Why would be an embarrassment to join or start another league.  WHATS EMBARRASSING is being in a league with no natural rivalry and we made what 3 playoff appearances in 23 years and declining attendance and interest.

I don’t think there will be 3 different D1’s.  With NIL and TV contracts it’s going to hurt FCS even more.  We are in a bad spot with that.  I think if anything with declining enrollment and let’s not forget most of our athletic budget is paid by the students.  We are no better than the MAC .  Just a smaller budget we can barely afford

MAC gets

The MAC-ESPN contract runs through at least 2026, and pays each of the 12 MAC football schools at least $1 million a year, significant cash for mid-major schools always feeling the budget crunch. ESPN also provides exposure during a time, midweek, when it has the football fans' focus to itself.

The crowd at the Montana NDSU game is fantasic, kudos to the Griz fans!

26,544 fans at the game and they have 19,000 season ticket holders. That's a lot of extra cash to pay for coaches.

Yes the Grizz atmosphere was good.  All this game showed me was Montana wasn’t overrated.  Plus we would lose to both teams.

I just looked up the Albany-Villanova game. Villanova had five turnovers; Albany had none.

As others have noted, Villanova is the only CAA team that has the size and strength up front to compete in the MVFC. With James Madison and Delaware now gone, the CAA has become Villanova and the (fill-in the blank) dwarfs.

The CAA joins the Southern Conference, once the home of multiple championship teams Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Appalachian State, as a second rate FCS conference.

As we remain an irrelevant program in the irrelevant FCS.

Could’nt agree more I never understood the fascination of being in the fourth fifth or or six best team in a conference that we don’t fit in with no natural rivalries and very hard to travel. If we were in the CAA, we would be with Villanova like Dakotas, and be a top team every year and make the playoffs a lot easier and with that would come a higher seed and more home games instead of being a middle of pack team as we are now. But Mike was said in his post the FCS will become more irrelevant.
I don’t see anything positive staying in the conference or wait. Maybe we should hang a banner Youngstown State plays in the toughest conference in FCS football and we made the playoffs three times in 20+ years ha ha ha ha we can put that next to the championship flags don’t get me wrong, I love Youngstown State but when you look at this from the big picture being in his Conference has been nothing but a failure look at this they brought in Murray state, not for football, but do the basketball program. Why aren’t we in? why aren’t we in this conference? I know the answer because we don’t have the money that the schools have for the most part that’s another story but again hey, we played a toughest conference and FCS and congratulations for that and let’s be honest we got a bottom feeder playoff team as a reward we would opened up on the road  against Villanova we have been one and done but again I’m still pro these guys and I understand we’re never gonna leave the conference as long as the AD supports it .  Another thing just because those teams suck. I got to the final four doesn’t matter. It just proves my point due to a conference got them to that point they didn’t have to beat their heads into the wall like we have done year after year hoping praying that we get in.  Go penguins.

Dude, the 93 and 94 teams were littered with legit D1 players that either stayed home or transferred back. Tressel worked that like a master. There probably aren’t more than a small handful of kids on the current roster that could have played for those teams. FCS 2023 is D2 when compared to 1AA in the 90s

Nova is correct back when Trestle was here specially, with the early 90s teams we had many D1 players. Another advantage he had even though he said he recruited a state of Youngstown. He recruited the city series schools very well plus the local area had more talent which has been reduced Due to population shrinking and the loss of manufacturing jobs and people moving away especially from Packard and GM. Another reason back then too one AA was only about 80 teams now I think it’s over 100+ I didn’t check but I know it’s more division one has increased as well , so Phillips does have a harder job and recruiting elite players. So going back to what power was saying that we could probably just have a game manager for a QB that’s true but it always hurts us now when we play the better teams Davidson was system quarterback, and he did  Have an elite running back for one year and he had a elite receiver for two years, but he was limited and it showed at times.
Football is about the QB at all levels now QB has to be accurate and make a decisions and be elusive. It seems that Youngstown state we get a QB but he’s missing one of the attributes and I need to be developed.

