Youngstown State University head baseball coach Rich Pasquale has added Ed Marko to his staff as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2012 season.

Marko, who was most recently serving as an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies, comes to YSU highly experienced coaching in both the collegiate and summer ball ranks.

"I'm extremely excited to add Eddie to our Penguins baseball family," Pasquale said. "In addition to his knowledge of how to run a quality pitching staff, he has tremendous connections throughout the baseball world that will help us in recruiting. Our program will definitely benefit with Eddie on board."

Marko has coached a national championship team at the junior college level while producing two NJCAA All-America pitchers, seven all-conference pitchers and four all-region pitchers. Thirty-eight pitchers he has worked with have been drafted, including three in the first round.

He got his coaching start at the University at Buffalo in 2006, and he went on to coach the next two seasons at Grayson County College in Texas. With Marko heading up the pitching staff, the Vikings won the 2008 NJCAA National Championship. In 2007, with current Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim closer Jordan Walden on the team, the Vikings had a staff ERA of 2.99.

Marko served as the pitching coach the next two seasons in the Cape Cod League, which is one of the top summer leagues in the country. He coached the Bourne Braves in 2008 and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2009. Current Chicago White Sox reliever Chris Sale was on that Y-D staff. Marko was the pitching coach for the Laconia Muskrats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League in 2010.

Sale was drafted 13th overall by the White Sox in 2010. Other first-round picks to have worked with Marko include Kyle Gibson (2009 by the Minnesota Twins) and Victor Black (2009 by the Pittsburgh Pirates). Gibson was rated the No. 32 prospect by MLB.com prior to the 2011 season.

As a player, Marko pitched collegiately for Cleveland State and the University of Texas-Pan American. He then pitched professionally for four years in independent leagues, including three in the Frontier League.

He earned his degree in general studies from UTPA.

Marko takes over for Dan Lipari, who resigned to pursue opportunities outside of coaching.

Marko inherits a pitching program at YSU that currently has four former hurlers pitching in the minor leagues. Justin Thomas is pitching at the AAA level in the Pirates Organization, Eric Marzec is pitching at the A level in the Milwaukee Brewers system, Aaron Swenson is pitching at the A level in the Baltimore Orioles organization and Phil Klein is pitching in the Rookie Arizona League in the Texas Rangers organization.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In just a month it's reporting day for the Youngstown State football team with practice starting a day later.

Just like other programs around the country, there will be some changes for the new season and the Penguins are no different.

David Rach of South Range High School, who left the program prior to spring practice, is back taking part in the summer voluntary workouts.

Rach started every game last year and was the team's third leading tackler.

Leaving the program is receiver Diont'e Snow and cornerback Randy Louis.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: Rach ready to return to YSU squad

By Joe Scalzo

Youngstown

A few weeks ago, David Rach had just finished his final exams after a tough — and football-free — spring semester. He headed back to the weight room and was greeted by a group of former teammate who couldn’t wait to bust his chops over missing three weeks’ worth of spring practice.

“Yeah, they were messing around, kidding me about my fresh legs and my fresh body,” said Rach, a YSU linebacker who quit the team before spring practice. “The guys pretty much acted like I never left.”

By that point, Rach was toying with the idea of coming back. But he needed to know the team wanted him back.

They did.

“That’s part of what made it so special,” said Rach, a South Range High graduate who will be a senior this fall. “I was away the whole spring and the guys still treated me like a teammate.”

Rach’s addition was offset by two departures on Tuesday, as senior cornerback Randy Louis and senior wide receiver Dionte Snow left the team, according to a report on WFMJ-TV.

Louis started eight games last fall and was expected to contend for a starting spot this fall, although the Penguins picked up a key transfer in recent days in former Miami Hurricane CB Devont’a Davis. Davis has enrolled and attended his first class at YSU on Tuesday.

“I came here to compete for a starting job and I think I’ve got a pretty good chance,” Davis said by phone on Tuesday afternoon. “YSU gave me the opportunity I want and I think I can help out the program.”

Davis, who redshirted last season and will have four years of eligibility, is from Gainesville, Fla. but he’s not worried about being so far from home.

“I’m a man, I can deal with pressure,” said Davis, who plans to major in sociology. “I’ve been in pressure situations all my life, so it’s not a problem.”

Snow mainly played special teams his first two seasons and did not see action last fall.

Rach started all 11 games last fall and was third on the team with 64 tackles, second on the team in tackles for loss (five), first in fumbles recovered (two) and tied for first in sacks (two). It was a breakout junior season for Rach, who played sparingly his first two seasons.

“It basically came down to missing the guys,” Rach said. “I left in the spring to primarily focus on academics and I was a little beat up.

“To be honest, I stayed away this spring because I didn’t want to be a distraction to the guys who were working hard and I knew it would be tough to be around it.”

The YSU coaches had planned to move the 6-foot-4 Rach to defensive end, and he’s assuming that’s still the plan.

