Moraga, CA - Solid pitching and live bats led the Gaels in a two-game sweep of Youngstown State this afternoon. Saint Mary's defeated the Penguins, 6-1 in the first game of the doubleheader, and went on to post a 6-3 win in the nightcap. With the two wins the Gaels improve to 3-6 on the year, while Youngstown state drops to 0-2. The Youngstown State hurlers could not find a solution for the hot bat of Jenna Smith, as the sophomore recorded three runs, four hits, and five RBI, including three homeruns on the day. Smith's last dinger of the day came in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the sophomore recorded a walk-off homerun to give Saint Mary's the 6-3 win. With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh Molly Bergeson led off with a walk, followed by Sandra Ruezga reaching on a throwing error while attempting a sacrifice bunt. Then Smith, who did not record a homerun in her freshman campaign, belted her third homerun of the afternoon, clinching the Gaels' third win this season. Bergeson also swung a heavy bat for the Gaels, posting three runs, five hits and two RBI, with three of her hits being triples. Bergeson also provided the Gaels with consistent pitching in the second game, as she pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, earning her first win of the season. In game one, senior pitcher Megan Galloway tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out eight batters in her first win of the season. Galloway went 3-for-6 from the plate in addition to her stellar play in the circle. |
