YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Assistant Coaches
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:20:01 AM »
Wolford did not have the last say on play calling. Maybe on a 4th down or out of a timeout, but for the most part, Montgomery calls the plays... And when you get shut out in half of league games in the 2nd half, that's a problem. This will not change as long as he's here.
This is absolutely correct. Wolf's background is an OL coach. He has probably never called a play on his own. Monty would certainly listen to his advice but most OC's don't want someone else in their head when they are trying to think.

YSU is looking for an offensive coordinator.

https://jobs.ysu.edu/postings/1371

Go to the upper left hand corner and click on "search Jobs". This is the openings for all the coaches positions (including strength coach, OC, and the position coaches). They renew all of them every year. This doesn't mean Monty is leaving, it's just time to renew the 12 month contract for them all.

Was it someone who was kicked out of an FBS school and was just alot better than what we had? Just curious. I guess i could see that scenario with a D lineman or maybe a D-back but not a running back, quarterback, or wide receiver. Maybe I'm wrong.

I hope the guys that are considering transferring at least wait until the new staff is in place, and they go through spring ball.

It doesn't work that way. If you are going to transfer and have any hopes of starting somewhere in the Fall, you would transfer during Christmas break and do Spring ball with your new team. If not you would be going into Fall camp as an unknown and try to learn a new offense in 2-3 weeks. I've never heard of that happening.

It looks like Dante landed at Slippery Rock University. Good Luck Dante!

He would have been gone regardless. He ended up 3rd on the depth chart by the end of the year. I wish him the best.

We are in good hands with Wells and Davis IMHO.

If they stay....

RICKY DAVIS IS GOING NOWHERE! He loves his school and his teammates. That being said, Dante is a very good friend of Ricky's and he understands why he left. We wish Dante and his family the very best!

Thanks for the math primer so I guess if you throw 14 tds vs 7 ints means he is doing a decent job.

It depends. Did the QB throw bubble screens or hit the back out of the backfield and watch them run 40 yards for the 14 TD's or did he stand up like a man and throw those TD's down the field into tight windows for score's? Also the 7 INT's on the year should have been 14 had the defenders caught the balls thrown right to them. You cannot argue that, including what should have been a pick 6 yesterday.

And YSU dropped its fair share of INTs as well!!!  That is a part of the game.  Or what about tipped balls that turn into INTs?  Or receivers who aren't where they're supposed to be?  Wells, I think he can be really good.  Hopefully he reflects on this season and comes out a better player next season.  He can be put under the microscope now, but I don't think that would be fair.  Let's talk Hunter Wells and how good he can be during/after next season.

As an ex QB and a HS Qb coach, I hate that tipped balls and bad routes go against the Qb stats and I agree that Wells can be good. I just think he and YSU would have been better served had he red shirted. Dante could have won 7 games at least and Hunter could have learned a lot by watching for a year (especially how to read defenses) It's hard to learn when you're thrown into it the way he was. Like it or not, as of today, he is a Sophomore QB and 2 of the top 3 MVFC QB leaders this year were Sophomores, I hope the excuses for him start to fade away.

Wells 2 tds...what can we find negative about that Pally.  How many games did your boy Angle start...oh tbats right none and he quit on his team to play what D3 ball.

Anytime you throw more interceptions than you do TD's it's a negative. Especially when NDSU scored off all 3 takeaways.  :)

I guess the MVFC got tired of dropping all those easy INTs that Wells had been throwing....

But they are not his fault.

You guys really think putting a 3rd string QB is the answer. Blaming  Wells is ridiculous.   Montgomery  showed nothing so far...

Hunter is 3 of 9 for 24 yards with 2 interceptions and a QB rating of 11 for the half but it's not his fault. Let me guess, it's Monty's fault.  ;)

The bottom line is we wasted the opportunity to take control of the game early on with the 3 fumbles. For whatever reason this team lacks the enthusiasm needed on this level. Hats off to the Indiana state defense. Wells had very little time to throw all day and they did a great job pressing our receivers all game..we had problems getting any kind of separation.  That's something we don't do enough of on defense or maybe just don't have the personnel to do so. Wells was a big part of the wins over S.D.S.U. , S.I., and S.D. and if it wasn't for his 2 4th Quarter drives there wouldn't have been a overtime. I dont think it was the worst play call or throw in the world the defender made a great play end of story-off to N.D.S.U.

Why is it "HIS" 2 4th qtr drives, because they were successful? The people who fumbled the ball earlier got all the yardage in these drives not Hunter. When something good happens it's all him, when he does something bad, it's like it didn't happen or it's everybody elses fault...coaches, players, or that he's a Freshmen. Funny. ::) OT was a new game. Sudden Death.  His pick DID cost us the game.

The reason we lost was because of 3 fumbuls.  Bottom linr

I disagree... we made it to OT with the 3 fumbles. We lost because of the interception Hunter Wells threw!!! OT is the beginning of a "new" game. We got one play. It wasn't Wolford's fault. It wasn't Monty"s fault. It was Hunter's fault! He was handed the job without earning it because he was the area's "boy" and yesterday we paid for it. Paladin called it back in August and it came true. The coaches will pay for their decision with their jobs as it should be, but people should put the blame where it truly lies. The interception cost us the game and the season...bottom line.

Man, Hunter can't lose can he? If he plays good he's the next Bart Starr and if he plays bad it's Monty's fault. That is a nice position to be in isn't it.  ::)

Since no one wants to believe it, I say bring Wells on. Its just games to lose so some here feel better about it. He ain't ready for this. But............................ what the he11.

If anyone here believes that the coaches aren't trying to win with Nania rather than Wells, you are clueless. ;D ;D ;D
I couldn't agree more. Bring him on. I love Dante as a person and a QB but I'm ready to see Hunter in a position to have to earn what he gets against D1 competition. Enough of the hype.
