YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Penguins Announce December Signees
« on: December 26, 2023, 07:45:59 AM »
YSU is about as far from a basketball school as you can get. Basketball does determine most of what a university will do though. Conference affiliation, interest, etc. YSU was only a "player" that year we knocked off Butler twice during one of the years they made the NCAA final. Slocum was the darling of ESPN.

However, with the portal and major changes in college football approaching, basketball will probably become a thing of the past at many schools.

I would think that Navy should draw a crowd.

I would be all over Long Beach CC. That conference gets some great players from the LA Catholic schools.  We had that stud from Mater Dei come out of there. He played for Heacock and was 'all everything'  and a pro tryout. Cannot remember his name.

You know, I am somewhat different than most on the board, as I really only like YSU sports. Sure I keep my eyes on the Orioles and occasionally the Tribe, but I would rather go to a YSU baseball game any day of the week. When I lived locally, if I was off, I would shoot over to campus and watch any number of other sports. I lived right around the corner from McCune and saw Penguin softball quite a bit, as I helped coach my little brother's ball team there.

That being said I do not care about the AFC Central/North, even if I check out the Browns game once in a while. Instead I check out the teams in the MVFC and Horizon.  That being said:

1. I may have been too harsh, but even toning it down, I still do not see us in the top-20.
2. Remember that men's basketball (and women's sports in general)  drive conference affiliation. That does not seem to be the case in the very near future does it?

21
I just looked up the Albany-Villanova game. Villanova had five turnovers; Albany had none.

As others have noted, Villanova is the only CAA team that has the size and strength up front to compete in the MVFC. With James Madison and Delaware now gone, the CAA has become Villanova and the (fill-in the blank) dwarfs.

The CAA joins the Southern Conference, once the home of multiple championship teams Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Appalachian State, as a second rate FCS conference.

As we remain an irrelevant program in the irrelevant FCS.

Could’nt agree more I never understood the fascination of being in the fourth fifth or or six best team in a conference that we don’t fit in with no natural rivalries and very hard to travel. If we were in the CAA, we would be with Villanova like Dakotas, and be a top team every year and make the playoffs a lot easier and with that would come a higher seed and more home games instead of being a middle of pack team as we are now. But Mike was said in his post the FCS will become more irrelevant.
I don’t see anything positive staying in the conference or wait. Maybe we should hang a banner Youngstown State plays in the toughest conference in FCS football and we made the playoffs three times in 20+ years ha ha ha ha we can put that next to the championship flags don’t get me wrong, I love Youngstown State but when you look at this from the big picture being in his Conference has been nothing but a failure look at this they brought in Murray state, not for football, but do the basketball program. Why aren’t we in? why aren’t we in this conference? I know the answer because we don’t have the money that the schools have for the most part that’s another story but again hey, we played a toughest conference and FCS and congratulations for that and let’s be honest we got a bottom feeder playoff team as a reward we would opened up on the road  against Villanova we have been one and done but again I’m still pro these guys and I understand we’re never gonna leave the conference as long as the AD supports it .  Another thing just because those teams suck. I got to the final four doesn’t matter. It just proves my point due to a conference got them to that point they didn’t have to beat their heads into the wall like we have done year after year hoping praying that we get in.  Go penguins.

So what options do you have?

1. Move to a supposedly easier conference. Well would that not be an embarrassment? Look at how people here attacked WIU? You know that they only moved because they needed a conference that can support all of their sports. They were a power in the MVFC for years. Despite the OVC/Big south conference heading for twice our size, they only one team is going to make the play-off. MVFC had what? 6 teams?

2. Join the MAC? Well then I am no longer anything but a dedicated TV watcher and radio listener, as I do not have the ability to attend weekday games..

3. I mean the 3 bowl games that they have had so far were basically unknown to anyone on TV. Yet they were all above the level of the MAC. Heck, the second place team in the MAC gets a better game than the winner.. They get a Big-10 team. Although this is a record year for the MAC and he number of bowl games.

4. Miami (MAC Champion) brags about coach Martin's 6 national championships in the past 20-years. This is in their program and bio.  Funny, not one of those came from his time with Miami. They were all from Grand Valley State (D-II) and his prior NAIA championship. I mean he has been with Miami for 10+ years, about time they started talking about his accomplishments at Mimi.

5. The head coach of the best team in FCS/I-AA is leaving to be a position coach at a big-10 school..

You know not every MAC game is during the week right?

Kent state only had 1 home game on a Wednesday and so did Akron,

You have to wonder how much of that is fan apathy? A couple years back, it seemed like Buffalo was on every week.

