Penguins Fall One-Point Short in Tough Loss to Butler

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's basketball suffered a tough 61-60 loss to Butler on Thursday at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, who trailed 53-47 with seven minutes left in the second half, clawed back to tie the game three times down the stretch but was never able to wrestle the lead from the Bulldogs.

YSU (12-14 overall and 7-8 in the Horizon League) last tied the game at 57 on a basket by Velissa Vaughn. From there, Butler's Susan Lester made a driving basket to give the Bulldogs a 59-57 lead.

Ashley Pendleton's free throw cut the deficit to 59-58 but Butler's Tara Miller drilled two free throws to push lead to 61-60.

Vaughn made two free throws to get the Guins within one with 59 seconds remaining. The Penguins defense held when Lade Akande's driving shot missed.

YSU called time out to set up a final play with 24 seconds remaining. However, Butler's defense harassed the Penguins into a turnover with two seconds left.

For the game Youngstown State shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) while Butler was 20-of-46 (43.5 percent).
Vaughn scored a game-high 21 points while Heather Karner had 13. Akande had 12 for Butler.

The first half featured five lead changes and three ties, but the Guins scored six of the final eight points grabbing a 33-30 halftime advantage.

Vaughn scored 12 points to lead the way for the Penguins, including a 3-pointer at the 13:37 mark giving YSU a 15-8 lead during a 7-0 run.

After Butler (18-9 and 8-8) scored six straight points to get within 15-14, the Guins were able to hold a onto the lead until the Bulldogs went in front 23-22 on a Lade Akande basket with 4:35 left. YSU quickly answered scoring the next five points to regain the lead before Butler went in front 28-27 on a Melanie Thornton basket.

Buckets by Ashley Pendleton, Vaughn and Nikita LaFleur helped give the Penguins a three-point advantage at the break.

Saturday the Penguins close out the regular-season portion of their home schedule against Valparaiso. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 4:35 p.m.
 
 
Vaughn's Career-High 28 Not Enough in Loss to Cleveland State

Youngstown -- Junior Velissa Vaughn scored a career-high 28 points but the Youngstown State succumbed to a hot-shooting Cleveland State squad and dropped an 82-66 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins fall to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in the Horizon League while the Vikings, who shot 53.8 percent from the floor, improves to 15-10 overall and 9-5 in the Horizon League.

With the scored tied at 11-11 in the first four minutes of the game, Vaughn, who went 11-of-20 from the field, hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to give the Guins a five-point edge, 16-11, at the 14:17 mark.

However, the Vikings used a 15-1 run over the next five minutes to take a nine-point lead, 26-17, with nine minutes remaining in the half.

Vaughn, who scored 14 points in each half, scored seven of the Penguins' next 11 points, including a 3-pointer and two jumpers, to pull the Guins within two, 30-28, at the 5:10 mark.

After Cleveland State's Kailey Klein, who scored 24 points, hit a 3-pointer to boost the Viking lead back to five.

YSU junior Kelsey Gurganus hit a jumper to cut the deficit back down to three, 33-30, at the 3:40 mark, but the Vikings closed out the stanza out-scoring the Guins, 14-3, to take a 47-33 lead into the lockerroom.

In the second half, Cleveland State expanded its lead to 18 points within the first two minutes of the half but Vaughn hit a jumper and senior Lauren Branson nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Penguins within 12 points, 56-44, at the 15:49 mark.

The Guins would not get any closer and the Vikings, who were led by Dominque Butler's 25 points, led by as many as 24 points, 78-54, at the 4:03 mark.

The Guins continue their three-game homestand against Butler, Thursday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
 
Four Score in Double Figures As Women's Basketball Picks Up Huge Win at Wright State

Fairborn, Ohio -- Four players scored in double figures and the Youngstown State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from behind the 3-point line en route to a 66-58 win over Wright State on Saturday afternoon at the Nutter Center.

Senior Heather Karner led the Penguins (12-12, 7-6 Horizon League) with a game-high 19 points while senior Lauren Branson scored 17 points. Tiara Scott added 12 points and senior Jessica Schloemp contributed 10 points.

Leading by seven points, 46-39, five minutes into the second half, Branson hit consecutive 3-pointers and Karner converted two free throws to balloon the Guins advantage to 15, 54-39, at the 11:50 mark.

The Penguins, who went 9-of-18 from behind the 3-point line, extended their edge to as many as 17 points, 59-42, after Karner nailed her fifth 3-pointer of the game with 6:36 to go.

Wright State (scored 10 straight points to pull back within seven points, but Branson converted 7-of-8 free throws to seal the victory.

