Leveto Wins One-Meter; Dunn, Darling Break Records in Final Day

Brown Deer, Wis. -- Senior diver Kalyn Leveto won the one-meter board while senior Jordan Dunn set the 1,650-yard freestyle record and freshman Julia Darling broke the 200-yard breast record at the final day of the Horizon League Championship.
Leveto dominated the field with a score of 284.00 to win by nearly 30 points after a fourth-place showing in the three-meter on Thursday. Dunn's time of 17:56.50 broke Cathy Sipka's record that was set back in 1986 and was good enough for eighth place while Darling swam a 10th-place time of 2:28.27 to top senior Danielle Blagg's mark that was set earlier this year.
The Penguins finished sixth at the meet with 294 points ahead of Butler, which finished with 161. Cleveland State was within striking distance in fifth with a score of 311. UW-Green Bay won the event with a score of 817.
Erin Carter added a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly with a mark of 2:11.52 while Becky Bertuzzi placed 13th and Amanda Ladd was 16th.
Bertuzzi also placed 14th in the 100 free after recording the second-fastest time in school history in the prelims (53.74). Blagg placed 13th with a time of 2:36.65 in the 200 breast while Amanda Howard was 16th. Erika Gregos placed 13th in the 1,650 free with a time of 18:32.31 and Michele Von Duhn was 15th in 18:59.59.
Overall at the meet, the Penguins set six school records at the meet and had 28 lifetime bests.
Leveto will compete in the Zone C Diving Championships beginning March 11 in West Lafayette, Ind.
 
 
Carter Places Fourth In 400-Yard Individual Medley

Brown Deer, Wis. -- Senior Erin Carter highlighted the Youngstown State swimming and diving team's efforts on the third day of the Horizon League Championships finishing fourth in the 400-yard individual medley at the Schroeder YMCA Natatorium.
Carter, who won the 400-yard individual medley at last year's league meet, finished fourth with a time of 4:36.53. Wright State's Jessica Weidert won the event.
The highest finish by another Penguin on Day Three was Julia Darling's ninth-place performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. Darling finished with a time of 1:08.46 in the finals. Senior Danielle Blagg placed 12th in 100 breaststroke.
Sarah Porchak finished 10th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.24 while teammate Brittany Senn placed 12th.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Becky Bertuzzi, Jordan Dunn, Senn and Carter placed sixth with a time of 7:54.57.
Also, Bertuzzi finished 12th in 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.95.

The four-day championships conclude tomorrow with the finals of the one-meter dive, 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay being contested.
 
 
Dunn Sets School Mark in 1,000-Yard Freestyle On Day One

Brown Deer, Wis. -- During the first day of competition at the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday, YSU senior Jordan Dunn set a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.86. Dunn was the best Penguin finisher placing 10th overall while teammates Erika Gregos and Michelle Von Duhn placed 14th and 16th respectively.
Dunn's mark eclipsed the best of 10:50.95 set by Cathy Sipka on Feb. 12, 1983. Dunn shaved almost 11 seconds off her previous best time of 10:54.75 set at last year's Horizon League meet.
In the 200-yard medley relay, YSU placed sixth ahead of Cleveland State with a school-record time of 1:51.57. Katy Malys, Julia Darling, Sarah Porchak and Erin Carter teamed up to break a school record that was set in 1984.
The Penguins placed fifth (ahead of Cleveland State and Butler) in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the third-fastest time in school history, 1:39.82. Malys, Dunn, Brittany Senn and Missy Wiese combined to perform the best time by the program since March 1983.
In the preliminaries of the three-meter diving event, Kalyn Leveto finished fifth while Erin Mazzant was 17th and Courtney Harless was 18th.
After day one, UW-Green Bay held down the women's lead with 115 points while the host UW-Milwaukee was at 107.
 
