Schloemp's Game-High 18 Leads Penguins Past Cleveland State, 65-55

Youngstown -- Junior Jessica Schloemp scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and sophomore Monique Godfrey poured in 16 to lead the Youngstown State women's basketball team past Cleveland State, 65-55, on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins improve to 5-13 overall and 3-5 in the Horizon League while Cleveland State falls to 5-16 overall and 2-6 in the league.

With the game tied 6-6 with 13 minutes left in the first half, Youngstown State used an eight-minute, 18-0 run to take a 24-6 lead at the 5:34 mark.

Sophomore Velissa Vaughn broke the tie with a 3-pointer with 12:55 to go and 3-pointers by Schloemp, Godfrey and another by Schloemp put the game out of reach.

The Penguins, who shot 48.1 percent in the first half, extended their lead to as many as 23 points, 35-12, at the 1:37 mark after another 3-pointer by Godfrey.

Cleveland State outscored the Penguins, 40-30, in the second half thanks in part to a 47.1 field-goal percentage but never able to cut the YSU advantage to single digits.

Youngstown State continues its home stand against UIC, Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
 
 
Hot-Shooting Phoenix Too Much For Lady Pens, 83-49

Green Bay, Wis. -- Youngstown State ran into a hot-shooting UW-Green Bay squad, which sot 54.7 percent from the field, and reining Horizon League Player of the Year Nicole Soulis scored a game-high 22 points as the Penguins dropped an 83-49 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Phoenix Sports Center.

The Penguins fall to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix extended their win streak to 12 games and improved to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the league.

Sophomore Monique Godfrey led the Penguins with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.

Along with Soulis, the Phoenix, who shot 68 percent in the first half, placed three others in double figures. Natalie Berglin posted 13 points while Kati Harty and Erin Templin each added 11 points.

The Penguins return home to host Cleveland State, Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2:05 p.m.
 
 
Strong Second-Half Leads Penguins Past Detroit, 55-39

Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half and junior Heather Karner scored all 10 of her points after halftime to lead the Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 55-39 victory on Saturday evening at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, who have won two straight game for the first time this season, improve to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Detroit, who trailed 15-8, at halftime, used a 12-4 run to take a 20-19 lead on a Kandace Jones 3-pointer at the 15:19 mark.

Karner hit two 3-pointers over the next four minutes to lead YSU on a 12-3 run which gave the Penguins an eight-point edge, 31-23, with 11:04 remaining.

A lay up by Heather Hatter brought the Titans within six, 31-25, but Godfrey led the Penguins on a 13-3 run with eight points, including two 3-pointers, to give YSU an insurmountable 16-point lead with 6:38 left.

YSU led by as many as 20 points, 53-33, with 2:14 to go.

Youngstown State visits UW-Milwaukee, Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m. (EDT).
 
 
Penguin Gameday Basketball Television Show Debuts January 13

Youngstown -- The Penguin Gameday Basketball Television Show with Coaches Jerry Slocum and Tisha Hill debuts on Saturday, Jan. 13 at noon on WFMJ TV 21 and WBCB, The CW.
The show will air on the networks each Saturday for the remainder of the regular season. This year's show features interviews with basketball student-athletes and coaching tips from the Penguins' coaching staffs. Air dates are Jan. 20, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24.
 
 
Penguins Extinguish Late Flames Rally for 67-62 Win

Chicago, Ill. -- Junior Heather Karner (St. Louis, Mo) scored a game-high 21 points and the Penguins staved off a late UIC rally to defeat the Flames, 67-62, on Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion. It marked the first YSU win at the UIC Pavilion since Jan. 28, 2002.

YSU improves to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League while UIC falls to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Sophomores Monique Godfrey and Nikita LaFleur each also scored in double figures for the Penguins with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Clinging to a 65-62 lead, Godfrey's two free throws with 24 seconds remaining gave YSU a five-point lead and iced the Penguins first Horizon League win of the season.

The Penguins owned nine-point advantage, 45-36, at the 15:34 mark then held the Flames scoreless for the next four minutes and bolstered their lead to a game-high 15 points, 51-36, on Velissa Vaughn's lay up at the 12:24.

After a LaFleur lay up put the Penguins back up 13, 63-50, at the 5:06 mark, the Flames began their run.

A jumper by Jacquay Holmes and two 3-pointers by Krystal Hugelier cut the deficit to seven, 65-58, with 1:37 remaining.

Jackie Parker's two charity tosses brought the Flames within five, 65-60, and her layup at with 30 seconds left cut the Penguins lead to three, 65-62.

In the first half, the Penguins shot at a 45.2 percent clip while holding the Flames to a mere 29.4 percent from the field.

Tied at 23-23 at the 8:07 mark, the Penguins scored 10 of the next 13 points to jump out to a 33-26 advantage wit 3:46 left. A 3-point play and jumper by Godfrey and a and a 3-pointer and jumper by Karner gave the Penguins its seven-point edge.

The Flames cut the YSU lead to two, 33-31, after a jumper by Jacquay Holmes and a 3-pointer by Jessie Miller, but the Penguins would not allow the Flames to score over the last 2:40 of the half.

Karner added four charity tosses over the last two-and-a-half minutes to give the Penguins a six-point lead at the half, 37-31.

The Penguins return home to host Detroit, Saturday, Jan. 13, at 5:15 p.m.
