YSU Penguin Athletics / The Transfer Portal YSU
« on: December 15, 2022, 02:02:04 PM »
I saw on the news last night that YSU football has 4 players in the transfer portal. I knew of Crenshaw but not any of the others. Anyone know who they are and effect of their loss?

I know the rules are changed for now on the portal. Football has 45 days now and 15 after spring ball for players to enter the portal. The school selecting the player out of the portal need to guarantee the financial support until the player exhaust eligibility, graduates, or leaves the school even if the player decides not to participate in the sport. Designed to cut down on transfers. Also in past years way less than 50% are picked up out of the portal so those entering have to be sure of the decision or suffer not being picked up.

I also saw the other MVFC schools and numbers of those entering the portal. Western was tops at 17 or 18 while SDSU had none. But they are in the playoffs and still playing. Also NDSU had 6.

The Horizon League tournament finished up today and Wright State beat Oakland in the championship game 24 -0! Unbelievable score. Wright State is above the rest of the league in baseball for sure. And the championship format demands many good pitchers for the 4 or more games most would need to play in the bracket. Wright State only played 3 games and won them all, getting the benefit of winning the regular season title. Oakland was 2nd. Oakland had played 3 and were in their 4th game so their pitching was thin. Oakland beat YSU twice by 2 -0 and 4 - 2. YSU beat Purdue Fort Wayne 6 - 0 and Northern Kentucky  11 - 7.  Our pitching was remarkably good in the tournament but our offense was lacking. One thing I noticed is that many of the teams had players from all over the map and we only had mostly somewhat local players. The transfer portal hurt us losing 5 players. Not sure what we got in return, but it did not measure up to our losses of talent. Need to work the portal better this coming season much like football, MBB, and WBB who did well in the portal. A new world in college sports these days. And probably our recruiting budget and overall budget is less than the other schools. All in all not a bad showing in the tournament. And Matt Brosky, our great starting pitcher, made the all-tournament team with a 3 hit complete game shutout in less than 100 pitches. He may get drafted as scouts were at the games.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU vs UIC MBB
« on: February 05, 2022, 05:58:41 PM »
Survived today with a close win that could have gone either way.  Dwayne Cohill saved the day in my opinion with his drives to the basket late in the game when most of our players just passed the ball around the 3 point line. At the end UIC's full court press was really effective against us and almost cost us the game. It looks good when they to it and it looks bad when we try it! Anyway it is a four game win streak I think going into the Oakland game at home Wednesday. A tall task, but we wil give it a go.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Cleveland State

Was at the game today. Disappointing to say the least. I thought Shemar, Myles, Daniel, Dwayne, and Tevin played great. But inside we were completely over matched as they got shot after shot and rebound after rebound. Rebounding was bad and inside defense bad also. And the refs didn't go our way in my opinion. The last play for us in regulation with Dwayne driving to the basket and no foul called sealed our fate. Cleveland State got all the easy inside baskets all game and we had to fight for our points. Many plays hurt us and all we needed was one more in regulation. They are the better team and our chances against them in Cleveland are not good. Our inside game killed us. Surprised by no Jamir all game. Who knows what the coaches are thinking about players to help inside, but he gives us a chance physically where the others do not.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU WBB vs Penn State
« on: December 12, 2021, 08:43:14 AM »
I see that the game today is not televised on the BIG 10 network, but is streamed on the BIG 10+ streaming network.  This is much like the ESPN+ option we are familiar with.  The BIG 10+ costs $10 per month or $80 per year.  So limited availability for us.

Not sure if Lilly is playing today which we desperately need to have any chance in the game in my opinion. Any updates on her availability?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Radio and TV Coaches Shows
« on: August 29, 2021, 07:08:15 PM »
I see on the YSU Athletics Web Site the following:

TV show on WFMF 21 on Wednesday nights at 7, I assume beginning this coming Wednesday.

Radio show on 1390 AM on Monday night 5 till 7. Also held live at Quaker Steak and Lube, this Monday, August 30, at the Boardman location. Also there on Tuesday, September 7, and Mondays August 20 and 27.  The August 13 show is at the Warren / Cortland location.

