The Youngstown State football team was on the field for the first time under Head Coach Bo Pelini as the Penguins worked out for just over two hours in the WATTS on Tuesday afternoon.

YSU worked out in helmets, jerseys and shorts on its first of 15 spring practices. Despite a sunny day outside, the Guins went inside to get a good amount of work done.

The practice featured individual work, 9-on-7 drills, 7-on-7 drills, two seven-minute special teams sessions, and a pair of 15-minute offense vs. defense team periods. The tempo throughout the workout seemed high

YSU returns three starters on the defensive line, three at various spots in the secondary and two at linebacker. All eight players saw action with the top unit during the workout.

The offense returns starters at quarterback, tailback, wide receiver and three starters on offensive line from last year were back today. Tackles Justin Spencer and Trevor Strickland and guard Brock Eisenhuth were back up front. Taking over at center was Cole Newsome and stepping in for an injured Dylan Colucci was Matt Bell.

In the final team period, QB Hunter Wells hit WR Andre Stubbs on a deep ball against the No. 1 defense.

Of note, the coaches wore white hats with green Y's in honor of St. Patrick's Day during the workout.

The Penguins return to practice on Thursday afternoon.

Season tickets for the upcoming 2015 season are available by calling the YSU Athletic Ticket Office at (330) 941-1YSU.