“I kind of hope so, because I’m eating like a defensive end,” joked Rach, who’s gained about 15 pounds from last year’s playing weight of 230 and plans to add five more. “It might be too late. I might have solidified myself as a lineman, by the way I’m running — or not running.

“Right now, I’m approaching it as if I’m an incoming freshman and I’m at the bottom of the depth chart, trying to work my way up. I’ll try to help any way I can.”

Rach, an education major on track to graduate next spring, plans to teach and coach when his career is over and hopes to staying in the Valley.

“In my opinion, Ohio high school football is the best in the country,” he said. “People argue for Texas and California and I’m obviously partial to this area, but I don’t think it gets any better than here. If I have the opportunity, this is where I’d like to coach.”

Mark Klysner Takes Over Women's Tennis Program

Youngstown State Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Wednesday that Mark Klysner, who served a the men's tennis head coach last year, will take over the women's program as well effective immediately.

Klysner replaces Michele Grim who resigned after spending the past 14 years with the program.

Strollo said the work Klysner has done in his role as men's tennis coach made him the perfect choice to take over both positions.

"In one year our men's program has made great strides under Mark," Strollo said. "We are excited that he will coach both programs and feel our tennis future at Youngstown State is very strong under his leadership."

In his first campaign with the Penguins, Klysner led the men's team to six dual victories, a berth in the Horizon League Tournament, won two league matches and had a player named first-team all-conference.

The six wins were a five-win improvement from the previous year. The two Horizon League victories marked the first time since joining the conference that the Guins had multiple wins in the same year. At the League Tournament, the Penguins battled in tough losses to Wright State and Butler. Junior Tariq Ismail was a first-team all-league selection, the first on the men's side since 2005.

Klysner has a solid track record of experience when it comes to coaching women's programs.

Klysner was an assistant for the women's team at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2009-10. The Knights' won the regular-season conference title and had won 10 straight matches before losing in the Northeast Conference Tournament final.

He spent the 2008-09 campaign as a men's and women's assistant at Austin Peay.

Klysner was the head men's and women's tennis coach at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash., for two seasons (2006-08). He also was the assistant men's and women's tennis coach at the University of South Carolina at Aiken in 1999-2000.

"I'm excited to coach both programs here at Youngstown State," Klysner said. "I want to thank Ron Strollo and the YSU athletic department for this great opportunity. I'm very excited to be coaching both programs and look forward to the upcoming season. The support our administration has shown has been tremendous and everything has been handled in a first-class way. I look forward to the challenge of coaching both programs and can't wait to get busy recruiting."

Helen Stambaugh, who served the Mahoning Valley as a true symbol of philanthropy throughout the past half century and was a key contributor to Youngstown State University and the Athletics Department for many decades, passed away on Monday. She was 92.

For YSU, Mrs. Stambaugh, along with her husband, Arnold, will forever be linked to the Athletic Department by the naming of Arnold D. Stambaugh Stadium. The Stadium opened in 1982 and gave the football program its first on-campus home facility. Now, 30 years later, it remains one of the top complexes at the FCS level.

Calling hours are from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the Anstrom-Velker Funeral Home (75 East Midlothian Blvd.) and on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church on Mahoning Ave. Services are Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.

Mrs. Stambaugh was inducted into the Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 and was honored as the Penguin of the Year in 2005.

She maintained a scholarship endowment in the athletic department and contributed $150,000 for the YSU Marching Pride to get new uniforms in 2007. Stambaugh also provided the lead gift for the university's Wellness and Recreation Center, which opened in 2005. On campus, the Stambaugh Room in Kilcawley Center is named in the honor of her husband and her. She was named a Friend of the University in 2008. Additionally, she helped contribute to the construction of the stadium's East side and took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony in 1997.

Other notable awards for Mrs. Stambaugh included: Valley Legacy Award as an Outstanding Senior from Shepherd of the Valley; 2004 Outstanding Philanthropists Mahoning/Shenango Chapter; Greater Communicator Award from Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center; 2007 Distinguished Scouter Award by the Great Western Reserve Boy Scout Council; 2008 Helen Stambaugh Award from Shepherd of the Valley and 2007 Woman of the Year-Distinguished Citizen Award by the Federation of Women Club. YSU Penguin Athletics / Pre-Season Polls
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:30:45 AM »
Well:

Looks like we have our work cut out for us in 2011. There are 4 magazines this year, as the Sporting News threw their hat in the ring. Street an Smith is not out yet, but we are last in 2 of the 4 mag conference polls so far. Second-to-last in the other. Looks like Athlon does not even care anymore. They did confirm that Boatwright's hamstring injury is at least season-ending ...probably career.

They do not even wait to see who shows up for camp any more.

Guins hitting today ...up by a score of 8-4 after 4-innings. Injury break right now, as Crist made a nice tag at the plate & looks to be out of the game after the collision. 9 hits for YSU today. Great production to score 8 off of that.
