Penguins, Oakland Separate From Field on Day One at HL Championships
Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - The Youngstown State women's golf team is tied for first place with Oakland following the first round of play at the Horizon League Championships on Friday at the Mission Inn Resort.

After the first day, YSU and Oakland have distanced themselves from the field and it will be a showdown between the two schools for the title.

On Friday, both schools carded opening round 308 and have a 16-stroke lead on third place Cleveland State (324). Green Bay is fourth with a 327, Valparaiso is fifth with a 334, UIC is sixth with a 336 and Detroit is seventh with a 337.

Dixon led the way with a four-over par 75 and is tied for third place. She had a solid back nine with birdies at 12 and 14 and shot an even-par 37. She was one-under par to open her round after a birdie at No. 2. She finished the front side with a three-over 38.

Mitzel finished with a 77 in a round that featured nine bogeys, four birdies and five pars and sits in eighth place. She was two-over par on the front side with a 37 and before carding a 40 on the back nine.

Rohanna carded an opening round 78 highlighted by one-over par round on the back nine and is tied for ninth. After carding a 40 on the front side, she had a pair of bogeys before a birdie on 18 and finishing with a one-over par performance on the back nine.

Merling is tied for ninth with Rohanna after also carding a 78. She had a strong final nine holes carding a one-under par 38 to offset a five-over par 40 on the front nine. On the back nine she had six pars, two bogeys and birdied No. 12.

Both Rohanna and Merling battled food poisoning during their rounds according to Head Coach Nate Miklos.

In her conference debut, Shutt was one-under through the first four holes and had a two-over on the front side. On the back she battled to a 43 and had an 80 for her round. Shutt is in 11th after her first round.

Oakland's Morgan Smith is the leader with a one-under par 71 while CSU's Allyson Hackman is second with a 74.

"I knew this morning with two sick players that we needed to survive today," Miklos said. "The team showed a tremendous amount of heart and are tied for first with Oakland."

The tournament resumes on Saturday morning. YSU is set to tee off starting at 8:40 a.m.
