Ross Beal Falls Short to Top Seed at U.S. Amateur Thursday, August 21 2008
Village of Pinehurst, N.C. -- After winning a playoff early Wednesday morning just to qualify for the match-play field of 64, former YSU men's golfer Ross Beal (Uniontown, Ohio) gave the number-one seed Robbie Fillmore (Provo, Utah) of BYU all he could handle for most of their match on Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Resort and County Club.
Unfortunately for Beal, Fillmore capitalized on his opportunities down the stretch to get the victory winning 3 & 2 in the third round of the U.S. Amateurs. However, Beal held his ground through the first nine holes, even holding an early lead and coming back to tie it late on the back nine.
After completing the first nine holes, Fillmore was up one. On the first three holes both golfers shot par and were all square. Beal then birdied the fourth hole to take a one up lead as Fillmore shot par.
Beal kept his lead through six holes as he and Fillmore both bogeyed the fifth and pared the sixth. Beal lost his lead on the seventh hole as he double bogeyed the hole and Fillmore shot par to tie the score. Fillmore then took a one-up lead on the eighth hole as he birdied the hole and Beal pared the hole. Both golfers double bogeyed the par three ninth hole.
On hole number 10, Fillmore extended his lead to two up as he birdied the hole while Beal shot par. Beal then came right back on the 11th hole as he chipped in a birdie from just outside a green side bunker to cut Fillmore's lead down to one. Carrying the momentum over from the eleventh hole, Beal birdied the 12th hole on a 12-foot put that put him and Fillmore all square after Fillmore pared the hole.
Fillmore quickly regained a one-up lead on the 13th hole as he shot par while Beal double bogeyed the hole. Fillmore then extended his lead to two up on hole 14 as he pared the hole while Beal bogeyed the hole. Beal then double bogeyed the 15th hole while Fillmore pared it to take a three up lead with three to go, forcing Beal to win every hole to go into a playoff.
On the 16th, and what would be the final hole of the match, both golfers bogeyed the par four hole giving Fillmore the 3 & 2 victory. Beal's round three consisted of three birdies, six pars, three bogeys, and four double bogeys.
