Williamson Named Horizon League Swimmer of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Sophomore swimmer Ashley Williamson (Dundee, Scotland) was named the Horizon League Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Williamson won four events at the four-team Youngstown State Invitational while also adding a second-place finish. She also set two school marks in the meet.

Williamson won the 200-yard butterfly in a school-record time of 2:09.40, the 200-yard IM in a school-best time of 2:10.77, the 100-yard backstroke (59.75 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.95 seconds). Williamson added a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.01).
UIC's Evan Dunn was named the Men's Swimmer of the Week while Valpo's Kurtis Malone and UIC's Sonia Peterson earned diver-of-the-week accolades.

The Penguins do not return to the pool for competition until mid-January.

Youngstown -- Sophomore Ashley Williamson won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, and senior Olivia Arnold won the 400-yard individual medley in the second day of the Youngstown State Invitational on Saturday.

Williamson was just off her school record in the 100 fly, out-touching Cal's (Pa.) Katie Matuszewski with a time of 57.95. She then won the 100 back in 59.75, which was two seconds faster than her prelim time.

Arnold winning 400-IM time of 4:36.20 was a personal-best by three seconds and three seconds faster than the closest swimmer.

Kirstin Walker, Megan Rupe and Alana Kane finished third through fifth in the 200 free, and Jen Johnstone was third in the 100 breast.

Sunday is the final day of the invitational. The preliminary heats will start at 9 a.m. while finals will begin at 4 p.m.
 
 
Arnold, Williamson Set Records On Day One of YSU Invite

Youngstown -- Senior Olivia Arnold and sophomore Ashley Williamson each set school record to lead the Youngstown State swimming and diving team to a day one lead on Friday at the Youngstown State University Swimming Invitational.

Arnold broke her own record with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.43, breaking her old record of 5:03.60 set on Nov. 7.

Williamson's first-place time of 2:10.77 in the 200-yard individual medley broke Erin Carter's four-year mark of 2:11.15 set on Feb. 28, 2004.

Nishani Cicilson turned in an impressive time of 24.77 for a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

Olivia Arnold Lowers 1,000 Free Record As Guins Fall at Akron

Akron, Ohio -- Senior Olivia Arnold lowered her school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, but the Youngstown State swimming and diving squad suffered a 155-77 setback to Akron on Friday night at the Ocasek Natatorium.

Arnold won the 1,000 free in time of 10:23.19, which was a second faster than the school record she set set last Friday. Arnold placed third in the 500 freestyle just one second out of first and .23 out of second place. She was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

The Penguins' 200 medley relay team placed second coming in just over a second-and-a-half behind Akron.
Jennifer Johnson finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:10.74.

Megan Rupe placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.21 seconds.

In the 50-yard freestyle Nishani Cicilson placed third while Kirstin Walker placed third in the 200-yard free. Caitlin Cook also placed third in the 100 butterfly.

The Penguins will play host to Ohio on Saturday at the Beeghly Center Natatorium. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
 
 
Arnold Breaks 500 and 1,000 Free Records in Double Dual Win

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Olivia Arnold broke a 24-year-old school record in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday night as the Penguins defeated Cleveland State 140-93 and Niagara 160-79 on at the Beeghly Center Natatorum.

Arnold swam a record-breaking 5:03.60 in the 500 eclipsing the mark set by Cathy Sipka in 1984. Arnold also lowered her school mark in the 1,000 freestyle and won the 200 breaststroke coming up just shy of another school mark.