In the first half, the Penguins trailed 7-6 but used a 16-3 run to take a 12-point lead, 22-10, midway through the first half. Karner paced the Penguins during their run with two 3-pointers and a jumper.

Wright State rallied to cut the YSU advantage down to five, 22-17, at the 7:53 mark but layup by Schloemp and a 3-pointer by Velissa Vaughn pushed the Penguins ahead 27-19.

The Guins, who shot 52.2 percent in the first half, went into the lockerroom with a 36-27 lead at halftime.
The Guins return home to host in-state rival Cleveland State, Saturday, Feb. 23. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m.
 
 
Scott Scores 22 As Women's Basketball Holds Off Detroit, 62-59

Detroit, Mich. -- Junior Tiara Scott scored a game-high 22 points and junior Velissa Vaughn hit a mid-range jumper with 38 seconds remaining to lift the Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 62-59 over Detroit on Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.

The Penguins improve to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 3-19 overall and 0-11 in the league.

Detroit's Zemora Davis hit a jumper just under a minute remaining to give the Titans a 59-58 lead.

After Vaughn's jumper put the Guins back up by one, senior Heather Karner, who scored 12 points, canned two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.

The Guins also connected on 14-of-18 from the free throw line in the second half.

In the first half, the Penguins trailed by two, 19-17, at the 8:15 mark, but used a 10-run over the four minutes to take an eight-point lead, 27-19, with 4:07 to go.

Detroit, however, outscored the Penguins, 9-4, to close out the half and the Guins led at halftime by just three, 31-28.

The Penguins and Titans each shot 38.8 percent and while the Titans took 18 more shots than YSU, the Guins went 21-of-26 from the charity stripe for the game.

Women's Basketball Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker to Milwaukee, 94-87

Youngstown -- Four players scored in double figures and three scored more than 20 points for the first time since 1996 but the Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 94-87 double-overtime heartbreaker to Milwaukee on Saturday evening at the Beeghly Center.

Junior Tiara Scott led the Penguins (10-12, 5-6 Horizon League) with 24 points and 10 rebounds while senior Heather Karner and junior Ashley Pendleton, who scored a career high, each posted 20 points.

After a 3-pointer by Aubri Rote with 14 ticks remaining gave the Panthers a 71-69 lead, Pendleton hit a jumper with three seconds left in regulation force the overtime.

The Panthers (12-10, 7-4 Horizon League) jumped out to a five-point lead in the first overtime, 76-71, after a 3-pointer by Rote and two free throws from Traci Edwards, who scored 34 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Two free throws by Scott and a jumper by Nitika LaFleur brought the Penguins within one, 76-75, with 2:29 remaining.

After a free throw by Edwards, Scott knotted the game at 77-77 with two charity tosses with 1:32 left and her three-point play with 48 seconds remaining gave the Penguins an 80-77 edge.

UWM's Lindsay Laur cut the Guins' lead to one, 80-79, with a jumper with 28 seconds on the clock.

After YSU's Lauren Branson converted one of two free throws, Edwards tied the game at 81-81 with a jumper with six seconds left.

Scott's put back of a missed 3-pointer by Karner was blocked by Laur to force the second overtime.

The Panthers began the second overtime scoring the first 10 points to take a 91-81 lead at the 1:49 mark and the Penguins would never recover.

In the first half, the Guins trailed by as many as eight points, 30-22, after the first 16 minutes, Penguins outscored the Panthers, 7-2, to close out the half trailing by three, 32-29.

YSU shot 40.5 percent from the field while UWM shot 41.1 percent but the Panthers converted 54.5 percent in the extra sessions.

The Guins hit the road for two games beginning with a Valentine’s Day contest against Detroit, Thursday, Feb. 14. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Calihan Hall. The Guins also visit Wright State, Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Nutter Center.
 
 
Cold Shooting Dooms Guins in Loss to UWGB

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team suffered a tough shooting performance en route to dropping a 75-47 decision to Green Bay on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins (10-11 overall and 5-5 in the Horizon League) were within four points midway through the first half, but made only one field goal the remaining 9:40 of the first stanza and trailed by 14 at the break.

YSU trailed 18-14 after Velissa Vaughn's hoop with 9:40 left. However, UWGB (17-4 and 9-1) scored the next seven points to go in front 25-14.

The Guins trailed 37-23 at halftime. For the first half, YSU made 6-of-26 field goal attempts (23.1 percent), while converting 3-of-15 from 3-point range.

