The Youngstown State football team held a quick-moving two-hour practice in helmets on Thursday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium. The workout was the first for the Penguins of fall camp.

YSU jumped right into the workout. After spending the first 30 minutes on alignments and positioning, the coaching staff ran the squad through a half-hour of individual drills.

The coaching staff kept the intensity high throughout the workout as the newcomers had to adapt quickly. Head Coach Eric Wolford said the team picked up where it left off in the spring and the reserve quarterbacks showed progress from over the summer.

The team period featured as many reps as possible for both the top and reserve units. Senior quarterback Kurt Hess led the No. 1 offense for the fourth straight fall camp. Senior wide receiver Jelani Berassa returned to practice after sitting out most of the spring with a knee injury.

The final portion of the workout was a moving-the-ball session. Sophomore tailback Demond Hymes had a nifty run agianst the defense while Hess found Michael Wheary for a big pickup. Reserve quarterback Nick Wargo hit Kevin Watts for a nice gain near the end of the practice.
