YSU Penguin Athletics / Marcus Hooker
« on: May 20, 2022, 11:56:15 AM »
On campus yesterday and today.  Former Buckeye, brother Malik played at Ohio State now in NFL with Cowboys.  Has his degree from Ohio State.  Would be a game changer at safety for YSU.  Has had issues off the field, hopefully has his life on track.  Being from New Castle, maybe he wants to be close to home.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU football d Coordinator leaving?
« on: January 25, 2022, 03:44:38 PM »
Just heard from a good source that Joe Schaefer is leaving.   Coach Phillips was high on him and he came in with Phillips.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Missouri Valley All Conference Team
« on: April 22, 2021, 04:27:48 PM »
No YSU player on first team.  Thought maybe Jaleel McLaughlin deserved it, but when you look at the numbers that Otis Weah at North Dakota and Pierre Strong at SDSU put up, they both deserved first team.

Player of the year is the true freshman QB from SDSU, Mark Gronowski.  We just don't have the talent on this roster to consistently compete and win.  DP has a lot of work to do.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Spring football expectations
« on: February 17, 2021, 10:58:38 AM »
I am by no means being negative, and I wish Coach Phillips the best, he appears to be a great guy with a passion and he will connect with the fans.

But I saw the roster and 2 deep.  Only 3 seniors starting on defense, 27 red shirt freshman on defense.  On offense Dan Becker is the lone starter on the line with any game experience.  It is going to take him time to recruit and turn over this roster.  I think anything better than 2-6 this spring would be a good start for him.

Also, the conference didn't do him any favors by starting with the number 1-3-5 teams in the country in the first four games.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Missouri Valley cancels media day
« on: August 07, 2020, 08:34:32 AM »
The Missouri Valley Conference canceled its scheduled Monday media day, and will not reveal the preseason all conference selections today which was the original plan.

It appears The Big Sky is likely going to cancel football as well, meaning there are probably not enough FCS conferences to have the playoffs.  The Missouri Valley could be a regular season, but with no post season.  It appears that is unlikely.

YSU has accepted to play in the CIT post season tournament.  They have also bought the first two games and will host next Wednesday, March 18th and again on the 21st if we win the opener.  It would be great to host a MAC school.

How much longer will Coach Calhoun be at YSU?  With the team in position to be potentially 1st or 2nd the next two years, and if somehow he could get to the NCAA tournament, then I think 2 years at most.   I know he likes it here.  But his goal is a big time job.  In my opinion, he has it all to someday be in the big time.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2019 YSU FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:26:07 AM »
The 2019 YSU football schedule is finalized.  12 games, and 7 at home.  Opener is August 24 vs Samford.  Then three lightweights: Howard, Duquesne, and Robert Morris.  Yes, I know we lost to Butler, but at worst YSU should be 3-1 heading into conference play.  No FBS game.

I think it is a joke playing three scrimmages and asking fans to pay regular ticket prices.   YSU refuses to schedule home and home a quality non-league game against other strong FCS opponents.  Same old, same old, and they ask why people don't go to the games.

YSU needs Mark Waid to jump start this program, and provide a spark.  If he is not the answer, then this program is in a lot of trouble.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU FOOTBALL MOVING FORWARD
« on: November 15, 2018, 08:59:40 AM »
This may be a better topic for next week after the season, but here goes.  On the radio broadcast last Satruday and on the Dan Rivers show this week, Bob Hannon and Ed Muransky said it is close to 100% that Bo Pelini will return next year.  They are both close the program, they know something.

That being said, this football program is broken.  If that is true, then YSU and Pelini should announce an extension on Monday.  Recruits are making their decisions now, and most make their college choice on who the coach is.   We will get buried in recruiting if this continues for months.  Our young talent is not that good, YSU needs a great recruiting class.   If Pelini doesn't agree to be the face of recruiting and get out there to close deals, then YSU needs to move on and find a new coach.  I have always thought he was an average head coach, and a great D coordinator.  I think he will be back, what are his options?  He came here I believe to revive his career, and it has gone the other way, his stock as a head coach has gone through the basement.

Pelini needs to address his staff issues.  Brian Crist mismanaged this offense all year.  Last week was the first game plan that made sense, get the ball to McCaster.  He had 8 carries vs ND ST.

The program has become irrelevant locally, other than the most loyal fans.  Look at the crowds, maybe 1000 the last two games.

I could go on and on, but lastly how do you lose to Butler?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Football recruiting
« on: November 05, 2018, 08:44:35 AM »
There are many reasons YSU Football is in the position they are in, but recruiting issues may be the biggest.  Bo has made it clear he doesn't like recruiting, that is ridiculous.  He is a name, and in NE Ohio he should be closing the deal on top talent.

Our young talent is not good enough to compete in this conference.   I attended the Girard vs East game on Saturday night, Girard QB Mark Waid can play here, and potentially be a star.   Early on he verbally committed to Fordham,  YSU showed little interested.  Now, YSU is on him , but it might be too late.

If Mays is our QB next year, and plays this style, he likely won't make it through the season.  Just about every team in our conference is far superior at QB.  Program is a mess.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU FOOTBALL COORDINATORS
« on: January 09, 2018, 01:15:44 PM »
I am hearing it is a done deal that Brian Crist will be the new offensive coordinator.  He is currently the wide receivers coach.   Bo knows his needs better than us, but was hoping he would bring in an experienced play caller. Hope Crist is ready.

Also likely Richard McNutt D coordinator, that was written on this site long ago, but not a done deal.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU Basketball Coaches suspended?
« on: November 15, 2017, 12:51:12 PM »
I heard this morning that two YSU Basketball Coaches are suspended; one for 10 games. the other for four games, he didn't know names.  The person that told me has never given me bad info.   Anyone else know anything?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Penguin Playbook/Pelini
« on: October 10, 2017, 10:41:01 AM »
I usually listen to Penguin Playbook on Monday night, and several of the shows Pelini has been a no show, including last night.  Would have helped to have him on and hype Saturday's game.  Isn't this show really the coaches show?  And the coach not there.

What I do like is that Hannon gets opposing play by play guys on.  ND St guy last night said this may be there best defense they have ever had.

I was just told that YSU is cancelling the spring game, scheduled for this Friday because of potential bad weather.  There will be no make-up date.
