Williamson Places Fourth in 100 Fly; Sets Two School Marks

Brown Deer, Wis. – Sophomore Ashley Williamson lowered her fastest time in school history in the 100 yard butterfly to place a strong fourth at the Horizon League Championships on Friday night at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.

Williamson also set a school record in the 100 yard backstroke while junior Jen Johnstone set a new school mark in the 100 yard breaststroke. To end the night, YSU’s 800-yard freestyle relay team also established a new school record.

Williamson swam the 100 fly in a time 56.68 seconds eclipsing her school best time of 57.42 seconds set at last year’s league meet. Green Bay’s Ashley Warzon won the event with a league and championship meet record time of 54.98 seconds.

Senior Natasha Bray earned an 11th-place finish in the 400 IM. Bray swam a career-best time of 4:39.60 to have a top-15 finish. Also for the Penguins, Hillary Barrett was 17th with a career-best time of 4:49.30 while Katie Wolf finished 20th.

In the 200 freestyle, Megan Rupe led the way placing 10th with a school-record time of 1:54.54. Other competitors in the event for the Penguins were Jessica Front, Audria Grubbs, Kirstin Walker and Alana Kane.
Williamson set her other school record finishing 10th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.18 seconds.

Freshman Nishani Cicilson placed 13th with a personal-best time of 59.91 seconds.

Johnstone led the way in the 100 yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 1:08.23 to finish in 15th place.
Sophomore Amanda Carpin finished ninth in the one-meter dive with a score of 206.65.

In the 800 freestyle relay, the Penguins had their best relay finish of the championships so far placing sixth with a record time of 7:45.57.

After three days of competition, YSU is currently in sixth place with 197 points. The Guins trail Cleveland State, which has 214 points, for fifth. Green Bay increased its overall lead with a score of 622.

Saturday is the final day of competition at the 2009 Horizon League Championships. The events set for Saturday are the 1,650 freestyle, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Free and 400 Free Relay.
 
 
Arnold, Medley Relay Team Set New School Marks at HL Championships

Brown Deer, Wis. -- Senior Olivia Arnold broke her school record in the 1,000 yard freestyle to finish fifth in the event during the first night of the Horizon League Championships at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.

Arnold swam the 1,000 in a record-breaking time of 10:21.05 to place fifth in an extremely fast field. Arnold lowered her school-record time by two seconds. She placed eighth at the 2008 HL Championships with a time that was 12 seconds slower.

Milwaukee’s Danielle Wenger won the event with a meet and league record time of 10:06.65. The top three placers all finished under the previous conference meet record time, which was set in 2005.

Also in the event, Natasha Bray placed 14th with a time of 10:38.36. Freshman Katie Wolf set a personal best with a swim of 11:10.38 while Hilary Barrett had a time of 11:13.97.

The Penguins closed the evening with a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The group of Nishani Cicilson, Jen Johnstone, Ashley Williamson and Megan Rupe finished with a school-record time of 1:48.53 eclipsing the mark the Guins set last year.

YSU opened the competition with a near school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The tandem of Cicilson, Rupe, Kirstin Walker and Alana Kane has a time of 1:37.43 to place seventh.

In the three-meter dive, sophomore Amanda Carpin placed 11th with a score of 198.75.
In the team race, YSU is in fifth place with 71 points, 10 points ahead of Cleveland State. Milwaukee leads with a 180.

The championship continues on Thursday with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay.
 
 
Arnold Wins 1,000 in Triangular With Green Bay and Illinois State

Green Bay, Wis. -- Senior Olivia Arnold won the 1,000 yard freestyle for the eighth time in dual action this season when she placed first in a triangular against Green Bay and Illinois State on Saturday afternoon.

Arnold has won the event in four straight duals, including eight of nine for the year, and her only second-place finish of the year came by three seconds in a dual with Ohio.

On Saturday, Arnold won the event with a time of 10:25.23 finishing seven-plus seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Arnold has already positioned herself as one of the top swimmers in the Horizon League in the discipline. She owns wins against HL foes Green Bay, UIC, Wright State, Butler and Cleveland State (twice) this year.

On Friday, Arnold took home an individual title against UIC narrowly lowering her school record in the event by .14 seconds.

Freshman Nishani Cicilson continued to impress in the 50-yard freestyle. Cicilson finished second in the event with a time of 24.84 seconds.
Sophomore Ashley Williamson had a strong showing in the 100-yard butterfly. Williamson was second with a time of 59.62 seconds.

YSU ended the meet on a solid note placing second in the 4x400 meter relay. The foursome of Kirstin Walker, Alana Kane, Cicilson and Megan Rupe posted a time of 3:39.27.

In Arnold's other two events she was third in the 500 freestyle (5:10.43) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:18.18).

In the team scoring, the Phoenix beat the Penguins 186-97 while the Redbirds scored a 208-91 decision over YSU.

The Penguins return to action next Friday when they visit Bowling Green for a triangular against the Falcons and Buffalo. It is YSU's last competition prior to the Horizon League Championship at the end of February.