Not much on the football team on this site, the Vindicator, or local TV and radio.  Too bad, maybe these shows will begin some interest.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Other Sports
« on: April 26, 2021, 10:45:13 AM »
Not much on here about the minor sports at YSU, some of which are doing from respectable to very good.  I follow baseball, softball, track, bowling, and golf mostly.  In the past many time these sports were at the bottom of the standings year after year.  Now it seems only volleyball is on hard times.   Bowling just competed in the final four of D1 bowling. Softball is in first place and on the verge of hosting the league championship tournament. Baseball is in 3rd place and is the only team to beat first place Wright State, 3 times in 8 games against them.  Top 4 teams make the tournament. Track and field are perennial champs in that area with Brian Gorby doing an outstanding job for many years.  Women's golf is very competitive and Men's golf is respectable.  They are currently in the league tournament and the women's team is in 1st place. So overall I think the minor sports are competitive and not an embarrassment like many years in the past. Of all the bashing on this site of Ron Strollo and his management, I think he has done a great job in all sports given the limited recourses we have compared to the competition. In all cases our competition does not sponsor football at the FCS full scholarship level and in most cases are in markets much larger than ours and many more business that are successful and can donate to college sports teams and facilities. Think about raising money for an update of our basketball facilities in Youngstown compared to Cleveland, Detroit, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, or Chicago. That is what we are up against. We need to be good to accomplish what we have in that environment.

Big weekend coming.  On national TV on Friday, ESPN2.  Naz will be fine as will Q and Mays. The rest I worry about. We need some mid range production, not just 3's and try's at layups. Our full court pressure needs to be limited or they we kill us with easy baskets. And David and Garret need to be productive for us to have a chance.  The new guys sure have a chance to step up, namely Vargo, Dunn, Hunter, and Traore. Dunn and Traore seem to be tall enough for an inside presence, but Dunn needs to bulk up some to survive inside and Traore probably needs some practice / playing time to get ready. Even David A could be more effective inside and help so much, but he likes to shoot 3's and that is not his game at this time. Unfortunately none of the redshirt freshman seem to be ready to contribute. I am not totally sure who the redshirt freshman are, Ogoro for sure and maybe Ganley.

We need to start fast to have a chance I think.

I see that Addy Jarvis who pitched for us last year as a freshman and did very well is now on the University of Illinois team.  A somewhat local player from Matthews High School.  Any input on how this happened?  I see she has pitched in 8 or so games this year so I guess she isn't sitting out a year due to the transfer.

Pitching is the name of the game in baseball, but even more so in Softball.  Big loss for our season.

Women win again today at Detroit.  I know Detroit is struggling, but it is a win without some of our top players. Jen got hurt in the 3rd quarter, our last taller player.  Hope she and McKenzie can be back for the weekend's games.

YSU Penguin Athletics / WBB vs Eastern Kentucky
« on: December 03, 2019, 10:02:55 PM »
Watched the game tonight on ESPN+.  Down by 15 in the first half and come back to win by 10 or so.  Great comeback. Lacking height for sure, but played smart and number 22 was outstanding off the bench.  She was the main reason for the spark that got us the win.  Will be difficult without an inside presence. Many easy baskets by EKU inside off rebounds etc.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Football Practice Schedule

Wanted to attend a practice or two.  Is there a schedule published as yet?  Also Saturdays usually had a scrimmage.  Is there one this Saturday?  Time?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Last Game of the Season
« on: June 07, 2019, 06:39:44 PM »
Just watched our final game of the season again, Illinois State 35 - YSU 28.  Really disappointing.  The only player to stand out for us was Tevin Macaster in my mind.  I sure hope the returners from this team grow into better players for this coming year with more enthusiasm.

I think Baseball is 0-13 and softball is 1-10.  Both have batting averages below 200 and many K's.  Some is against difficult southern competition, but not all.  I sure hope they have a turnaround or it will be a long season for them.
