Why is high school football starting so soon? It's 2 fricking weeks before Labor Day weekend. They used to play their 1st game after Labor Day, then for many years it was the weekend before Labor Day (which I can live with), but this early start is ridiculous. What say you?

In Ohio, the cause is the absurd expansion of the playoffs. They now take 16 teams from each region. To win a state championship, you now must win six games. If they began on Labor Day weekend, the season would stretch to the week before Christmas.

This expansion smacks of "everybody gets a trophy" syndrome. "everybody" makes the playoffs.

I am a PA guy who always felt that the OH play-off system was much better then what they do in PA. The move to 16 teams is a step backward, most 1/8 games are not close now we will have some 1/16 blow-outs. Yes starting to look like a participation reward type of thing. And then for that to be the reason to start the season early is wrong.
Go back to 8 teams and start school after Labor Day.
It is all about the extra money no matter what they say, more games means more money!
