Haslett, Moffatt Lead Softball to Doubleheader Sweep Over Detroit

Youngstown, Ohio -- Senior Kayla Haslett pitched a six-hit complete game with five strikeouts in game two, and sophomore Brittney Moffatt went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Detroit, 10-7, 5-1, on Saturday at the YSU Softball Field.

The Penguins improve to 10-12 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League while the Titans fall to 1-20 overall and 0-3 in the league.

In the opener, the Penguins rallied from two deficits and used a seven-run sixth inning en route to the 10-7 victory.

Trailing 5-3, Moffatt lead off the bottom of the sixth with a double and scored on Haslett's single up the middle. A walk by Maria Lacatena and a single by Alexandria Gibson loaded the bases and Haslett scored the tying run when Sarah Dowd reached on an error.

Mikovich's ground out scored Alexa Schmidt with the go-ahead run and Stevie Taylor's two-run double down the left-field line pushed the YSU lead to 8-5. Moffatt roped a two-run single to right field capping the Penguins's scoring in the sixth.

The Titans attempted a comeback scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Penguins scored three times in the bottom half of the frame. Cali Mikovich doubled and scored on Miranda Castiglione's single to center to tie the game at 1-1.

Castiglione scored on Moffatt's infield single and Taylor scored on a throwing error to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead.

Detroit capitalized on three Penguins' errors in the top of the fourth and scored four times to take a 5-3 after five innings.

In the nightcap, Taylor cranked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and Dowd added a towering two-run blast to center field in the bottom of the second to account for all five of the Penguins' runs.

Haslett picked up her third win and third complete game of the season.

The Penguins host Kent State in a doubleheader, Wednesday, March 25, at 3 p.m.
