Youngstown – The defensive units for each team made big plays throughout the game, but the Red offense was able to convert a few more on the offensive side of the ball in a 17-10 victory over the White in the 41st Annual Red-White Game on a chilly Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium.

Each defense forced three turnovers, but the Red's offense was able to put two touchdowns on the board after two of the White's miscues, while the White converted just one touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The White's Kevin Watts rushed for 83 yards on just four carries and quarterback Nick Wargo completed 8-of-11 passes for 60 yards, including a six-yard touchdown pass to Justin Getz late in the contest. Dante Nania completed 3-of-8 passes for 22 yards.

Teven Williams led the White defense, who surrendered just 140 yard of total offense, with eight tackles, including two tackles-for-loss.

For the Red, senior Kurt Hess completed 10-of-21 for 86 yards and had two interceptions. Demond Hymes rushed for 46 yards on 15 carries and had a two-yard touchdown run. Terry Johnson and Nate Cox led the Red defense with six tackles each while Cox had three sacks.

The Red's defense made the game's first big play when Derek Rivers' intercepted Nania's pass on White's second play from scrimmage and returned it to the White two-yard line.

Three plays later, Hymes dove in from two yards out for the game's first score and gave the Red a 7-0 lead at the 11:48 mark.

After the White failed to convert a fourth-and-8 from the Red 40, Hymes and Hess moved the Red down to the White 21, and Joey Cejudo nailed a 38-yard field goal to give the Red a 10-0 red at the 4:30 mark of the first.

On the first drive of the second quarter, the White drove 47 yards in 12 plays and got within a touchdown, 10-3, after a 43-yard field goal by Cejudo with 11:30 left in the second.

On the Red's next two possessions, Hess was picked by Julius Childs on a pass that ricocheted off Hymes at the Red 43 at the 9:39 mark, then by Jamarious Boatwright at the White 35 with 3:55 left. Neither turnover hurt the Red as the defense forced a punt after the first interception and Johnson sacked Nania as the first half ended.

The Red extended its lead to 17-3 when Aaron Edwards forced and returned a Deion Hall fumble for a touchdown from 22 yards out on the first play of the second half.

Late in the fourth quarter, Dale Peterman forced a Michael Wheary fumble which was  recovered by Boatwright and returned to midfield.

A 29-yard rush by Watts, a nine-yard run by Zach Miller and a four-yard completion from Wargo to Getz set up the Wargo-to-Getz six-yard touchdown pass for the game's final points.
