Struthers, Ohio -- Alderson-Broaddus scored eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings and held on to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 11-9 at Cene Park on Friday afternoon.

On a day where several YSU starters got the day off, the Penguins registered 17 hits but stranded 11 runners. YSU got multi-hit efforts from five players, four of whom have started fewer than 20 games. The Penguins led 6-3 through five innings before the Battlers did most of their damage in the sixth and seventh innings off reliever Russ Harless.

Alderson-Broaddus sent 17 batters to the plate in the fifth and seventh innings and registered 10 of its 15 hits. All 10 hits in those two innings were singles. Two of the runs in the sixth were unearned as an error by Padraic Williams occurred on a potential double play ball. An extra run came in when Nick DiNello lost a single in the sun in right field. He recovered to throw a runner out at the plate that would have put the Battlers ahead 9-6.

YSU was held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, its first inning without a run since the second, and Alderson-Broaddus tacked on three runs in the seventh to go ahead 11-6.

The Penguins responded with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-9, but that was as close as they would get. After DiNello was tagged out on a fielder's choice trying to go to third, Williams and Craig Goubeaux singled to load the bases with one out. Jack Graham and Jason Shirley followed with RBI singles, and Devin Higgins brought in another run with a sacrifice fly to left. The inning ended when first baseman Bobby McLaughlin made a nice play on Drew Dosch's hard liner.

The Penguins had the tying run on first base in the ninth before Bobby Williams came on to strike out Higgins for the final out.

Shirley, Higgins and Goubeaux had three hits apiece, and Williams and Graham both had two hits for YSU. Jeff Conley was 4-for-5 with a walk for Alderson-Broaddus.

Dosch hit a two-out double and scored on an error in the first to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead, but the Battlers tied the score in the third. David Bryan drew a one out walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by McLaughlin.

Shirley singled to start the third inning and went to third on Higgins' double to right center. Dosch brought Shirley in with a sacrifice fly, and Higgins scored when he stole third and came in when catcher Daniel Essian's throw went into left field. That put the Penguins ahead 3-1, and Alderson-Broaddus cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the top of the fourth.

YSU scored twice with two outs in the fourth to go up 5-2. Craig Goubeaux started the charge with a walk, and he scored on an error at the end of Jack Graham's double. Following a walk to Shirley, Devin Higgins brought Graham in on a bunt single.

A sacrifice fly for Alderson-Broaddus in the top of the fifth made the score 5-3, and a sacrifice fly by Goubeaux brought in Jake Kucek for YSU in the bottom of the fifth got the margin back to three at 6-3. The Battlers followed with their five-run sixth.

Youngstown State will be back in action on Wednesday against Kent State. First pitch at Eastwood Field is set for 3 p.m.
