Penguins Win Two At Kent State Fall Invite |

Kent, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team improved to 6-1 in the 2003 fall season after defeating Toledo, 2-1, and Bowling Green, 2-0, at the Kent State Fall Softball Invitational. In the opener, freshman Megan Bricker scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the Penguins' victory. Junior Ashley Lockmiller and Karlie Burnell combined for a three-hitter while Burnell picked up her second victory of the fall season. Lockmiller tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts. Against Bowling Green, sophomore Kelly Murphy threw a three-hit shutout while senior Jenn Hartman went 2-for-2 with a run-scoring single. Sophomore Tiffany Patteson tripled and scored YSU's second run on sophomore Lacy Bronson's single in the bottom of the third. YSU concludes its fall season at the Ohio Charity Classic, Oct. 4-5, in Columbus, Ohio. |

Canfield, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team won the 2003 YSU Fall Softball Classic after going 4-1 last weekend. The Penguins defeated Clarion, 9-0, Robert Morris, 7-1, and Canisius, 2-1 and 2-0. Senior Jenn Hartman turned in an explosive performance, going 10-for-15 for a batting average of .667. Junior right-hander Ashley Lockmiller went 2-0 while tossing a one-hitter against Clarion and a five-hitter against Robert Morris. Junior Kiisha Warfield hit .462 while senior Amanda Berry batted .333 with two home runs and sophomore Tiffany Patteson hit .316. Sophomore Kelly Murphy tossed a three-hitter against Canisius with eight strikeouts in her only outing while freshman pitcher Karlie Burnell went 1-1 and threw a complete game two-hitter against Canisius. The Penguins continue their fall slate at the Kent State Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Kent, Ohio. |

Youngstown, Ohio – Coming off its best season in school history with 36 wins, a record of 36-17-1 and setting seven team records in 2003, the Youngstown State softball team begins its quest for the program’s first league championship when the Penguins open its 2003 fall season this weekend with the YSU Fall Classic. The Penguins, who are slated to play 14 games this fall, open the tournament against LaRoche College on Saturday, Sept. 20, at noon and host Clarion at 2 p.m. On Sunday, Youngstown State plays Canisius at 10 a.m. and Robert Morris at 2 p.m. This fall, the Penguins will also compete in the Kent State Fall Invitational Softball Tournament, Sept. 27-28, and the Ohio Charity Classic, Oct. 4-5, in Columbus, Ohio.
