Softball Falls to Flames, 5-4, in 12 Innings |

Canfield, Ohio -- Senior Cheryl Cale turned in a yeoman's effort pitching 12 innings and throwing 183 pitches but UIC's Shannon Kehr's solo home run in the top of the 12th frame was deciding factor in a 5-4 win over the Youngstown State softball team on Sunday morning at McCune Park. The Penguins fall to 13-30 overall and 6-12 in the Horizon League while the Flames improve to 17-29 overall and 10-6 in the league. In the top of the seventh with a 3-1 lead, Cale was one strike from victory when Stephanie Chavez singled up the middle and plated Teresa Aguilar and Coryn Schmidt with the game-tying runs. The Flames took their first lead of the game in the top of the 10th inning when Brooke Frydendall, who doubled, tagged to third on a fly ball to right field and scored when the ball ricocheted into the Flames' dugout. The Penguins knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the frame when freshman Vicky Rumph singled home Haley Thomas, who walked and advanced to second on Kristina Rendle's sacrifice bunt. The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive singles by Jordan Ingalls and Autumn Grove put runners at first and second, and a third straight safety by Kristen Philen, who had three hits, plated Ingalls. In the fourth, Ingalls doubled to left-center field and was thrown out at home on Grove's single to right field. Philen singled pushing Grove to third then stole second base. Philen stole second and moved to third on an error and Grove scored on the play. Sophomore Amanda Palmore doubled to right-center field scored Philen to give the Penguins a 3-0 advantage. UIC's Devin Miller pitched eight innings of relief allowing just five hits and striking out 11. The Penguins close out the home portion its schedule when they host Niagara, Wednesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. |

Canfield, Ohio -- Senior Cheryl Cale scattered just seven hits, struck out four and allowed just two earned runs, but the Youngstown State softball team committed seven errors in an 8-0 loss in game one of a doubleheader against UIC on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park. The Penguins also lost the second game, 11-1. YSU falls to 13-29 overall and 6-11 in the Horizon League while the Flames improve to 16-29 overall and 9-6 in the league. The Penguins also tallied just four hits in the opener and only two in the night cap. Freshman Vicky Rumph belted her seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning before the Flames scored 11 straight runs. The finale in the series has been pushed up to 11 a.m. due to a forecasted thunderstorm Sunday afternoon. |

Canfield, Ohio -- Cleveland State's Amanda Macenko fired a one-hitter with six strikeouts to defeat the Youngstown State softball team, 9-0, in six innings at McCune Park on Wednesday evening. The Penguins fall to 13-27 overall and 6-9 in the Horizon League while the Vikings improve to 33-11 overall and 13-2 in the league. Macenko, who pitched 3.2 perfect innings in yesterday's second game, gave up a single to Autumn Grove in the bottom of the third inning and did not allow another Penguin to reach base. Cleveland State's Tess Sito went 3-for-4 with home run and drove in six of the Vikings' nine runs. The Penguins host UIC, Saturday, April 24, in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. |

Canfield, Ohio -- Sophomore Jordan Ingalls' two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth gave the Penguins their first lead, and her single in the bottom of the sixth sparked a four-run inning to lift the Youngstown State softball team to a 6-3 victory over Cleveland State in game two of a doubleheader at McCune Park. The Penguins dropped game one, 13-3. The Penguins improve to 13-26 overall and 6-8 in the Horizon League while Cleveland State falls to 32-11 overall and 12-2 in the league. Senior Cheryl Cale provided another strong performance in the circle tossing a complete game with three strikeouts and scattering nine hits. The Vikings plated a run in the top of the fourth and then two-time Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Amanda Macenko, who was working on a perfect game through 3.2 innings, gave up a two-out single up the middle to Kim Klonowski to break up the perfect game. Ingalls followed up with a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Cleveland State regained the lead in the top of the fifth on Dara Toman's two-out, two-run triple gave the Vikings a 3-2 edge. Sophomore Haley Thomas led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to center, junior Kristina Rendle was hit by a pitch and Vicky Rumph's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Klonowski reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Ingalls' single to left and an error by Cleveland State plated Thomas and Rendle to put the Penguins ahead, 4-3. Klonowski, who reached third on Ingalls' hit, scored with the Penguins' fifth run on a Macenko balk and Ingalls moved up to third. Af. ter a strikeout, senior Autumn Grove singled down the right-field line to score Ingalls and increase the Guins' edge to 6-3. In the first game, Rendle went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. The Penguins and Vikings conclude the series, Wednesday, at 6 p.m. |

INDIANAPOLIS Youngstown State sophomore Haley Thomas was named the Horizon League softball batter of the week. Thomas batted .550 (11-for-20) as her Penguin squad went 3-3 on the week, all in league action. The Simi Valley, Calif., native collected seven runs and three RBIs while also recording three multi-hit games. Thomas finished the week with a .800 slugging percentage, connecting on three doubles and one triple. The award marks her second weekly honor of the season (March 8) and of her career. |

