Youngstown State’s football coaching staff knew a surefire way to get York running back Ryan Moore to commit to their program during his official visit last week: feed him 11 times over the course of two days.

“They showed me a good time, that’s for sure,” said Moore, grinning.

Moore, who was named to the North-South all-star game two weeks ago, committed to the Ohio-based school over offers from more than 10 schools, including Air Force, The Citadel, Bucknell, Lehigh and Mercer. Moore was on hand as the Penguins hosted North Dakota State Saturday, eventually losing 35-17 to the Bison, the Football Championship Series’ No. 1-ranked team.

“They ended up going three quarterbacks and losing, but that didn’t alter my decision at all,” Moore said. “They rolled out the red carpet.”

Moore visited the school unofficially during the summer, with his dad, and his mom came along last weekend, which helped seal the deal. The family was left impressed by the two-year old, $40 million business school where Moore will be spending most of his academic time.

“My mom said it was okay, then I was okay,” Moore said.

The Penguins won national titles in 1991, ‘93, ‘94 and ‘97, when former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was the school’s football coach. Youngstown is coached by Eric Wolford, who spent one season as the offensive line coach at South Carolina in 2009.

“He’s bringing the program back up,” said Moore. “They’re a top-20 team every year.”

According to Herald stat-keeping, the senior has rushed for 1,466 yards and 17 touchdowns on 237 carries. an average of 6.2 yards per touch. He’ll graduate in December and enroll at Youngstown for the spring semester. Wednesday, Moore was decked out in a red Youngstown shirt, but he still seemed to be getting used to the decision.

“It just came up,” said Moore. “I was going to wait until Thanksgiving Break, but it just felt right, just went with it.”
