Leveto Wins 3-meter; Blagg, Carter Set Records

Chicago -- Junior diver Kalyn Leveto won the 3-meter diving event with an 11-dive score of 449.20 while Erin Carter and Danielle Blagg broke school records in the final day of competition to lift YSU to a sixth-place finish at the Horizon League Championship at the UIC Natatorium.
Carter broke the school record in the preliminary round of the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2 minutes, 12.48 seconds. Blagg's record came in the 200-yard breaststroke when she topped her old record with a 14th-place time of 2:33.79.
Leveto was named Diver of the Meet for her win in the 3-meter and second-place finish in the 1-meter. Coach Nick Gavolas earned Women's Diving Coach of the Year honors.
Carter finished eighth in the 200 fly while Becky Bertuzzi finished 15th. Lena Arens finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.53 while Darla Drummond added a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke.
The 400-yard freestyle relay tandem of Carter, Bertuzzi, Missy Wiese and Arens finished sixth with a time of 3:40.61. Erin Mazzant finished 13th in 3-meter diving while Lynea Harrill placed 16th.
The Penguins' sixth-place finish at the meet is the highest in their three-year stint in the Horizon League.
 
 
Carter Wins 400 Individual Medley to Highlight Day Three

Chicago -- Junior Erin Carter won the 400-yard individual medley with a school-record time of 4 minutes, 33.82 in the third day of competition at the Horizon League Championship at the UIC Natatorium.
Carter edged out UIC's Vanessa Segovia by eight-hundredths of a second to become YSU's first-ever Horizon League Champion in a swimming event. She also shattered her own school record that she set on Feb. 8 by nearly eight seconds.
Danielle Blagg also broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a ninth-place time of 1:09.46.
Kalyn Leveto was the top scorer in the preliminary round of 3-meter diving with a tally of 443.95.
The quartet of Carter, Jordan Dunn, Missy Wiese and Becky Bertuzzi finished sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay to earn 26 points.
Becky Bertuzzi finished 14th and Missy Wiese finished 16th in the 200-yard freestyle to earn three points and one point, respectively. Kim Hanley and Amanda Howard claimed the 15th and 16th spots in the 100 breast. Katy Malys added a 16th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Penguins are in sixth place through three days of competition with a 188-154 lead over Butler.
 
 
Records Fall in Conference Championship

Chicago -- Junior Erin Carter broke her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley and was part of a record-setting relay group in day two of the Horizon League Swimming & Diving Championships.
Carter topped her record first in the preliminary round, then topped it again in the final round with a fifth-place time of 2 minutes, 11.15 seconds. She also teamed up with Danielle Blagg, Becky Bertuzzi and Lena Arens in the 400-yard medley relay to swim a record-setting time of 4:05.33 to break a record that stood for more than 20 years.
Kalyn Leveto finished second in 1-meter diving with a final-round score of 238.70 to become YSU's top finisher in the two days of the championship.
Lena Arens finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.67 while Missy Wiese finished 16th in 25.56.
 
 
Leveto Earns Horizon League Athlete of the Week Honors

Indianapolis -- Junior diver Kalyn Leveto was named the Horizon League Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 16, league communications assistant Kyle Smith announced.
Leveto won the 3-meter diving event with an 11-dive score of 459.23 as the Youngstown State diving team fell to Clarion 61-40 in a diving dual at the Beeghly Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Leveto added a second-place finish in the 1-meter event with a 12-dive score of 465.60.
This is the second time this month that Leveto has earned the honor as she was also recognized on Feb. 3.

Youngstown -- Kalyn Leveto won the 3-meter diving event with an 11-dive score of 459.23 as the Youngstown State diving team fell to Clarion 61-40 in a diving dual at the Beeghly Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
Leveto added a second-place finish in the 1-meter event with a 12-dive score of 465.60. Jamie Wolf paced the Golden Eagles with a first-place finish in the 1-meter (528.68) and a third-place finish in the 3-meter (399.53).
Lynea Harrill finished fifth in the 1-meter with a score of 388.30 and seventh in the 3-meter with a tally of 286.20. Erin Mazzant finished sixth in the 3-mter with a 287.18 and seventh in the 1-meter with a 341.86. Cortney Harless finished eighth in the 1-meter.
The Penguins will compete in the Horizon League Championship on Feb. 25.
 
 
Carter Sets 400 IM Record at Butler Quadrangular

Carmel, Ind. -- Junior Erin Carter broke her own school record in the 400-yard individual medley with a first-place time of 4 minutes, 40.77 seconds to lead the Youngstown State swimming and diving team over Butler in a quadrangular with the Bulldogs, Wright State and Xavier on Sunday afternoon.
The Penguins defeated Butler 86-51, but fell to Wright State 86-52 and Xavier 93-45.
Kalyn Leveto provided YSU's only other victories, picking up two victories with first-place scores of 255.75 in 1-meter diving and 248.75 in 3-meter diving.
Lena Arens led the sprint group with a second-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.94 and a third-place finish in the 100 free with a personal-best 54.76. Missy Wiese finished fifth in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 free.
Jordan Dunn had a strong showing in the distance freestyle with a fourth-place finish in the 1,000 with a time of 11:14.56 and a fifth-place finish in the 500 with a time of 5:30.82.
Carter added third-place finishes in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.75 and the 200 back with a time of 2:13.72.
Also placing in the top five were Becky Bertuzzi with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free, Danielle Blagg with a fifth-place spot in the 200 breast and Kim Hanley with a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM.
Erin Mazzant and Lynea Harrill finished second and third, respectively, in 3-meter diving.
Carter's old mark in the 400 IM was 4:44.28, which she set at Duquesne on Nov. 8.
The Penguins will take two weeks off before traveling to Chicago to compete in the Horizon League Championship on Feb. 25.

Indianapolis -- Junior diver Kalyn Leveto was named the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 3, league communications assistant Kyle Smith announced.
Leveto shattered her own school record in 1-meter diving with a first-place score of 329.55 to lift the Penguins to a 123-97 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Leveto was YSU's lone double-winner in individual events at the meet as she also claimed the top spot in 3-meter event with a score of 256.90.
Her old 1-meter mark was 296.02, which she set against Cleveland State on Jan. 22, 2003.
Leveto, the reigning Horizon League Champion in the 1- and 3-meter events, has won the 3-meter board six times and the 1-meter five times this season.