Well, the offenses  have is finally woke up, but the defense is still stink and can’t stop them

24
1. I like to say this was a big, defensive struggle, but quite honestly two of the most inept offenses I’ve ever seen.. I mean North Dakota stayed as bad as they were on defense held the grizzlies to three and out for an entire quarter and a half and we’re only able to put six points on the board two field goals.
2 that announcer is the worst announcer I have heard hidden so long I can’t stand to listen to them. I have to turn it off and take a break. He’s making this into like the greatest game ever played. It is the worst game of the season for both teams.

25
Albany has a great QB, they said he will be POY or Frosh of the year for sure. already won it for the CAA.  Albany stomped Villanova. I think it was 34-3. last night was just Just a bad environment for them

YSU Penguin Athletics / Reid, Dynes Earn Horizon League Weekly Honors
« on: December 14, 2023, 07:34:14 AM »
Indianapolis, Ind. – Youngstown State senior Ziggy Reid has been named the Horizon League Under Armour Player of the Week and freshman Gabe Dynes is the Under Armour Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

It marks the first Horizon League weekly honor for both Reid and Dynes.

Reid led the Penguins to a 2-0 record last week with a pair of road victories over Mid-American Conference opponents. He averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and shot 45.8 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from 3-point range and 100 percent from the free-throw line.

Reid led the Penguins with a season-high 25 points with five 3-pointers  in the Penguins 72-68 win at Western Michigan. Against the Broncos he connected on 9-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-11 from 3-point range.

He scored 10 points, all in the second half, in the Penguins 78-72 win over Ohio.

Dynes was an important factor in the Penguin's 2-0 record last week in their road victories over Mid-American Conference opponents.

He averaged 6.0 points per game and shot 75 percent from the field. He also had four rebounds and posted a block in each game.

Dynes also ranks second in the Horizon League in total blocks with 17 and 1.7 blocks per game.

Youngstown State hosts Bethany, Thursday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center.

Haha.  Lots to think about in this thread. Someone just said this board is hating.  We can’t do that!!!  Palladian and nation have been calling this the cheerleader board for far too long.

Tressel, attendance, the 90’s OH MY!!! To be clear on some of the posts, Heacock got us in the playoffs once in ‘06.   The Wolf couldn’t win in November let alone win enough to make the playoffs.

Funny how no one mentions big BP much. You talk sooo much about kids coaching kids but fail to remember what HIS staff consisted of.  Maybe it’s NOT about inexperienced staff or the lack of money but rather, we just haven’t found another Tressel. Hate to break it to ya…we probably wont. JT, attendance AND the 90’s were an anomaly.  Not likely to happen again.  Look at the crumble happening in NDSU.  And look at the attendance at Nova. If memory serves me, I heard 5k fans?  And what did we have the week before, 3,500?  Man…that’s a helluva margin.  What’s that tell you?  ITS. NOT. JUST. YSU. And who said NDSU attendance is even falling? And they’re only a COUPLE years removed from their dynasty.

Hate to break THIS to you also.  IF we happen to be ranked top 10 this year, I’d say that’s not too shabby, actually.

Look, I get it…I want to be a power house. I wish the 90’s never happened as even I want that again.

I’d say, be satisfied with the very small incremental progress we have made over the last few years and go to church.  Cuz ain’t too many more flags gonna be hung without some prayer and another anomaly.

Go GUINS!!!

I would hope we are called a cheerleader board. After all this is a pro-YSU board  :)

Guinpen, your comment that maybe we were better than UNI is true in my opinion. Not better, but equal. I saw us beating them this year because we had a better QB then they expected, and that loss dictated the rest of the season. JCrum you cannot agree on ignoring the offense, work on a bad defense and ignore the fact that Davidson had very little protection against Villanova. The Nova defense got equal penetration across the line. It was not just ends, it was everyone. We did not have the ability to protect the QB and make holes. This is not defense. Look how overweight 2 or 3 of our offensive front linemen are. This is basic stuff. Exercise and nutrition. I mean fans in the stands were talking about it almost every home game. We still have a very knowledgeable fan base.

29
Let's put it this way. How many teams did we play this year (regular season) where you were sure we were going to win? The answer is "1". I was even afraid that we were going to lose to a then win-less Indiana State. I mean I am sorry but a top-20 team this does not make.

30
Just because I tell the truth, does not make me a crackhead. I imply feel we are not in the top-24 teams. In the MVFC alone we have SDSU, USD, NDSU, UND, UNI. Arguably I feel that SIU and ILS are also better than YSU. That is anywhere from 5-7 teams that would be ranked higher than YSU. Albany, Richmond, Villanova, Delaware and Elon (about the same really for Elon). In the Big Sky, there is no less than 4 teams superior to YSU.  Now that is 14-16 right there. It looks like  YSU would be in the top24, but just barely. Other teams I feel are better than YSU this year are ...Furman, Mercer, Chattanooga (WCU about the same as YSU), Gardner-Web, Samford and I am sure there are a few more that are our equals or better in 2023.
