YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Dont leave the MVFC!

Lakesbison,

We are not going anywhere.  We would need to increase our athletic budget by about $10 million to compete in all sports with the fools in the MAC who pretend to be "Big Time" football programs.  That will not happen.  The only chance we might leave the MVFC would be for an opportunity in a football-only CAA, which would reduce travel costs somewhat and give us exposure in the very large east coast markets.  But that is highly unlikely.  Again, we are here to stay.  Looking forward to many years of good football against you guys.

Softball also beat Akron once and then tied the second game due to darkness.  Should have swept if not for some poor defense on easy plays.

If this guy can play like Eargle, how is that a bad thing?  Two Eargles are much better than one Eargle. :P
6'10" plus jucos who can actually play are scooped up by programs much more significant than ours, as IP just noted right before I posted this.

I am still not convinced that the pitchers will hold up against the better teams in the Horizon League.  But this is indeed a welcomed start to the season.  It was a shame they gave away one game to an unimpressive Butler team on Saturday with physical and mental errors.  But they did manage to win the next two.

Indy, I don't know if he played in high school.  My impression is that we have plenty of talented tight ends.  However, if Ward will run down the field and hit somebody on special teams he could be a valuable asset.

No big deal.  Taylor had his chance as a juco last season and could not earn a position.  Austin was a walk-on who could not help us.  Finally, we should have some talent and depth in the secondary by the fall.

4,

I don't know the answer to that, but I certainly hope so.  We understand that they lack the money right now, but hopefully have incorporated a track in the design for the future.

Nick,

The renovations at Duquesne are interesting.  There is no reason (except for finances of course) that we could not install permanent seating on all levels in Beeghly Center.  With the construction of the Watts, the student rec center, and the availability of that 100 yard gym under the stadium for phys.ed. classes, there is no longer any need to roll back all the seats in our gym.

The problem with Youngstown sports culture is that tribal attitudes formed in the high schools last for a lifetime.  Enough already.  Is it too much to ask that you refrain from such tribal in-fighting on a college board?

Pizza, stop with this Mooney glorification and stop bashing other high schools.  And as a Mooney graduate, I have a perfect right to tell you that.  You belittle our alma mater with such childish behavior.  Successful people and successful institutions have no need whatsoever to brag about themselves.

This great star just scored a resounding three points as his team was blown away in the regional tournament.  To reinforce the point IP was making, 99% of the population have absolutely no idea how good an athlete must be to play D1 basketball - or D1 football for that matter.

Ridiculous.  Form a team with the five players from the Horizon League and have them compete against these five from the Summit League.  A front court of Brown from Green Bay and the twin towers from Valpo along with a back court of McCallum and Perry.  I would give the Summit League 25 points and it would not even be that close.

So on the all-star teams from ONE Indiana county we find six Big Ten recruits and another kid going to West Virginia.  Plus Georgia State, Kent, Ball State, Detroit, and us.  I was happy to get this kid before; I am delighted now.  There is no possibility that he could earn such high honors without being a D1 player.

Anyone want to bet that Mahoning and Trumbull counties have never sent six players to the Big Ten?  Forget about one class; I mean EVER.

Geez, forgot all about Brown. OK, so three in about a decade.  Words like terrible and pathetic don't even do justice to this situation.

High school basketball in the Mahoning Valley stinks.  Being the best conference in that environment means absolutely nothing.  This young man is like a thousand other kids: he can shoot if he is open.  Some of them are playing at the college level that they belong-Division 3.

When Eargle finishes next season, I think that he will be the first Valley kid to complete all four years in D1 basketball in over a decade.  Our few basketball-centric fans will correct me if that impression is incorrect, but the statement is not off by much.  In the Mahoning Valley, for every D1 basketball recruit over the span of a decade there are 100 D1 football recruits.  The best athletes usually only play football.  That is the culture.  And the lack of any type of local base is one of the big problems for YSU basketball.

For a kicker, somebody convince A.J. Fox to come home.  I read somewhere that he was Akron's leading scorer with 8 field goals. ;D  He is wasting his time in that putrid program.  Even if Bowden turns it around, and it is much more likely he will be Faust, part two, that team won't be competitive for at least three more years.  Much better that Fox comes home, wins big, and has fans actually remembering that he still exists.

Lecter, remember that they are moving the kickoff back up to the 35 yard line.  That will help us, big time.

Let's look at our team sports, besides track and football.

Volleyball.  A disaster area that suffered from a string of poor coaches.  A new coach must now build from scratch.

Soccer.  This coach has actually improved this squad defensively to the point where we are in most games.  Need to recruit more firepower.  Probably trending up.

Men's basketball.  What you see is what you get from Slocum.  Some like him.  Some don't.  Take your pick.

Women's basketball.  Boldon has one exceptional but undersized big girl, two good freshmen, and little else besides a few three point shooting specialists.  Trending up despite the many losses this season.

Baseball.  On a course to actually make volleyball look good.

Softball.  If this third year coach can find two pitchers that can handle Horizon League batters, he might succeed.  If not, well... .
