YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Offical Preview and Michigan State Preview
« on: September 01, 2011, 08:15:58 AM »
Most interesting part of the game notes to me is:

YSU has 15 junior-college transfers, eight Division I transfers and three lower-divisiontransfers on the current roster.

The FBS transfers are QB Adam Charles (Akron), CB Devonta’ Davis (Miami, Fla.), WR Juilian Harrell (Miami, Ohio), DT Andrew Johnson (Bowling Green), OT Andrew Radakovich (Penn State), Anthony Stryffeler (Ball State) and LB Travis Williams (Miami, Fla.).

Davis, Johnson, Williams and Radakovich are
slated to start against the Spartans.

50% of the FBS xfers are starting  :) Tell's me that there's some good young talent and locals that busted their azzes  8) You'd expect a 100% rate here - injuries.

Any of the old road crew plan on making the trip to East Lansing?

Anyone have any tips on where to tailgate (preferrably where some other YSU faithful can be found!)?

Looking forward to catching up with many of you back in the world's best tailgate lot in a couple of weeks!!!

Go Mighty Guins!!!

Going to Indy ST. And southern IL right now.  Looking into going to NDSU with a NDSU grad if he's not deployed to Afgan :(

Looks much better size wise on paper.  I'd like to see the D just a bit bigger although that's what Appy St does smaller faster "D" and it gave the Big 10 a "L" :)

Not to disrespect our I-AA comrades, but that was the worst team in Michigan history ...absolutely pitiful. Now I also remember a Penguin team holding the lead against a solid (not great) Penn State club until 1:02 remaining in the first half at Happy Valley. I am hoping for even more in East Lansing this year. We have a former Penguin coach at the helm, and a former Penguin player (son of a former Penguin Head coach) at D coordinator.

Not to turn this into a Michigan-Appy thread, but you're way off there on it being the worst team in Michigan history.  That 2007 Michigan team started the season ranked #5 and finished the season 9-4 after defeating Florida and Heisman winner Tebow in the Cap One Bowl.  Also they were B10 runner-ups.  Now, the last 3 seasons under Rodriguez are up there as the worst in school history.

Thanks for looking that up for me John.  I was thinking the 07 Go (big blow) team eas decent :)

General BS / BREAKING NEWS: President Obama....
« on: August 24, 2011, 12:06:07 PM »
... Has just confirmed that the DC earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as "Bush's Fault". Obama also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake's suspicious ties to the Tea Party. Conservatives however have proven that it was caused by the founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

Go figure LOL!!!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Interesting quote from coach W

I am not trying to create controversy ...I just did not agree with Wolf on this topic and we need thing to talk about for a couple weeks, or we will go crazy.  fb

I agree with Nova and Red, but only to a point. Most players come in and are pretty beat-up by the end of their career ...there is no pro future for 99% of all players ...they deserve something. Again, the word "equal" was used, and everything else being equal ...rank has to have it's privileges or they will not stick around. Then you lose your back-ups (poor depth). Then word gets out & you lose your recruits (poor team). You do not honor underclassmen on senior day. Good point that coach W could be using the word "equal" for the players, but we need back-ups that are "chompin at the bit" to play. A young guy has reason to wait for his chance to play, a senior does not, and he certainly will not be very "hungry". Not to mention that your upper class-men do most of the coaching on a team, as they have experience that a coach cannot teach. I do not want to be fielding a team of "rookies" every year. We did this last year, and this; we need to take the field with veterans at some point.  Are we trying to build a winning team ...or a winning program?

If they're that beat up then they need to be on the bench.  I'm not sure what you mean by "they deserve something".  They are paid to perform via scholarships. If all is equal then the under class men should get the nod since he's going to get better.  The JR/SR seems to be peaked out.

Quote
“If you look at the big picture, we’re gonna do what’s best for the program,” Wolford said. “If things are even and you’ve got a guy that’s going to be around here three or four years and another guy that’s only going to be here for another year or two, he’s had his opportunity. “If you’re gonna let someone come in and take your job, then that’s on you. You’ve got to live with it.”

What is your opinion? I absolutely do not agree with this statement. If two people are even ...you go with the seniors (then work your way down). Anything else can be misinterpreted as favoritism to your recruits over the previous coach. If you have a player that has been "busting his backside" for 4 or 5 years ...he deserves something in return. One loyal deed deserves another. Again this is only if the two in question are 'even'. Because what will happen is that you will lose players & will have no depth. Tressel and Heacock had 8 starting guards/tackles, and two centers on offense. They even rotated starters many times. Sure skilled positions are different, but if you expect to attract players away from larger program offers ...you had better be prepared to hand over the "keys to the city". To put this ins NFL terms ...No one is going to take a signing bonus in lieu of a salary. Do you think Pat Devlin transferred to Delaware, or Bo Levi transferred to Eastern Washington for "a chance" to play? That football was in their hand before they even set foot in camp the first time.

Am I seeing this incorrectly?

I agree with him.  I believe this was one of Heacocks faults.  He had better talent sitting on the bench because he was loyal to his upper class men.  Just because your a SR. that don't mean it's automatic you play.  Football is a team sport.

Okay, here we are. The Hampton paper:

Travis Williams, a former Lake Taylor High star linebacker, has called an audible.

Last week Williams, who is 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, said he was going to Hampton after transferring from Miami (Fla.).

But on Monday he decided to sign with Youngstown State.

"I feel like it's a better situation," said Williams, a former two-time All-Tidewater player.

"Growing up in the 757, I've seen all I need to see. I just wanted to continue my journey away from home. In the (Missouri Valley Football Conference) they play bigger schools. I'll get a chance to play against better competition, so I can see where I really stand (rather) than against a lower division."

According to one power poll last season, the Missouri Valley ranked second among Football Championship Subdivision conferences behind only the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, where Hampton plays, ranked 10th out of 11 conferences.

Youngstown State has  played Penn State, Pittsburgh and Ohio State in the past four seasons and this season opens at Michigan State on Sept 2.

Williams was highly recruited out of high school and signed with Miami.

He missed last season with a knee injury, but earned a starting position during spring practice.

He said a disagreement with new Hurricanes head coach Al Golden made him realize it would be better to leave.

He wanted to come home to be with mother. Last July, his brother, Wayne, was killed.

"When my brother got murdered my family was stressing and I wanted to be close to home," he said.

"After talking to my mother, my mother encouraged me to go away from home."

Cool!!  At 6'3" 208 I bet he's fast as a cat!!  Sounds like a great pick up for the "D" :)

YSUGO

As soon as everyone GROWS UP, we will ALL get along.
You know when that will be....the second Tuesday of
next week..... NEVER, it will never happen.  People are
born to argue about stuff that doesn't even matter

Give some credit tho, at least they realize hearsay should
not have been posted to begin with.  YSU deals with enough
problems that are for real, hearsay stuff is not needed.
Just my opinion; but then I'm an "oldie", (not me, just my
years on earth).
GO PENGUINS

I agree.  Will I see you and Ray in Carbondale??  :-*
