Title: Basketball Transfer Portal
Post by: ytownchief22 on March 13, 2021, 08:40:26 AM
Several, and I mean several basketball players entering the transfer portal on both the men's and women's side.

DQ
Hamperian
Ganley

Mary Dunn
McKenah Peters
Taylor Petit

Very strange to see so many players leaving.....

Chief,

Do you know how many of them entered the transfer portal because they were not being offered scholarships by YSU?

Trying to put some perspective on this and not thinking it's only a YSU issue I looked at the other teams in the Horizon league on verbalcommits and found the following as of 3/13/2021.

Green Bay 3 transferring
Milwaukee 2
NKU 1
Oakland 1
Ft. Wayne 3
Robert Morris 2
UIC 3

Not sure how many are walkons vs scholarship players.

This is the nature of college sports in 2021 and probably more for a player who wants playing time now than possibly waiting for their chance with work and patience.

Chief,

I would assume that is the case for Hamperian and Ganley. They weren't gonna see much playing time with the new kids coming in.

He never missed a shot in the video.  Actually he shot 47% from the field and 42% from 3.  Likes to lean back on his shot.

Was wondering what made coach go after him.   Third year in a row YSU got a D2 transfer.  Last year was Greyson Kelly and the year before we got a guy who was from an Northeastern school.  Never actually came here.

There is something wrong with this picture. Our D-1 guys are transferring out and D-2 guys are transferring in.why can’t we get some D-1 transfers?

I thought Owen Long (as reported by Chief) who transferred in was from a D-2 program. I actually Googled the school.

Looking at the roster as listed on the website, we have 12 players (5 seniors and 7 Freshmen).
What happened to all the sophomores and Juniors?

That was part of the problem this past year.  Had all of the seniors plus DQ when he was healthy, but really no experience off the bench other than Hamperian.  We had all those freshman and losing so many practices and non-conference games really hurt.  Now with juniors DQ and Hamperian gone, they were the only 2 non-seniors or freshman.

He was already a senior.  Didn't expect him to stay.  I had hoped he would have contributed more this year, but his playing time really decreased.  Even when DQ was out, he really didn't play much

I was actually surprised that he didn’t enter the transfer portal earlier. With his diminished playing time this year, obviously, he was not in the game plan.
If several starting seniors (Covington, Naz, Acuchie) decided to stay, he might not be offered a scholarship. It would not surprise me if we will lose couple more marginal players if scholarships are not available.
I hope we could pick up couple D1 senior transfers via the portal.

The transfer portal hurts the mid majors and lower.  it will be hard to hang onto kids and build a program.

Hurts occasionally, helps occasionally.  We are loosing DQ which is a huge hurt, but we picked up RB Jaleel McLaughlin LB Grant Dixon and a host of others that have really helped the FB team.  We also have WBB and MBB transfers coming, not proven yet, but may be helpful as well.

Good find Mud.   That's four lower division transfers in the last two years.  Morgan and Bentley were D1 transfers.

We'll just have to let it play out and see if these guys work out.   Where was Akuchie's announcement ?

From the YSU basketball tweet:

Senior Michael Akuchie has announced that he will return for his 5th year of eligibility.

Akuchie, who averaged 9.9 ppg and 8.3 rpg, scored in double figures 15 times last year, had 7 double-doubles.

He also ranked 5th in the HL in rpg.#GoGuins

For context, Mount union likely had their best basketball team in program history in 2020 before the pandemic ended the season and Gurley was a major factor.

Long looks like a good D2 scorer, and I hope that translates to a mid major D1 scorer, but I damn sure don't want anybody else in this video.  Frankly I'm the only guy who noticed he was left handed.  Not one defender seemed to note such an obvious fact!

Good news.
As I posted before, all 3 seniors were still listed on the roster after DQ’s departure. I was hoping this might be an indication that they could decide to stay.
Then, Akuchie announced that he would stay. Now Covington decided to come back. Let us hope that Naz would decide to join them. We need these 3 musketeers for next season to take another run for the league championship.

DQ probably figures that he will surely start, be a big star, and enhance his chances at the NBA. Honestly, somebody needs to sit down with this young man, tell him point blank that he is not NBA material, and put an end to his delusions.

I like DQ (he is a hell of a good player) and I wish nothing but the best for him.

