Penguins Conclude First Week Under Coach Pelini In Full Pads
Deion Hall and Darien Townsend
The Youngstown State football team worked out in full pads for the first time this fall on a warm Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium. The practice was the fifth of fall camp for the Penguins who are exactly four weeks shy of their season opener at Pittsburgh.

YSU worked out for more than two hours on a warm afternoon. The Penguins held special teams, individual drills and team sessions. The final three sessions in the workout featured moving-the-ball situations.

During the first drive, the top unit, which was led by QB Hunter Wells, went three-and-out as the defense turned up the heat on three straight snaps. FS Deion Hall showed some had a nice gap-sound tackle of Jody Webb in space. On third down, Steve Zaborsky and Terrell Williams applied heavy pressure for a touch sack of Wells.

QB Ricky Davis had a solid drive the the second offensive unit. Demond Hymes had a pair of strong gains before Davis threw a perfectly-placed pass to Darien Townsend along the sidelines for a gain of more than 30 yards.

Getting a final chance, the No. 1 offense converted a third-and-5 situation before Wells connected with a I'tavious Harvin on another solid throw for a pickup of 35 yards.

Pelini said he was pleased with the first week of practice because the players have had a lot thrown at them in a short period of time.

"There's a lot of learning that needs to go on," Pelini said. "A little more on defense then on offense, but we have some newcomers on offense that are hearing things for the first time. We've been able to get some good meeting time and do a lot of teaching things. We can build on things physically and I'm glad we came out of the first week healthy. That's important."

The Penguins return to practice on Monday at Stambaugh Stadium.

Season tickets are on sale by calling (330) 941-1978 or visiting the YSU Athletic Ticket Office in Stambaugh Stadium. Penguin Club memberships are available by calling (330) 941-2351.

YSU opens the season on Sept. 5 at Pittsburgh. The home opener is Sept. 12 against Robert Morris.
