| Youngstown, Ohio -- Youngstown State senior Jen Perugini closed out her intercollegiate basketball playing career in style after being named the Penguins' Most Valuable Player at the team's post-season banquet on Sunday. Perugini, a First-Team All-Horizon League selection this season, ranked ninth nationally with 10.7 rebounds per game in 2004-05. She also led the Horizon League in rebounding and ranked second in scoring at 14.4 points per game. The 6-foot-2 native of Sault Saint Marie, Ont., ranks 12th all-time at YSU with 1,202 career points and fourth with 905 rebounds and is the only player in school history to record 1,000 career points, 900 rebounds and 100 blocked shots. Senior Cathy Hanek was tabbed the team's Best Defensive Player while junior Michelle Holmes garnered the Most Improved Player Award and sophomore Kristy Gaudiose earned the Penguin Mental Attitude Award. YSU ended the season ranking 24th nationally with a .363 3-point percentage and 39th with 6.1 3-pointers made per game. YSU was also 20th in the country with a .752 free throw percentage. Senior Barb Fabianova ranked 41st nationally with 2.4 3-pointers made per game and 46th nationally with a .386 3-point field-goal percentage. Freshman Lauren Branson also made the national statistics ranking 21st with 5.7 assists per game. |

| The Wright State women's basketball team jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and held off a Youngstown State rally in the second half to defeat the Penguins 66-52 in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Tournament at the Nutter Center Thursday night. WSU held the lead the entire game as the Raiders scored the first six points of the contest and after YSU cut the margin to 8-7, followed with 12 unanswered points, including threes by Jeanette Woodberry and Rhea Mays, to go up 20-7. Wright State, who shot 47 percent in the first half to just 26 percent for Youngstown State, gradually added to the lead until the Raiders took a 37-19 advantage into the break. A 12-1 Penguin run to start the second half, 10 of those coming from Cathy Hanek, trimmed the Raider lead to 38-31, but WSU answered with nine straight, four by Brittney Whiteside, to push the margin back up to 47-31. Youngstown State was able to close the gap to under double figures twice more, the final time being 52-43 after a Barb Fabianova three with 8:20 to play, but a jumper and later three by Tyanda Hammock keyed a 9-2 spurt to put the game out of reach. The Raiders shot 45 percent from the field overall compared to 38 percent for Youngstown State and Wright State also had a 42-30 rebounding advantage, including 14-9 on the offensive end and hit 11 of 15 free throws to YSU's nine of 14. Angie Griffith led all scorers with 14 for Wright State and, in the process, became the 14th Raider all-time to reach the 1000-point plateau. She also had six rebounds and four assists. Whiteside added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds and Mays had 11 points. Jen Perugini closed out her great career with 12 points and nine rebounds for Youngstown State (12-16) while Hanek finished with 10. Wright State, now 18-10, advances to the semifinals on Sunday, March 6, at the Nutter Center against #7 seed Detroit, who upset #2 UW-Milwaukee 59-49 in other quarterfinal action. | Indianapolis, Ind. – Youngstown State senior Jen Perugini was named All-Horizon League First-Team by a panel of the League’s head coaches, sports information directors and selected members of the media, the League office announced on Monday. YSU freshman Lauren Branson was tabbed to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. Both players helped the Penguins to a 12-15 mark, a nine-win improvement from the 2003-04 campaign. Perugini, who is the first YSU player to earn first-team all-league honors since the 2000-01 season, ranks second in the Horizon League in scoring at 14.5 points per game and leads the league in rebounding with 10.7 boards per contest. Perugini also recorded 13 double-doubles this season, including eight against Horizon League opponents. Perugini was also named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 28. Last week, the 6-foot-2 senior averaged 17 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the field and 76.9 percent from the free throw line in leading the Penguins to victories over Detroit, 71-68, and UW-Milwaukee, 75-68. She scored 17 points with 11 boards over the Titans and posted 17 points with 10 rebounds against the Panthers. Branson, a 5-foot-6 point guard, led the Horizon League with 5.8 assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.77, and ranked 13th with 1.63 steals per game.
