Michael A to spend much of his time near the basket to help Naz on both offense and defense.  He was a big help in our UIC game inside and did make a 3 or two. Too bad beyond our starters not much help.  Vargo has disappeared after starting for a while this year.  Same with others. I sure hope they improve over the off season. Hopefully we have a good showing at Oakland.

I think we need Waid at QB to have a chance on offense. Our O line is not good enough to have a running game, especially with our smaller running backs. We need Waid to add the bigger runner we so desperately need and the extra person to be concerned about. Craycraft is a more traditional QB who will have trouble without a running game. Maybe later in the year he can do well.

Defense played well but needs more size to be competitive at the highest level. I am hopefully that the D will be acceptable this year and really good in the future.

Coaches looked under control and players played hard. Good for them.

I saw the Vindicator article today.  They didn't even put in the writeup that the game is on local TV, just ESPN+. They sure don't keep up with the local team. Too bad.

I agree that we just stand at the 3 point line with 4 players, wait for an open look that rarely comes, shoot the 3 and get back on defense. Other teams get inside and mid range shots that are open and make them. If 3's aren't falling for us we are in trouble like yesterday. Need more than layups and 3's to win. Yesterday it seems like we worked hard to get inside and it resulted in steals and turnovers on difficult passes and tight quarters. And the other team wasn't all that athletic or tall.

Too many turnovers, mostly steals as we tried to drive to the basket or tried to get the ball inside on difficult entry passes that were low probability to get the ball inside through the defense.  Also not much good outside shooting which has hurt us often this year. And defensive rebounds seemed to disappear in the 2nd half. Hope for a better showing tomorrow.

I know we got a dozen or so mid year transfers.  I thought they were eligible to play this spring. I recall a running back from a lower level school, D2 I think who was highly thought of, who doesn't seem to appear. I didn't check closely, but just how many of those transfers made the two deep for the game?
