Title: YSU to build Soccer Stadium this summer
Post by: ysufan0505 on April 26, 2012, 03:32:56 PM
Saw an article in the Jambar that said construction will be started by early summer on a new Soccer Stadium across the street from Stambaugh Stadium. The project is budgeted for 1.88 million. Heard they are also going to build a softball stadium and a new outdoor track in the same area. Here are the two articles i found:

This will allow all 12 people who regularly go to soccer games, and the 14 who watch girls softball......to enjoy some of the best facilities in their Conference. :o ;)

And is it any wonder......why the country is going broke?

I wish they can add a men's soccer program.... we could probably play Akron, a perennial soccer team, if we did....

You don't think that we are building a facility for women's sports do you? I have heard two reasons for the facility:

1. It is part of a women's sports complex ...will have 3 facilities ...soccer, softball, and a women's athletics center (building). Because of it's association with women's athletic, there is $$$ available.

2. It is the last facility we need to join the MAC and adding men's soccer is the key focus.

We do need one more men's program ...many say hockey, but we need a nationally-sanctioned sport. So it has to be swimming or soccer. Also, the plan that I have (which is old) does not have a track.  However, it is pre-WATTS.

I favor the soccer field, softball, with massive expansion of the track facilities. The women's athletics building is not really needed for any conference we are looking at. If we were trying to appeal to a larger conference, it would help us. Besides, we do not have the funds to staff it. It would become an office for part-time coaches, and a female weight-room ...and we should have the room for that in Stambaugh and Beeghly.

You heard this is for the MAC, 1aa? I thought the MAC was a non-starter these days. Have you heard we are talking with them?

What I dont get about this athletic administration and I suppose YSU in general is why they don't post dedicated information about upcoming construction for alumni.  Who knows maybe someone would take an interest?  Every other university has photos and attempt to keep in-touch with it's alumni...  YSUsports.com still has 2 photos of the WATTS?  I know they have a few photos on facebook and twitter but it doesnt showcase the one thing they have and thats updated facilities.....

goodnews,

Hiring a string of bad coaches.  Starting football games at unpopular times.  Failing to inform alumni about upcoming facilities upgrades.  It is all connected.  Just condition yourself to expect nothing from this administration; then you will never be disappointed.

I am disappointed by Title IX. That Liberal, Democratic law......which has allowed a lot of young female athletes to be average.

I am sure, that wasn't the intent of the liberal/womens' rights....group.

They wanted equal opportunity for great female athletes.

TRUST ME......They Aren't getting THAT.....!!!!!

PM me if you'd like the details and facts......of this reality.....your TAX dollars at work...

You should be a financial contributor, or at least a member of the Penguin Club, or a paying alumni organization member to have a presentation put on as to what is being planned both facility wise and scheduling wise.  Recently the Sports Administration made a presentation to the Florida Alumnus as to plans and future scheduling in football and basketball games in the state of Florida.

Another organization that has had the same presentations has been the Curbstone Coaches.

Let's put it this way, to be informed you should be part of the YSU information system/organizations not just a blogger.

Elpenguin funny you should assume that I don't contribute...  I contributed to the men's golf equipment that was added to the WATTS center if that counts..  I also live in Arizona and recently attended an Alumni event in February and the university president did not mention.... I guess you now know why I come here for facility upgrades...

In Strollo's interview he mentioned that they will definitely try for a football game in Florida, as many of the players want to have their families see them play. I heard that we are doing a two-game (IA/FBS) season with Wisconsin and FAU next year. That will be tough on us. We will need to win the conference, or one of those two FBS games. Nice income though. I do not see the room on the schedule either.

So what would happen to the track facilities currently in that location...I drive by and see those kids out there everyday, it would be a shame to take facilities away from an established positive for the Athletic Department.

It's a shame the only FCS teams in Florida or way up north in Daytona and Tallahassee. We would surely be underdogs against FAU, but that's a winnable game. Nice recruiting trip either way, especially if we can pull off the win. Now would be a good time to schedule Miami :)

They could easliy move to the Watts and train. Especially if the Soccer team didn't have to use the Watts anymore since they would have their own facility

I don't think administration would be too happy with Hammers being thrown indoors, that could be a little destrcutive.  so i doubt it would be an "easy" thing.  something should be done.

DiscMan,

During the spring game, I got a good look at the land between Fifth and Ford from the concourse of the stadium.  With the houses removed, you can tell just how large a space we have over there.  Nobody has seen the diagrams yet, but there will be plenty of room for a soccer field, a softball stadium, and a throwing area.

There definitely is enough room, and i hope for a team that didn't have much of a home for quite sometime but did so much, theyll use the entire space.  And Elpenguin...you were informed basically correctly, but a 16 ball that travels at high-speed over 200 feet is probably not safe, and quite destructive in an enclosed area where the turf costs much more than grass.

Is this an effort to make the school more appealing to other conferences (i.e. MAC)?

Interesting comments from Strollo when he says the soccer field will be used mainly for intermural sports? That's kind of weird to me. I'm guessing it won't be that big then. Just seems weird to me. Why build a soccer field if it's only mainly gonna be used for intermural sports, seems like a waste of money.

There is a huge difference between a stadium and a field. There is no stadium mentioned in the articles I read.

It doesn't sound like they plan on an outdoor track.  That would take alot of land and it would seem to me you'd have to commit to the Outdoor track first to make sure you have the room for the smaller facilities.  The total square footage for just the track and the infield of said track would be right around 120,000 sq feet.  which is just 5000 square feet less than the watts.  Then if they want to do it right with stands and locker rooms etc.  you probably should tack on another 20-50k sq feet for that.  ALOT of land, your not gonna fit that in after the fact.
This will be completely off topic but I've heard rumblings from some associated with athletics and and from the articles I've read, and again i may be completely off base, but i get the feeling the Administration and others high up feel as if these facilities are some sort of gift to the teams and a triumph of athletics administration.  It seems to me that these things and much more are necessary to take things to the level I'm sure everyone wants them to be.  To be grateful is one thing, but to continually act as if no one could imagine YSU attaining such things is laughable to a program that strives to be division I, and may be the reason its struggling.

I was pleased to see that the drawings included that outdoor track around the soccer field.  Elpenguin had suggested months ago that that would be the case.  The plan looks very impressive.  Strollo did mention in that article that construction might come in stages as funding becomes available.  For example, lighting and permanent seating might not be part of the original installation.  My guess is that a portion of the "blood game" money each year will be assigned to this venture.  This is going to look really good, eventually.

Talking to Ron Strollo, he stated that work will continue even in the winter.  Of course those days of heavy snow will have an effect.  Priority is the build a 2 level playing field.  One level will contain the softball field the other level will have the soccer field.  First up should be the softball field, but that priority could change depending on time lost and unknown obstacles in digging and moving soil. In that case the soccer field might go up first.

Agreed...

Ya THINK.....your tax dollars.

If the facility could generate revenue, thats a good thing. But if it's designed and built to satisfy Title IX requirements.....and we taxpayers pay for a money losing venue.....does that make business sense???

Any wonder the USA is 16 Trillion dollars in debt???

Are we gonna increase female soccer attendance by 2,000 per game to pay for this.....(to cover the "TAXPAYER"...who is funding this).

If so I'm all for it....

But the Mahoning Valley is aging..in case you haven't noticed. I have a hard time getting my Dear Ol' Mom....out to Handels (ice cream)......let alone for her to watch a girls soccer game.
