YSU Hosts Kent State Today in Lone Midweek Game
The Youngstown State baseball team will begin its May schedule with a game against Kent State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Eastwood Field. It will be the Penguins' third game against the Golden Flashes in the last eight days. Live video and live stats will be available on YSUsports.com. The Penguins and Golden Flashes split a pair of seven-inning games in Kent last week with YSU winning 10-4 and losing 5-2. In game one of the doubleheader, YSU starter Blake Aquadro did not allow a hit through five innings, and the Penguins pounded out 14 hits in seven innings. Kent State flipped the script in game two as it scored five runs in the first inning and held YSU to two hits. Youngstown State's game-one victory snapped an eight-game losing skid to Kent State, and it was YSU's first win in Kent since 2005. Starting with the loss in game two to the Golden Flashes, YSU dropped its final three games of last week. The Penguins lost 7-6 to West Virginia on Wednesday in a back-and-forth bout, and they had an 11-9 setback at Cene Park to Alderson-Broaddus on Friday. Still, the Penguins actually improved in the Horizon League standings during their off weekend. Due to Milwaukee's three-game sweep of UIC and Valparaiso's sweep of Wright State, YSU is tied for second in the standings with Valpo at 7-8. The Penguins are four games behind first-place Milwaukee, lead UIC by a half game and hold a one-game advantage on Wright State. YSU and Wright State are set for a three-game series this weekend. Freshman left-hander Jared Wight will start on the mound for Youngstown State against the Golden Flashes. He started last week against West Virginia on Wednesday and did not pitch against Kent State on Tuesday as a result. Wight has made four previous starts and has not allowed more than three runs in any of them. He held the Mountaineers to a run on two hits in four innings in his last start, and he earned the win at Toledo by allowing two runs in six innings on April 17. Kent State's starter has not been announced. The Penguins and Raiders will start their three-game series with a special School Day game on Friday at 11 a.m. They'll also play at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. YSU's senior class will be recognized on Sunday in what will be their final Horizon League game at Eastwood Field.
