Youngstown -- A 27.6 percent shooting effort outweighed another feisty effort from the Youngstown State women's basketball team on Monday as the Penguins fell 73-45 to Bowling Green at Beeghly Center. The Falcons forced 23 YSU miscues and converted those into a 25-9 edge in points off turnovers. Bowling Green also had scoring advantages of 30-18 in the paint and 13-3 on the fast break. Sophomore guard Macey Nortey scored 14 points and had five assists to lead YSU. Freshman forward Brandi Brown finished with nine points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds. Tracy Pontius had 16 points, five assists and four steals for Bowling Green. Lauren Prochaska chipped in with 12 points, and Tara Breske added 10. Bowling Green led the entire contest, but YSU stayed within 10 points of the five-time defending Mid-American Conference champions through the first 16 minutes. Bowling Green led 13-5 on Kelly Zuercher's jumper around the 13-minute mark, but YSU chipped away and got within three when Rachael Manuel's bucket made the score 17-14 with 9:51 remaining. The Falcons then went on a 9-2 run to go ahead by double digits for the first time, and they outscored the Penguins 13-3 over the final five minutes of the first half to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room. An 8-0 run early in the second half upped Bowling Green's lead to 24, and the Falcons closed out the contest by scoring the final seven points. The 73-45 final was the largest margin of the game. Youngstown State will have an 11-day break for the holidays before it opens the Horizon League and 2010 portions of the season. The Penguins will host Milwaukee on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 4:35 p.m. |

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Buffalo outscored Youngstown State 47-18 in the first half and hit 10 of its first 12 shots to open the second half in a 92-38 win on Sunday at Alumni Arena. Bojana Dimitrov scored 13 points in her return from a two-game absence, and Rachael Manuel added 10 points for the Penguins, who were outrebounded 51-23. The rebounding margin included a 21-6 edge in the second half. Brittany Hedderson scored 25 points and was 9-for-13 from the floor to lead Buffalo. YSU missed its first four shots of the game and started 2-for-9 as Buffalo built a 15-4 lead with 14:38 remaining. A Kenya Middlebrooks jumper cut the score to 15-6 on the Penguins' next possession, but Buffalo scored 12 of the next 15 points to go up 27-9 and never led by fewer than 13 the rest of the contest. Once Nytor Longar hit back-to-back buckets to give the Bulls their 27-9 lead with 9:14 left, Dimitrov scored the next five points to make the score 27-14 with 8:03 remaining. The Penguins, though, did not make another field goal until Manuel's bucket with 48 seconds remaining. By then, Buffalo had taken its largest advantage of the half at 47-16. The Bulls hit 10 of their first 12 shots to start the second half and led 72-22 with 11:22 remaining. The Bulls outshot the Penguins 52.9 percent to 25 percent. They also led 50-10 in points in the paint and 39-11 in points off turnovers. The Penguins will conclude a three-game road trip on Thursday at Saint Francis (Pa.). Tipoff in Loretto, Pa., is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN. |

Akron, Ohio -- Akron scored the first nine points of the game and withstood several runs by a gritty Youngstown State squad in a 75-63 win on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena. YSU freshman Brandi Brown posted her third career double-double, scoring a career-high 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Freshman post Brandi Brown had 24 points and 14 rebounds, accounting for 10 of the Penguins' 22 field goals.Youngstown State falls to 0-8 while Akron improves to 4-4. The Zips defeated YSU for just the third time in the last 14 meetings. Akron went on runs of 9-0 and 10-1 in the first half and a mini 6-0 run in the second half that gave the Zips a 14-point, 50-36 lead with 14:01 to play. Akron went up by as many as 17 with just under five minutes to play, but YSU battled its way back and trailed just 71-63 with 1:12 left. Kenya Middlebrooks missed a 3-point attempt that would have cut the score to five for the first time since the first half, and Akron scored the final four points for the final margin. "I have a little smile on my face because we're gritty, we have a lot of heart, and we're never going to give up," YSU Head Coach Cindy Martin said. "It was amazing to see those five that I had in the game - Makala, Macey, Kenya, Rachael and Brandi - not give up. They pretty much played the last eight minutes straight. We just didn't stop them enough in the first half." Brown was 10-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe to lead YSU. Macey Nortey played the entire game and scored 14 points to go along with her ix assists. Middlebrooks added 14 points and was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. "Brandi Brown had a great performance today, and she's a good player." Martin said. "I sure we wish a few more girls to keep fresh legs out there at times." YSU was 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the free-throw line, which was a big improvement from the 53 percent it was shooting entering the game. The Penguins, though, went 1-for-15 from 3-point range despite shooting 35 percent through their first seven contests. Overall, YSU shot 34.4 percent, and Akron shot 42.4 percent. YSU had a season-low three steals, but it forced 15 turnovers with its pressure defense, nine of which came in the second half. Kara Murphy scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half to lead Akron, and Rachel Tecca had 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Akron scored the first nine point of the first half and led 15-4 on a Murphy free throw with 14:09 remaining. The Zips led 19-8 when Youngstown State went on an 8-2 run to get within five on a Middlebrooks triple at the 9:47 mark. Akron scored the next four points out of a timeout, and Rachael Manuel hit a jumper with 8:27 remaining that made the score 25-18. That was the Penguins' last field goal of the opening half as their final eight points came from the free throw line. YSU made 11-of-14 from the stripe in the period, but Akron closed out the half on a 10-1 run once the Penguins cut the margin to 30-25. Kyle Baumgartner had 11 points and seven rebounds in the half, making made 4-of-5 from the floor and both of her free-throw attempts. Brown led YSU with 12 points and six rebounds, and she had nine of the Penguins' first 13 points in the first 10 minutes. Youngstown State is off for the next eight days for finals. The Guins' next contest will be Dec. 13 at Buffalo. |

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP)—Pepper Wilson scored 13 points to lead six Pittsburgh players in double figures and the 19th-ranked Panthers cruised to an 89-37 win over Youngstown State on Wednesday night. Katie Popovec had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Pittsburgh (6-0), which never trailed and outrebounded the smaller Penguins 56-26. Jania Sims scored 11 and Sophronia Sallard 10 for the Panthers. Selena Nwude and Shayla Scott also scored 10 apiece, all in the first half. Brandi Brooks had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Youngstown State (0-6), which trailed 47-19 at halftime. The 6-foot-6 Wilson scored all of her points in 10 minutes in the second half, going 6 for 6 from the field. |