 
Kalyn Leveto Named Horizon League Athlete of the Week

Indianapolis -- Youngstown State senior diver Kalyn Leveto has been named the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Leveto won the 1-meter event and placed second in the 3-meter at the Youngstown State Diving Invitational on Saturday morning. She finished with a score of 243.95 in the one-meter and tallied an 11-dive score of 382.1 to place second in the 3-meter behind Clarion's Jamie Wolf, who was the 2004 Division II National Champion in the event. The victory was Leveto's 24th of the year.
This marks the second time the Warren, Ohio, native has won the honor this season. She also earned the distinction on Nov. 2.
 
 
Leveto Wins 1-Meter at YSU Diving Invitational

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Kalyn Leveto won the 1-meter event and placed second in the 3-meter at the Youngstown State Diving Invitational on Saturday morning.
Leveto finished with a score of 243.95 in the one-meter and tallied an 11-dive score of 382.1 to place second in the 3-meter behind Clarion's Jamie Wolf.
Clarion's Ray Murray claimed the top spot in both men's events with a score of 376.25 in the 3-meter and 217.9 in the 1-meter. CU's Sean Clark placed second in both men's events.
Bowling Green's Carly Cusack finished second in the 1-meter with a score of 239.2 and third in the 3-meter with a 361.6 while Wolf placed third in the 1-meter with a tally of 232.45.
The Penguins will compete in the Horizon League Championship in Milwaukee beginning on Feb. 23.
 
 
Seniors Highlight Youngstown State's Win Over Cal (Pa.)

Youngstown -- Seniors Jordan Dunn and Erin Carter picked up two victories apiece to pace Youngstown State to a 110-80 victory over California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Senior Kalyn Leveto also won twice in exhibition diving events as YSU's 10 seniors competed in their final home meet.
YSU triumphed in seven of the meet's 11 swimming events, including claiming the top spot in the first six events.
Dunn took the top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:01.45 and the 500 free in 5:21.68 while Carter won the 200 IM in 2:15.22 and the 100 back in 1:02.17. Carter also swam the butterfly leg of the winning 200 medley relay squad.
Sophomore Becky Bertuzzi was victorious in the 200 free in 2:00.09 while Brittany Senn also picked up a win in the 50 free with a time of 25.33.
Earning second-place finishes for the Penguins were Erika Gregos in the 1,000 free (11:07.52) and Katy Malys in the 100 free (56.09). Senior Michelle Von Duhn added a third-place finish in the 500 free while Missy Wiese placed third in the 100 free.
Youngstown State's divers will take on Clarion at the YSU Diving Invitational on Saturday. The swimmers will break until the Horizon League Championship on Feb. 23.
 
 
Leveto Wins Both Boards Against Cleveland State, Wright State

Cleveland, Ohio -- Youngstown State senior Kalyn Leveto won 3-meter diving with a score of 283.20 and added a first-place score of 266.55 in the 1-meter to highlight YSU's day in a double dual with Cleveland State and Wright State on Friday.
The Penguins fell to the Vikings 129-105 and to Wright State 150-85.
Julia Darling provided Youngstown State's only other individual victory when she won the 200-yard breaststroke against Wright State with a personal-best time of 2:31.00. The freshman added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley in a personal-best 2:20.28 against Cleveland State.
Freshman Brittany Senn also clocked in with two personal-best marks, swimming a time of 25.43 in the 50 free to place second against both opponents and a 55.52 in the 100 free to place third. Jordan Dunn placed second in the against the Vikings in the 500 free in a personal-best time of 5:20.22 and added a second-place finish against CSU in the 1,000 free.
Senior Erin Carter placed second in the 200 fly against both squads with a time of 2:15.45 and added a second-place finish against the Vikings in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.47.
Erica Gregos added a personal-best time of 11:10.82 in the 1,000 free while Amanda Howard swam a personal-best 2:35.52 in the 200 back.
The 400 freestyle relay of Katy Malys, Dunn, Carter and Senn defeated Wright State in a season-best time of 3:43.29.
The Penguins will play host to California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday at 1 p.m. YSU's 10 seniors will be recognized before the meet.