Canfield, Ohio -- For the third time this season, sophomore Haley Thomas tied a school single-game record with four hits in game of but the Penguins committed eight error in the opener and five more in the nightcap and dropped a doubleheader to Wright State, 13-7, and 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park. The Penguins fall to 12-24 overall and 5-6 in the Horizon League while Wright State improves to 15-22-1 overall and 6-5 in the league. Thomas, who totaled six hits in the twinbill, went 4-for-4 with a triple, double and two singles in the opener while junior Kristina Rendle went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Freshman Vicky Rumph also went 2-for-4 and belted a home run in each game. The Penguins jumped out to a 4-1 lead, including a three-run first inning that featured a leadoff triple by Thomas and Rumph's two-run home run. The Raiders answered with four runs, three unearned, in the top of the third inning, two in the fourth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh. In the nightcap, Thomas, Rendle and sophomore Kristen Philen each recorded two hits, and Philen connected on her third home run of the season. Wright State, though, hammered out 12 hits and capitalized on five more Penguins errors in the 10-3 win. Detroit, Mich. -- Senior Cheryl Cale fired an impressive two-hit shutout with five strike outs to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 2-0 victory and a sweep of Horizon League foe Detroit on Thursday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. The Penguins improve to 12-22 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League and now have won four straight games for the first time since 2006. Cale, who picked up her sixth victory and second shutout of the season, retired the first 10 Detroit batters she face and out-dueled Detroit starter Kara Spinelli, who cooled off the Guins' hot bats scattering xx hits and striking out two. Sophomore Kristen Philen gave Cale all the offense she would need when she belted a solo home run - her second homer of the season - in the top of the second inning. In the top of the fourth inning, after singles by senior Autumn Grove and freshman Caroline Krombach, sophomore Haley Thomas added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to score Grove. Junior Kim Klonowski went 3-for-4 with a double - her 13th of the season. The Penguins return home to host Wright State in a three-game series, April 17-18, at McCune Park. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. |

Detroit, Mich. -- Sophomore Jordan Ingalls tied a school record with four hits in game one and added three more in the nightcap to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep against Detroit, 14-1, 11-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark. The Penguins, who improve to 11-22 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League, scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning of game one led by two-run home runs by junior Kim Klonowski and Ingalls, who went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs. Besides her two-run home run, Ingalls also drove in two more with a two-out single in her second at-bat in the inning. Also collected run-scoring singles in the top of the first were junior Kristina Rendle, sophomore Vicky Rumph, senior Autumn Grove and freshman Sarah Gabel. Overall, the Penguins tallied 14 hits in the opener. In the night cap, the Penguins, who cranked out 15 hits, struck quickly again scoring six runs in the top of the first inning and added three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Ingalls and Rumph each went 3-for-4 while Rendle, Klonowski and Gabel posted two hits apiece. Senior Cheryl Cale picked up her fifth victory of the season by striking out five and allowing five hits. The Penguins and Titans conclude the three-game series with a single game, Thursday, at 4 p.m. |

Chicago, Ill. -- The Youngstown State softball team used a six-run third inning spark by home runs by senior Autumn Grove and sophomore Jordan Ingalls en route to a 9-7 win in the series finale against Loyola on Sunday afternoon. The Penguins improve to 9-22 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League while the Ramblers fall to 12-14 overall and 4-4 in the league. The Penguins pounded out 12 hits, including two each from junior Kristina Rendle, freshman Vicky Rumph and sophomore Amanda Palmore. After falling behind 2-0 after one inning, Grove led of the top of the third with her fourth home run of the season - a solo shot - and cut the deficit in half. Palmore and sophoore Haley Thomas followed with singles and Rendle singled to center and tied the game by plating Palmore, but was thrown out at second base for the inning's second out. Junior Kim Klonowski single through the right side and scored Thomas with the go-ahead run, and after another single by sophomore Kristen Philen, Ingalls belted a three-run bomb to put the Penguins ahead, 6-2. The Ramblers answered with two in the bottom half of the third to bring the score to 6-4, but the Guins responded with one in the top of the fourth to go up 7-4. Palmore doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on Sarah Gabel's ground out to second and scored on a wild pitch. The Guins added two much-needed insurance runs to go ahead 9-4 in the top of the seventh when Grove's sacrifice fly scored Ingalls, who walked and moved to third on Rumph's double to center, and Gabel's single up the middle plated Rumph. The Ramblers put together a charge of their own scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff walk and to singles loaded the bases with no outs. Senior Cheryl Cale traded runs for out and induced two straight groundball outs but the Ramblers cut the deficit to 9-6. Following a single up the middle scored Jenna Grim to make the score 9-7 and an error by Klonowski, Cale forced a fly out to right field to end the game. The Penguins continue their Horizon League road trek with a three-game series at Detroit, April 14-15. First pitch on Wednesday is at 4 p.m. |

