Merling Wins Second Tournament; Penguins Finish Second at IPFW
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Senior golfer Aislynn Merling won the IPFW Spring Classic by one stroke to lead the Youngstown State women's golf team to a second-place finish at the two-day tournament.

Merling carded a two-round total of 148 with rounds of 72 and 76 as the wire-to-wire winner. She had a two stroke lead following her round on Sunday before holding on to win by shot on Monday. Finishing just behind Merling were Indianapolis' Brooke Beegle and Oakland's Elle Nichols who each had 149's.

Indianapolis won the team titled with an impressive score of 600. The Guins bested Oakland by one shot finishing with a 616 while the Golden Grizzlies had a 617. YSU had a pair of 308's in the tournament.

Carding the best second round for YSU on Monday was Emily Dixon who fired a 75. Dixon and Courtney Shutt each tied for 10th with two-round totals of 154. Dixon had a 79 on Monday while Shutt had two 77's.

Allison Mitzel finished 23rd with a 160 (80-80), Emily Rohanna was 28th with a 161 (80-81), Mia Barchetti was 38th as an individual with a 166 (85-81) and Haleigh Guerrero was 58th with a 180, also competing as an individual.

Head Coach Nate Miklos said he was pleased that YSU finished in front of the Horizon League schools at the event. YSU placed ahead of Oakland, Detroit, Valparaiso and Green Bay in two-round tournament.

"We played some good golf this weekend and continue to make progress," Miklos said. "I feel very good about where we are right now, but still have some areas we need to improve heading into conference in three weeks. Aislynn did a great job staying patient today and really stepped up at the end of her round to get the win."

The Penguins are next in action at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational hosted by Bowling Green on April 11-12.
