Indiana Prep Star Fornal Inks Letter of Intent |

Youngstown, Ohio – Jamie Fornal, a native of Rochester, Ind., became the eighth recruit to sign a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and softball careers at Youngstown State University, Head Coach Christy Cameron announced on Monday. “Jamie is another all-around good athlete,” Cameron said. “She is a very intense player and has a strong arm behind the plate and a quick bat. Her athletic ability will also allow her to play different positions for us as well.” A catcher, Fornal led Rochester Community High School to a 22-6 overall record and guided the Zebras to the Class 2A Regional Finals last season. Fornal was also instrumental in leading the Rochester Community volleyball team to the state finals and the girls’ basketball team to the 2003-04 state championship. A three-time all-conference selection (at shortstop in 2002 and 2003 and at catcher in 2004), Fornal was named the team’s Most Valuable Player with a .390 overall batting average and 22 stolen bases. She also recorded a .542 conference batting average. In her four seasons at Rochester Community, Fornal never lost a conference softball game. Fornal joins Shauna Barry, McKenzie Bedra, Sarah Berry, Bethany Hafely, Lacey Hess, Becky Hibner and Kelli Sheibley in the 2004-05 YSU recruiting class. |
Patteson to Play for Canadian Developmental Team at Canada Cup |

Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State junior Tiffany Patteson was named to the Canadian Olympic Developmental Team and will compete at the 2004 Canada Cup, July 2-11, in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The Canadian Developmental Team opens the tournament against China, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. local time. Last year, Patteson was named to the Canadian National Softball Team and selected to represent her country at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. A two-time first-team All-Horizon League selection, Patteson hit .352 with two triples and three home runs while driving in 33 runs. The Guelph, Ontario, native also set YSU single-season records with 19 doubles and 37 runs scored in 2004. Patteson, who set the YSU single-season triples record with nine in 2003, ranked fifth in the nation with 0.38 triples per game. |

Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State softball Head Coach Christy Cameron announced on Tuesday (June 22) the addition of assistant coach and former Penguin Zetta Dumkrieger to the YSU softball staff. “Zetta is a great addition to our staff,” Cameron said. “ She has a great feel for the game and Youngstown State. She will help our players and program tremendously.” A 2003 graduate of Youngstown State with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, Dumkrieger was a two-year letterwinner at YSU after transferring from Coastal Carolina and helped the Penguins to school-best 36-17-1 record in 2003. During the 2002 campaign, Dumkrieger hit .273 with six doubles and one home run. In her two seasons at YSU, Dumkrieger started 46 consecutive games in right field for the Penguins. |
Hess Becomes Penguins’ Seventh Recruit |

Youngstown, Ohio – Lacey Hess, a native of Keizer, Ore., became the seventh recruit to sign a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and softball careers at Youngstown State University, YSU Head Coach Christy Cameron announced. Hess, who played two years at Odessa College in Odessa, Tex., is an infielder and will have two years of eligibility remaining. “Lacey is an all-around athlete,” Cameron said. “She runs, throws, fields and hits well and will be a great fit for our program. She has soft hands and has great lateral movement.” As a freshman at Odessa, Hess was named first-team all-conference and all-region and was selected the 2002 Player of the Year as a senior at McNary High School. Hess joins Shauna Barry, McKenzie Bedra, Sarah Berry, Bethany Hafely, Becky Hibner and Kelli Sheibley in the 2004-05 YSU recruiting class. |
