YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU Baseball
« on: Today at 03:16:20 PM »
There are lots of things that go into this. However, the biggest thing to know is that a few people stood up for the baseball team when it look like YSU was going to drop baseball the same year as Cleveland state and one of the other schools that dropped it I forget. So there’s definitely a financial situation involved here. Baseball is equivalency sport, so Bertolini can really distribute the scholarships (if there are any) as he sees fit.

The one thing that should be noted here is that FCS football is also an equivalency sport. So you can imagine that football alone has as many scholarships as all of our other men’s equivalency sports combined. But this is a football school . and with the most recent focus on women’s sports, one can imagine there’s been nothing going into baseball financially.

I could be wrong… I thought U of Akron dropped baseball the same time as CSU.
I recall that a few Akron players transferred to YSU that year.

Playing Mercyhurst would be worse that playing Valpo!

I watched us losing to Butler, need I say more.

He'll play over seas and make some decent cash.  Very versatile .  Can handle the ball and his 3 point shooting will probably get better in Europe.   One of the best rebounders in YSU history.  Love his effort and ethuiasm,

I can’t see him cracking the NBA roster as suggested by others.
Antonine Davis is still in the D league. K. Perry is still playing in Europe. Those 2 guys were first team Horizon league players.

Burns’s strength is in rebounding. How many 6’6” guys that we know of is effective in rebounding in NBA? Charles Barkley probably was the best 6’6” guy ever in rebounding, but that was 30 years ago before all these 6’10” guys starting to show up.

Burns is an ideal player for Europe…. Good with ball handling , good 3 point shooter, good ft shooter, good rebounder with quickness, timing & positioning.

Ucf, thanks for the posting. Ty Harper seems to be very quick and athletic. He reminds me of Cohill.
As for Nelson, sorry, after the last couple of years, I am just not too thrill on 5’10 guards anymore.

It makes sense if he's getting paid. It makes sense since we continue to recruit and field D2/3 quarterbacks. However, I could be wrong but I don't see him lighting up the big house on the field.

I have read that was quoted somewhere about minimum nil $$ for Ohio State players were $38k. We really couldn’t blame the fcs player to move up the fbs for nil $$ alone, not to mention getting possible playing time for big time football.
The downside, obviously would be the lack of playing time (became a bench rider) minimizing the possibility of exposure to reach the next level.

Either way, I wish nothing but the best for the young man to receive an opportunity to get a scholarship in addition to nil $$ and to be part of the national championship program.

The delusions of the G5 programs apparently know no limits. Corporations and networks care ONLY about the P5. A G5 playoff would have the exact same interest as the FCS playoffs....namely none whatsoever.
Agree, the national  interests will be low especially with the extended playoff of the P5 teams. How much local interests, let alone national interests for the MAC teams? Even local people are not watching the Akron or Kent home games.
However, there might be tv $$$ to be made for G5 markets.

IMO. The P5 playoff in comparison to the G5 playoff will be comparable to the NCAA MBB & NIT. Some local interests for the participating teams, but little interests elsewhere.

I missed the Canisius transfer from all the garbage posts.  Was starting to get little worried & still a bit am from the lack of signings.  Is Elijah Guillory still committed?
Need couple power forwards from the transfer portal, similar to those combos we had for the last two seasons.

Philips said we don't have to worry about the QB position.   Is he smoking weed or what?..we don't have a QB on roster to win but a few games at best.  We cannot depend on running QBs and avoid passing. Disaster if we are.  Defense is young and unproven
.. could be a long year.

Lol, I guess it all depends on coach’s perspective. Things are often relative. In comparison to DB, LB, DL, he might  not be worry much about QB.

If you read the Vindy article it seems between the lines Phillips wants Shannon to be the guy.  Again is he? Accuracy quick decision making is what’s needed in aD1 QB.  A good coach builds around a players strength. My guess is the Springfield Kid has that more than the others.  Do we need another Crenshaw experience.  I feel this is where Phillips fails in not seeing what’s right in front of him.  This team right now lacks a true chunk play game breaker.  I see a sub 500 record this coming year especially in conference.  This year we will need his best coaching job ever.  When you had the influx of transfers D leave after he said maybe our scheme was too complicated? Not all were told to leave.  They know what’s up and next year is a rebuild.  Depth means a lot if you have horses to win it.  We don’t have those game changing horses right now.  Think about it we have had to go to there’s transfer portal for RBs and our number 1 receiver.  What happened about the off field incident with tbe transfer WR and he was with other players.  Where’s the media for that?

As I have posted in the past, imo, if Phillips started Davidson at ehe beginning of the season instead of Crenshaw, we would have made the playoff that year.
Shannon might be the chosen one (like Crenshaw), however, in the spring game, I did not see him having the ability to find the open receiver (like Crenshaw) and he put head down and tan (like Crenshaw). I hope Phillips will not make the same mistakes (like Not starting Davidson).

As it turned out Davidson was a pretty good QB who got some post season visibility in a demonstration game. He probably will not be NFL draft material, however he might get invited to some rookie camp. We shall see in a couple of weeks.
