Hallapy Leads YSU at Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate
Verona, N.Y. - The Youngstown State men's golf team finished 12th out of 15 teams at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate over the holiday weekend.

The Penguins played 36 holes on Sunday in rainy, windy conditions and were on the course for 11 straight hours at the Turning Stone Resort. YSU carded total-round scores of 330 and 314 on Sunday before coming back to shoot 300 in their 18-hole round on Monday.

The Penguins were led by senior Justin Hallapy who finished tied for 35th with a three-round score of 235 on the par-72 course. Hallapy turned in rounds of 80, 77 and 78. YSU's lineup this weekend also featured three players who were competing in their very first collegiate event.

Freshman Ken Keller finished just behind Hallapy in a tie for 37th place. The Cardinal Mooney product turned in rounds of 80, 77 and 79 for a three-round total of 236.  Keller's second-round 77 featured six birdies.

Freshman Kevin Scherr had YSU's best round of the tournament, shooting an even-par 72 in the final round on Monday. The round featured six birdies and was a 16-shot improvement from his first-round 88 on Sunday. Scherr finished tied for 41st with a three-round 238.

Freshman C.J. Hughes finished 49th with a three-round score of 241. Hughes shot rounds of 83, 82 and 76 respectively. Junior Jason McQuown finished 56th with a three-round 243 (87-82-74). McQuown's two-over 74 on Monday featured 12 pars and two birdies.

The host-team, Missouri, won the tournament by an impressive 50 strokes. The Tigers finished with a three-round 844 to finish at 20 under par. UNC Wilmington finished in second place with a three-round score of 894 (+30).

The Penguins showed solid improvement over the course of the event and finished one spot ahead of fellow Horizon League member, Detroit Mercy. YSU showed a 30-stroke improvement from round one to round three and the team's third-round 300 on Monday was the sixth-lowest score of the day.

YSU will be back in action Sept. 11 and 12 for the Joe Feaganes Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