WOW!! Another wasted scholly on a QB project!! BB (6-0) is too short for FCS football, right?? Ask the kid from Albany (5-11), Baker from SIU (5-9) nothing good ever became of them.

Need to spend schollies on defense!

YSU football the home of incompetence.

GooooGuins!!
Baker played like crap against us.  As for BB, the coach wouldn’t let him throw so WTH knows what he can do.

Guins rank ~ 17.

Geeeessshh! Keep hearing that name Wolford and talent.. Last I checked all that talent didn't win squat?! Must have been he couldn't coach, or no one wanted to play for a drunken azzhole.. Beat Pitt lost to 2-8 MO State?!?

Ole Wolf needs to be a recruiter for the Guins. Maybe the world would become perfect again.

Wasn’t defending Wolford, as a coach he had alot of to learn, and our defense cost us. There were some bad defeats really bad it seemed like November was his demise.  We were horrible in November.  Alabama has him now maybe he will learn something from Saban.

Everyone has good points. Something’s to ponder if this was 10-20 years ago didn’t they only choose 12 or 16 teams. The playoffs have been watered down.  Phillips is not the messiah here. Yes he has improved the team but it’s not close in talent to any of Wolfords teams.  Wolford beat Pitt.  What’s Phillips signature win.  Phillips has not come close to recruiting as Wolford.  As for where are in the scheme of things we are s middle of a pack conference team that couldn’t or can’t beat the top 4 Teams.  We played a schedule with no Bison on it.  We weren’t going to beat them and with that loss we would have been 6-5. No better than previous years and previous coaches

Let's not forget that Tressel, with the exception of Ken Connatzer (sp?) and veteran high school coach Bob Stoops, had a very young coaching staff. Some of these guys advanced to become prominent head coaches and coordinators. And that was an era when P5 assistants were not making too much more money than IAA head coaches.

The issue is not that Phillips has a young staff; the issue is does he have the right staff? Can these guys grow into good coaches and move on, to be replaced by the next generation of ambitious young men? Right now I feel that the problem with our defensive coaches is not their youth but rather their basic competence. You can't evolve in your profession if you lack the ability to be in that profession.

The last good defensive coach we had really was Heacock and I guess you could say the Pelliini as well but they had the horses upfront to get the job done if you remember the Heacock era, we have many all Americans on a defensive line at linebacker and in the secondary so it does take players as well as coaches, and like what was said in the previous post head coach has to make the correct hire

We shall see if Brady Shannon is rusty.   Not a bad get but we will need more transfers a that position

Did he get any D1 offers to play QB when he came out of HS? If I recall, Crenshaw was also a 3 star recruit who could run but not pass. I hope this guy could do better.

Thanks for the insight but a recruit with no experience has been out of football for a few years isn’t the answer as a starter and a D1 program. We’ve had plenty of quarterbacks that could run and not pass and let us to mediocre results. Sounds like this guy is a project he needs time to develop.

43
Well we lost in the second round so no better than 9th  but prolly lower anround 12th Even with the win it brought very little buzz to the community.  Going to take a lot to get that back if they can.  We were not a top 10 team with that Defense.  And if we still had The Bison on the schedule instead of Murray we wouldn’t have made it

watched some of the nova/bunny game today, do not feel so bad about our loss to Nova. They were legit, gave SDSU all they could handle.

100% Agree, Villanova was an extremely good team.

I watched a lot of it Villanova played well their QB made a few mistakes and their coach probably should have went for it on 4th and 1.   Weather and SD line wore on them as they got deep into the game.  Nova is better then us.

Looks like we might of lost a few more guys in the portal it’s crazy.  Looks like we offered a RB Robinson from Duquesne.  As well.  Anybody close to the program know if some were told to go.  FCS is dead if this is the new model.
