Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State had 13 student-athletes selected across eight sports to the 2011 Spring Academic All-Horizon League teams. That was the second-most honorees among league schools.
YSU had two four-time selections among the group. Track and Field standouts Adam Kagarise and Alisha Anthony were both named to their respective teams for the fourth time in their YSU careers.
Men's golfer Spenser Sulzener was a three-time All-Academic selection while Phil Klein, Amanda Carpin, Lyndsie Hall and Samantha Formeck were all two-time honorees.
YSU's spring academic selections were Klein (Baseball), Vicky Rumph (Softball), Jordan Ingalls (Softball), Sulzener (Men's Golf), Formeck (Women's Golf), Jeff Hanselman (Men's Track and Field), Kagarise (Men's Track and Field), John Seaver (Men's Track and Field), Anthony (Women's Track and Field), Carpin (Women's Track and Field), Hall (Women's Track and Field), Samantha Hamilton (Women's Track and Field) and Melanie Prelec (Women's Track and Field).
It marked the first time that two softball players were named academic all-conference in the same year. It was also the first time since 2008 that a softball player had made the squad.
Butler led the 89 all-league honorees with 17 selections, followed by YSU, which had 13 picks. Ten Loyola student-athletes earned places on the teams, while UIC and Valparaiso each had nine student-athletes.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