Toni Roscoe's 3-pointer was the only bucket for the Penguins the final nine-plus minutes. Roscoe's basket with 4:15 left made the score 27-19 in favor of the Phoenix.

Green Bay shot 48.3 percent making 14-of-28 attempts. Both teams were perfect from free-throw as YSU made 8-of-8 and the Phoenix were 7-fo-7.

In the second half, Green Bay shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the floor while the Penguins shot just 38.5 percent from the field.

Junior Ashley Pendleton led the Penguins with eight points - all in the second half - on 4-of-6 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Guins return to action on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. when they play host to Milwaukee.
 
 
Cold-Shooting Dooms Penguins in 63-48 Loss at Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team (10-10, 5-4 Horizon League) shot just 32.2 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers and dropped a 63-48 decision to Butler (14-6, 4-5 Horizon League) on Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Junior Tiara Scott led the Penguins with 17 points and eight rebounds while junior Velissa Vaughn scored 13 points.

The Penguins jumped out to an 8-4 lead within the first six minutes after Vaughn scored the game first five points on a jumper and a 3-pointer.

Butler, though, retaliated with a 16-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 10-point 20-10 lead with 6:17 left in the half. After senior Heather Karner hit a jumper at the 10:40 mark to bring the Guins withiin two, 12-10, YSU went scoreless over the next 7:40 when Scott's three-point play cut the deficit to seven, 20-13, with three minutes remaining.

Leading by nine at the intermission, 26-17, Butler scored six of the first eight points of the second half to extend their advantage to 13, 32-19, at the 18:12 mark.

A jumper by Scott and two 3-pointers by Vaughn brought the Penguins within five 32-27, with 16 minutes left.

After an exchange of baskets held the difference at five, 34-29, Butler would score eight straight points to bolster its lead back to 13 and the Guins would never recover.

For the game, Scott and Vaughn combined for 12 of YSU 19 field goals and 30 of its 48 points.

Butler shot just 36.4 percent from the field overall but connected on 46.7 percent in the second half.

The Guins return home to host league leader Green Bay, Thursday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is slated for 5:15 p.m. at the Beeghly Center and is part of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader.
 
 
Three-Point Barrage Leads Women's Basketball Past Valparaiso, 92-79

Valparaiso, Ind. -- The Youngstown State women's basketball made 14 3-pointers and erased a nine-point second-half deficit to earn its first Horizon League road win in a 92-79 victory over Valparaiso on Thursday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Center.

Senior Heather Karner led four Penguins scoring in double figures with 21 points while junior Tiara Scott poured in 20 points and grabbed nine boards. Junior Velissa Vaughn added 16 points and senior Jessica Schloemp recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

YSU's 14 3-pointers is tied for the second-highest total in school history.

Trailing 60-51 with 16 minutes remaining in the game, the Penguins uses a 15-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 66-61 lead, which they would never relinquish.

After jumpers by Kelsey Gurganus and Schloemp brought the Guins within six, Schloemp drained a 3-pointers, Scott converted a layup and senior Lauren Branson's steal and layup put the Penguins ahead 62-61. Vaughn buried a 3-pointer at the 11:32 mark to give the Guins a five-point cushion.

The Penguins (10-9, 5-3 Horizon League) lead ballooned to 10, 80-70 with six-and-a-half minutes left but the Crusaders (9-10, 4-4 Horizon League) cut the deficit to three after a 7-0 run.

Vaughn, however, scored the next five points on a layup and 3-pointer to cushion the Penguins advantage to eight, 85-77, with 2:55 remaining.

The Crusaders would not get any closer.

In the first half, the Penguins, who made 8-of-18 3-pointers in the first half, and Crusaders battled through the first seven minutes evenly before Valparaiso went on 9-0 run to take a 25-17 lead midway through the stanza.

YSU answered with a 15-7 run - keyed by two 3-pointers by Karner - over the next five minutes to knot the game at 32-32. at the 5:31 mark after two free throws by Jessica Schloemp.

The Crusaders, who shot 51.7 percent before halftime, built a five-point edge before Karner hit her fourth triple of the half and converted two charity tosses to tie the game at 37-37 with 4:28 remaining.

After Valparaiso's Leah Hochstetler drained a 3-pointer to give the Crusaders a 40-37 edge, Kelsey Gurganus responded with a 3-pointer and Schloemp's put-back gave the Guins a 42-40 lead with 2:08 left.

Valparaiso scored six of the next eight points to take a 46-44 lead into the lockerroom at the intermission.
The Guins play the third of three straight road contests at Butler, Saturday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. (EST) at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
