Senn Finishes 12th in 50 Free; Penguins in Sixth After Second Day |

Cleveland, Ohio -- Sophomore Brittany Senn swam a season-best time of 24.85 seconds to place 12th in the 50-yard freestyle to highlight YSU's performances at day two of the Horizon League Championships on Thursday. Senn also swam the backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay that swam the fourth-best time in school history (4:10.18) and placed sixth. Her split time of 1:04.51 also ranks her eighth all-time in the 100 back. The Penguins currently sit in sixth place 12 points ahead of Butler with 91 points. Cleveland State is in fifth with 129. Also on Thursday, Julia Darling placed 15th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.42 while Olivia Arnold placed 16th in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:18.47. Leigh Bareman swam a personal-best time of 25.25 in the 50 free to place 18th and move into fifth-place all-time in YSU history. Kelly Reese added an 11th-place finish in 1-meter diving with a score of 207.95. On Wednesday, Arnold was the highest individual finisher with a 12th-place time of 10:51.76 in the 1,000 free. Senn teamed up with Darling, Jessica Front and Bareman to place sixth in the 200 free relay, and the 200 medley relay of Bareman, Darling, Becky Bertuzzi and Senn placed sixth. The 200 medley relay time of 1:53.10 ranks third all-time while the time of 1:41.20 in the 200 free ranks sixth. Competition continues Friday morning with the prelims of the 400 IM at 10:30. |

Indianapolis -- Youngstown State freshmen Kelly Reese and Olivia Arnold swept the Horizon League's weekly swimming and diving awards for the second time this season, the league office announced Wednesday. The tandem put together strong individual performances in a meet against California (Pa.) and a double-dual against Cleveland State and UIC. Reese and Arnold also swept the awards in November. Reese picked up three wins over the weekend and set personal-best marks on both boards. After winning the 3-meter with a personal-best score of 247.65 against California (Pa.) on Friday, she won both boards against Cleveland State and UIC Saturday afternoon. Reese posted a personal-best score of 254.80 in the 1-meter to just miss qualifying for the NCAA Zone C Championship, and she reset her personal-best mark in the 3-meter with a 254.40. Her score in the 3-meter also moved her into third place on YSU's all-time top performer's list. Arnold went undefeated in distance freestyle events and anchored a winning relay last week. Against California (Pa.), she picked up YSU's first win of the meet in the 1,000 free (10:47.98) and added a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:17.74). She also anchored the 800-yard free relay against the Vulcans. A day later, Arnold was the top overall finisher in the 1,000 free (10:45.58) and the 500 free (5:18.42) against Cleveland State and UIC. She added a fourth-place overall finish against the Flames and Vikings in the 200 IM (2:17.94). Reese will compete at the YSU Diving Invitational on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Beeghly Natatorium. |

Cleveland, Ohio -- Freshman Kelly Reese won both diving events while Olivia Arnold swept the distance freestyle events in a double-dual against Cleveland State and UIC Saturday afternoon. Reese had personal-best scores in both events with a 254.80 in the 1-meter and 254.40 in the 3-meter. Arnold was the top overall finisher in the 1,000 free (10:45.58) and the 500 free (5:18.42). The Penguins fell 123-109 to UIC and 130-97 to Cleveland State. Jessica Front won the 200 free against UIC with a personal-best time of 1:59.91, and she teamed up with Erin Sayre, Julia Darling and Becky Bertuzzi to lead YSU's 400 medley relay to a win against the Flames (4:20.44). The 400 free relay of Erin-Michelle Gordon, Bertuzzi, Front and Brittany Senn defeated Cleveland State (3:46.79). The meet closed out the regular season for the swimming team, and the divers will compete at the YSU Diving Invitational on Feb. 11. The Horizon League Championship begins Feb. 22 in Cleveland, Ohio. |

Youngstown -- Freshman Olivia Arnold won both distance freestyle events and anchored Youngstown State's winning 800-yard freestyle relay as the Penguins fell to California (Pa.) 144.50-142.50 Friday evening at the Beeghly Natatorium. YSU won 10 of the meet's 16 events, but Cal's depth was too much to overcome as at least two Vulcans scored in every event but diving. Cal finished the dual meet season 8-0. Arnold picked up YSU's first win in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:47.98 and swam a 5:17.74 in the 500 free. She added a second-place finish in the 100 breast and teamed up with Jessica Front, Erin-Michelle Gordon and Becky Bertuzzi in the free relay. Brittany Senn also had two individual victories with wins in the 50 free (25.07) and the 100 free (54.66), and Bertuzzi added a win in the 200 free (2:01.51) as the Penguins swept the freestyle events for the second-straight meet. Julia Darling won the 100 breast (1:08.93) and tied for first in the 200 IM (2:17.25). Cortney Harless earned her first collegiate win in the 1-meter board with a score of 218.20 while Kelly Reese tallied a collegiate-best score of 247.65 in the 3-meter. Front grabbed second-place finishes in the 100 free (56.93) and the 200 free (2:02.29) while Darling placed second in the 200 breast (2:31.63). Senn added a second-place finish in the 100 fly (1:02.51). The Penguins will take on Cleveland State and UIC on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Cleveland, Ohio. |