Therefore, I really don’t want to throw him under the bus. With that being said, I thought Kendrick Perry was a better player than DQ. If KP still couldn’t make it into NBA, I doubt very much DQ could ......just my 2 cents
Title: Re: Basketball Transfer Portal
Post by: ucfpengbuck on April 27, 2021, 06:50:03 PM
DQ exceeded all my expectations during his playing career at YSU.  The lingering ankle problem set him back this past season and was a problem his sophomore year.   Hopefully he'll get that under control and make a name for himself in the A10.   He should have a nice career and make a great living playing overseas.
Title: Re: Basketball Transfer Portal
Post by: Dmorton on April 27, 2021, 06:54:31 PM
You said it!  Overseas, not NBA material as of yet!  I doubt that will change.  A lot of that has to do with his ankle injury.  For my two cents, both should have came back to YSU.
Title: Re: Basketball Transfer Portal

KP was a better athlete but I think DQ is the better overall player as he's a true point guard.

Figured Naz was coming back with Covington, Akuchie & Thomas returning.

Really surprised with DQ going to Fordham.  Outside of being in NYC, just wonder on the allure there.  As it was mentioned, they were 2-12 last year and the Atlantic 10 isn't a huge jump in exposure from the Horizon League.

The ankle injury and COVID obviously changed things, but I just felt like all last year those were an odd dynamic/disconnect with him.  Wish him the best and maybe with a healthy ankle, he can get back to where he was his sophomore year, but like the others said he'll probably be playing overseas.

NYC would be a negative in my book.  With their record it must be a case where getting playing time is more important than winning.

The Atlantic 10 is a far superior league than the Horizon League (not just a "step up").  That being said, Fordham stinks and I'm surprised he selected them.  Does Q still have two years of eligibility left?

Yes, DQ was a better point guard than KP. I believe KP was a much better shooting guard than DQ.

When at YSU, KP had the uncanny ability to drive toward the hoop and pull up hitting the mid range jumper. He could also shoot the 3 balls. That is probably why he is doing well in the European league where shooting the 3 ball is a must (since zone defense is allowed).

This season, DQ has not shown me his ability to effectively run point and to consistently hit the outside jumpers (possibly due to his injuries).

If he could not recover his shooting touch, I wonder if he would be successful in the European league, let alone the NBA.

So what is the real problem here for both women and men?

Coaches?

Facilities?

Lack of fan support?

Lack of winning?

Lack of things to do near campus?

Other?

Title: Re: Basketball Transfer Portal
Post by: Wick250 on May 10, 2021, 02:26:29 PM
Guinpen, I will take a shot at this.

First, separate the men and the women. The women lost their entire non-conference season to Covid and struggled in the league around the .500 mark. They did lose some players in the transfer portal, including an exceptionally good freshman.  But Barnes has brought in transfers that, collectively, might be better than what he lost.  That includes a 6'4" center from Duquesne and a 6'1" D2 All-American from Wheeling. After watching McLaughlin run, I don't dismiss D2 All-Americans anymore.  The women also have a winning tradition that goes back decades and better fan support than any Ohio MAC program.

Our living facilities used to consist of one ancient dorm.  Now modern apartments surround the campus. The campus environment seems to be just fine for the Olympic sports teams that win consistently.  So for the men, it all comes down to either history of losing, facilities, fan support, or coaching.

Decades of losing might be a big problem.  I don't know how much recruits consider history. Fan support is generally poor, but actually better than half of the teams in the Horizon League.  The gym has a high school feel with the retractable bleachers, but the locker rooms and conference room for the players are now top notch. Hopefully, in two years the seating will be upgraded.

That leads us to coaching. Calhoun is a big upgrade from Slocum in many ways, including public relations. But the performance this year was below where it should have been. But Calhoun and every coach gets their "covid" pass this year.  If he does not win next year, we have a problem.

I think the free agent sytem (transfer portal) is not just isolated to YSU but is to all of college basketball.  If you just completed your freshman season and sat the bench and you see a bunch of new recruits then maybe it's a good option.  I know a lot of us want to see these guys work and develop but w're not privy to the dialogue that the coach and the player are having.  It looks like everyone is going to lose some and gain some.   Not sure we're bringing in anyone as good as naz & DQ but collectively with all the newcomers and what is returning they might just surprise us.

Mud, I'm also curious about Kelly's status.

Naz a solid player, but he will struggle to get playing time at Clemson.  They were a tournament team a year ago with many key players returning.  This is a huge jump in class from the Horizon League to the ACC.  I may be wrong, we will see, but I see him getting limited minutes.