In the opener, sophomore Haley Thomas went 2-for-2, including a game-opening solo home run, to put the Penguins ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. After the Ramblers tied the game in the bottom half of the first, the Penguins regained the lead when sophomore Kristen Philen doubled home Autumn Grove in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 edge/ The Ramblers knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth and scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fifth. Senior Cheryl Cale was the hard-loser throwing a complete game with a strikeout and no walks and scattered nine hits. In the nightcap, the Ramblers scored seven run in the first four innings and the Loyola pitchers allowed just four hits. Philen doubled home sophomore Jordan Ingalls, who walked, and then scored on Sarah Gabel's single to left field for the Penguins' only two runs. Akron, Ohio -- Youngstown State used an eight-run sixth inning to turn a 5-3 deficit into an 11-5 lead and banged out 14 hits to knock off Akron, 11-7, in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field. The Penguins dropped the second game, 6-0. Youngstown State improves to 8-20 overall while Akron moves to 12-14 overall. For the second-time this season, sophomore Haley Thomas tied the YSU single-game hits record with four, including a two-run triple in the Penguins' eight-run sixth. Sophomore Jordan Ingalls and freshman Vicky Rumph each tallied three hits while sophomore Kristin Philen added two singles. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the sixth, the Penguins sent 13 batters to the plate en route to their eight runs. With one out and the bases loaded, freshman pinch hitter Caroline Krombach knotted the game at 5-5 with a single to right-center field that scored Autumn Grove, who walked, and Philen, who singled. Thomas then drilled a line drive down the left-field line that scored pinch-runner Kristina Davidson and Krombach with the go-ahead runs. After two-out Akron error that scored Thomas, Grove's fielder's choice and another Zips' error scored Klonowski and Ingalls two-run double plated Grove and Rumph, who singled, with the Penguins' 10th and 11th runs. Junior Danielle Chase picked up her second win of the season scattering nine hits and striking out four in a complete-game performance. In the nightcap, Akron's Heather Bauer fired a five-hit shutout with three strikeouts. Akron also capitalized on three Penguins errors to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to put the game out of reach. Klonowski went 2-for-3 in the second game. Due to impending thunderstorms in northwest Ohio on Wednesday, Youngstown State's doubleheader at Toledo has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced. The Penguins face Loyola in a three-game series beginning Saturday, April 10, at 2 p.m. |

Canfield, Ohio -- Senior Cheryl Cale struck out five and scattered just seven hits in a complete-game 4-2 win over Butler on Sunday afternoon at McCune Park to give Head Coach Brian Campbell his 300th career victory. The Penguins improve to 7-19 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League while Butler falls to 26-7 overall and 4-1 in the league. The Penguins also pounded out 10 hits led by junior Kim Klonowski's 3-for-4 outing while sophomore Haley Thomas and freshman Vicky Rumph each added two singles. Youngstown State jumped on Butler starting pitcher Breanna Fisher early with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Thomas began the game with a single through the right side and advance to second on a wild pitch. Klonowski drove in Thomas with a single through the left side. In the bottom of the third, the Penguins ballooned their lead to 4-0 when Kristina Rendle reached on an error to lead off the frame. After Klonowski doubled to put runners on second and third, Rumph singled to left field to score Rendle and moved up to second on a errant throw. Sophomore Kristen Philen single to center scoring Klonowski and Rumph scored when sophomore Jordan Ingalls reached on another Bulldog miscue. Cale had allowed just four hits through five innings, but Butler's Bridget Paine led off the sixth with a single and later scored on Jenny Esparza's two-out single to left field to cut the YSU lead to 4-1. In the top of the seventh Cale struggle a bit hitting pinch-hitter Devin Dearing with two strikes and gave up a run on Lauren McNulty's sacrifice fly to right field. A two-out walk to Erin Falkenberry loaded the bases but Cale induced a ground ball out to second base to end the game. The Penguins return to action against Akron, Tuesday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. at Akron in a rescheduled doubleheader from March 23. |

Canfield, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team fell to 6-19 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League after dropping a pair of league contests to Butler, 6-0, and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park. The Bulldogs improved to 26-6 overall and 4-0 in league play. In the opener, Youngstown State's Cheryl Cale and Butler Jenny Esparza battled in a classic pitcher's duel for five innings. Cale had allowed just three hits and struck out five while Esparza only allowed two hits. In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs finally figured out Cale and used a four-run inning to break open the game. The Bulldogs added two more in the seventh inning and Esparza picked up her 12th win of the season allowing just three hits and struck out 12. In the second game, the Bulldogs pounded out 12 hits in just five innings and Jennifer Chasteen and Breanna Fisher combined for a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts. The Penguins and Bulldogs conclude the series Sunday at Noon at McCune Park. |
