YSU Penguin Athletics / It’s officially Football Season
« on: March 07, 2024, 09:50:27 PM »
Ok. Now that we got another disappointing basketball season behind us. Time to focus on spring ball and who our starting QB is going to be!  Looking forward to spring practice and see who starts to make some moves.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Illinois State Week
« on: October 16, 2023, 09:37:34 PM »
Ok. Now that we are like a Jekyll and Hyde type team, what do we need to do to run the table starting this week with ILSU?  We have dug a deep hole. My biggest concern is our inability to put 4 quarters together. We have spurts where we look like a NC level team and times we look like we can’t beat Ursuline. Disappointing that we score 41 and 31 on the road and lose.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Bobby Mo week
« on: September 12, 2023, 10:51:57 AM »
Say all you want about OSU game, we need those games to survive financially. Plain and simple. Onto Bob Mo. need to put together a solid 3 quarters and blow them out and get reps for backups. Get King involved in the O and play action!  Secondary needs to clean some things up but the front 7 are solid and held OSU to 133 yards. They relied on pass game to wear us down. Clean up the issues. Take the next week off to prepare for a road trip to the worst dome in the country!  Jimmy Buffett Day at the lot. Penguin Fins Up!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Coach Phillips

Heard a rumor. Not sure if it is true. DP turned down a $700,000 offer from Fickell at Wisconsin to go coach up there. Not sure if the position that was offered but I can’t see him being a position coach. Maybe some administrative position. He did work with him when he was at UC so there may be some truth to it.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Portal Talk
« on: November 29, 2022, 12:54:22 PM »
Following a lot of portal Twitter feeds and there are a lot of players available. I am seeing other FCS school making offers but nothing from YSU. Hopefully we are on top of some of these and making offers.

We will see if we get some respect with this decision. I know the kid from Monmouth had a great year but…breaking the all time NCAA rushing title and you don’t win this…means only one thing. We get no respect.

YSU Penguin Athletics / SIU Week
« on: November 17, 2022, 08:39:39 AM »
I can see there is very little interest in this game which is what you would expect. I too am very frustrated with coaching in situations that cost us points. Hopefully there will be changes this winter. One thing I found interesting in listening to DPs presser was that he kept mentioning playoffs. I am wondering if they know something we don’t. Possibly some back door possibility with the #1 NCAA RB in history to get an opportunity to display talent on national scene for a playoff game?  Or was he just saying that to keep team interested in game??  I don’t think 7-4 gets us in but stranger things have happened with this committee. Needless to say. I will be there to support the players, seniors and veterans.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Mo State Week
« on: November 09, 2022, 12:44:57 PM »
We will face the best QB we have seen to date. Must win with UND facing NDSU last game and SIU facing SDST this week. Cannot make any mistakes and have to have a two score lead going late into the game. Can’t rely on lightning striking 3 times on the road with a last minute drive. Have to pressure the QB and contain his running ability. Something we have struggled with all year. Have to dish out miles of yardage on the ground and keep their offense off the field. Looking forward to being in the hunt these last two weeks.

Anyone go?  Had another commitment.

Thoughts on NIL signees today?

Tay'Shawn Trent from Harper Woods HS looks like a nice pick up - WR.

Need OL though!!  Hopefully that has been a priority with returning lineman and some early additions in December.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2021 Football Recap - Spring and Fall
« on: November 23, 2021, 01:05:22 PM »
Time to recap the season! Overall, I would give the program a C+ for a final grade.  There were definite highlights to the season and low lights that in many cases, over shadowed the highs.  The fact that 6 teams from the MVFC made the playoffs tells everyone the conference is legit for FCS and the sets the bar for competitive football. Even if they are watered down.  The fact that we beat 3 playoff teams is a plus. We should have been 6-4 this season! The team never quit all year, unlike teams from the Pelini era.  I like what I am seeing in Crenshaw, but we need a solid back-up that offers that same 1-2 punch of being able to throw and run when Crenshaw is not in the game. Having a back up that is one dimensional is an issue and defenses can tee off on the QB.

We have to make sure Jaleel does not leave, rumor has it he is looking to be invited to the NFL Combine?? Not sure that is true but whatever he does, we have to make sure he does not enter the portal, AGAIN! Would like to see two back sets but I will complain about that forever - would also like to see Crenshaw under center more!!

We will need to replace some WR and a tight end.  Tight ends are killers and we need to utilize that position more!

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit and live by the portal and die by the portal.  Have to find OL and DL now to stabilize those positions into the future.  If we want to compete and beat UNI, SDSU and NDSU - the OL and DL have to put on 40 pounds across the board and move like tight ends.  We will not be able to compete in this conference until that happens.  A great OL makes a mediocre RB look great.  If Jaleel had a solid and consistent OL - he would have doubled his yardage!!

Coaching can always be improved and hopefully this staff learned a lot about the MVFC and what it takes to win  in the meat grinder of a schedule. The offseason is when championships are won.  The staff has its first full offseason, let's see how they do!!  I say we need 10 D1 transfers to make an impact next year until recruits can step up.  Pelini era lack of recruiting set this team back 4 years.  I like what DP is doing, heard is out the next two weeks recruiting and hitting it hard and traveling around to get the bodies he needs to win. I like the schedule next year - no UNI or SDSU - time to take advantage of that!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Fighting ??? Forget what they are called now?!?!?
« on: November 03, 2021, 06:19:33 PM »
Well. First trip to UND dome. Is Crenshaw healthy?  Will Davidson get the start if he isn’t?  Will we be able to block anyone?  Will the defensive line put pressure on the QB and not expect the secondary to cover for 10 seconds?  Lots of questions!! Not a lot of answers so far.

Must win on the road!  Heard they have the number one defensive player in sacks and tackles for loss. Need to control the line!  Win this. Go 3-3 into the meat grinder at the end of the year.
