YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU at UNI. 11/9
« on: November 07, 2013, 12:07:28 PM »
UNI is still a good and dangerous team, especially in their dome! The game should be a real nail biter, if Kollmorgen plays it will be very tough to win there. If, Kollmorgen doesn't play; that will cut some slack for our defense.

If we don't take care of the ball and have 3 fumbles like last week, "it will be kiss it goodbye". I'm hoping we don't make those crazy mistakes; but the game will be very physical. Look for YSU to eek out another win.

I know many of you do not want to hear this, but here goes:

I believe the real problem for YSU mediocre attendance is: many of the faithful fans of the 1990's are a lot older; also many have moved away from the area (like me). I remember the stadium in the 90's being filled and the place was rocking with great excitement!

Now many of the remaining fans are dedicated Ohio State and Penn State fans because of their preeminence in the bowl series format and usually their winning records. Many of these fans thinks YSU football is minor league. Many on this board like the playoff format (FCS) and expects YSU to be chosen every year, but that has been far and few times since the Tressel era.

I believe they can get back to averaging 13-15,000 fans in the current format, but they have to have several good playoff years were they go deep into the playoffs and have good weather.

Their best chance to get a larger fan base is the BSC format. Yes, it will cost a lot more money, but it allows YSU to play recognized schools and sets up all important game rivalries (which we do not have currently). Just look at the schools that have went to the BSC format since the Tressel years: Boise State, Marshall, Fla. Atlantic, Nevada, UCF, Fla. International, North Texas, Connecticut, UMass, South Fla., Western Ky., Ga. State, UTSA, Idaho, Troy, Appalachian St., Ga. Southern and the list goes on. Why?? Because they get to play the big named schools, get a lot more recognition via TV and media plus they make a lot more money!!!!

What ever happens, I will remain a YSU fan!

Spiderlegs: that was a good post! I see it pretty much the same. Hess was never set up properly and missed his target time after time. While the W. Illinois QB had no problem throwing over the middle time after time.

There were some nice plays by the offensive line giving Ruiz holes and he did the rest. The special teams again are vastly improved.

I will take the win and be happy!

Hats off to the brave fans who attended the YSU-W.Illinois game in the windy, rainy weather. The game was like the weather UGLY!!

Kurt Hess was pathetic, but Martin Ruiz was spectacular!! I noticed W. Illinois got away with several holding calls which if called would of made our defense look a little better. Our defense still can't stop the 3rd down passing plays. We make every quarterback in the league look like great QBs.

The good side - what would we do without Ruiz? He looked great! So did Liste with his punts and kickoffs. Nate Adams made a great catch to seal the game.(the ball did touch the ground and should have been incomplete, but I will take it).

Well: A WIN is a WIN don't matter how ugly, I'll take it!

Let's hope for good weather and a good turnout; the Ohio State game is at 3:30 and it will be a
conflict with some fans.

The team seems to be jelling, but the defense must continue to step up and prevent the passing  plays over the middle. I have not heard the status of Ruiz, if he is not playing this probably will slow are running game.

We can't let down and have too many mistakes. I still believe we will prevail.

After seeing what Jody Webb did in the Indiana State game, I like what I saw. He adds another dimension in the backfield with Martin Ruiz because Webb has quick acceleration. This allows the offence to add more play selections. I feel Ruiz will be great, but having 20+ carries every game can wear him down.

One thing for sure, I would like to see him in more plays because he is explosive!

Indiana State has Bell back and that will extend our defense. He will probably gain 100+ yards. It should be a high scoring affair because both defenses have not shown they can stop good offenses.

I still do not trust our defense; yes they stopped SIU the 2nd half of last week's game, but a big turnover at the end stopped SIU. The game will depend on critical turnovers and if we get pressure on their QB. If their QB is mobile & can scramble it may be a long day for us.

Fan:

Boise State made the jump to FBS about 9-10 years ago and have grown into the national big scene several times. They just added $42+ million to their football complex which is a state of the art facility (weight rooms and locker rooms.) They like NDSU are not in a large population base area, but they recruit from surrounding larger states. I think NDSU could jump into the FBS area and may be successful. At least try.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: MSU In-Game Thread!
« on: September 15, 2013, 04:02:05 PM »
This was an upsetting game to watch!! and it took a day to quiet my nerves. It boils down to EXECUTION, EXECUTION, EXECUTION!!MSU Did it and YSU did not.

* YSU had no pass rush on MSU's QB Cook; he had more than 8 sec. to throw a pass every time.
* Fumble by Ruiz was big; it allowed MSU to score quickly and put the game out of reach
* Miss tackles all over, but #23 couldn't seem to tackle anyone also he had a great opportunity for a pass
interception from Cook (the ball hit him nearly on the numbers). That play was depth into MSU territory
and could have been easy YSU touchdown.
* Several passes were dropped and then Hess started to miss his targets like the Dayton game. Stubbs did
make a sensational catch in the 1st quarter.
* The fumble by Wheary on the kickoff return hurt; but the game was determined by then.
* MSU did indeed control the line and Torrian Pace didn't have a prayer up the middle.
* YSU defense still has a long, long way to go. The MVCF teams will definitely take advantage of YSU's
   defensive passing holes.
* YSU must learn how to hold on to the ball!! These turnovers demoralize everyone.

What happened to Bellamy? I heard he was ready for the Michigan State game.

I remember "Chicken Little" saying: (the sky is falling") well it sure did in E. Lansing

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: A big week for FCS schools
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:23:29 PM »
I don't know what happened, but here are the rest of the scores:

E. Washington   49    Oregon St     46
N. Dakota St     24    Kansas St     21
Towson            33     UConn         18
N. Iowa            28     Iowa St        20
McNeese St      53    South Fla.      21
E. Illinois          40    San Diego St 19

The MVFC did well and many other FCS teams gave the big boys some very close games decided in the 4th quarter.

Wow! What a game between NDSU and Kansas St. I watched the game on Fox Sports. NDSU has a complete team, but I liked the way they never gave up. Brock Jensen was on a mission, he threw strikes over the middle on slant plays and made some gutsy runs on 3rd downs.

They are coached well by Snyder and company, we must improve considerably during the season to get a win over them. NDSU proved they can indeed win against FBC schools, their 4th win against FBC schools in 4 years.
