Youngstown -- Kelly Reese of Canfield and Amanda Zhelesnik of Medina will continue their academic and diving careers at Youngstown State at the start of the fall semester, head YSU diving coach Nick Gavolas announced. "Kelly and Amanda will make an immediate impact and I'm already excited to get the season going," Gavolas said. "While they lack experience in meets, they make up it for in tenacity and desire." Reese was a two-sport star at Canfield and dove under Gavolas as a member of Timberbrook Diving. She was a three-time first-team all-state honoree, finishing eighth at the OHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships as a senior, 10th as a sophomore and 12th as a freshman. As a senior, she was an Academic All-American, a USA High School All-American nominee, an AAU national qualifier, the NEAC Diver of the Year, the Perry Sectional Champion and the Northeast Ohio District Runner-Up. Also a volleyball standout, she was named team captain and earned First-Team All-District and Second-Team All-MAC honors as a senior. She is also is one of 39 incoming freshmen to earn the Leslie H. Cochran University Scholarship for academic excellence, which covers tuition, room and board. Zhelesnik is a three-year letterwinner in both swimming and gymnastics for the Battling Bees and was named the team’s Most Valuable Diver. In her career she won the Pioneer Conference title and was the champion of the sectional meet. She also reached the district finals twice. |
