YSU Has Solid Day In Opener at Raleigh Relays

Raleigh, N.C. - The Youngstown State track and field program showed off its strong women's sprinters on the first day of action at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State at the Paul Derr Track.

Nina Grambling ran the fourth fastest qualyifying time - second among collegiate runners - in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.72 seconds while Ciara Jarrett had a time of 11.85 seconds to also qualify for the finals. YSU is the only school to qualify two runners for the finals in the 100-meter dash which will take place on Saturday at 12:15 p.m.

John Seaver placed fourth with a strong performance in the shot put with a toss of 16.75 meters. In the high jump, Jay Jakovina had a solid outdoor debut clearing a height of 1.95 meters to finish tying for fourth place in his section.

Eric Vendemia was 19th in the discus with a toss of 44.69 meters while Jacob Chiclowe was 25th with a throw of 41.90 meters.

For the women, Allison Roth was 21st with a throw of 12.65 meters in the shot put.

The Guins had an impressive performance in the long jump as Grambling was third with a leap of 5.54 meters and Jarrett was eighth at 5.43 meters in their section. Overall they both placed in the top 25.

In the fourth section of the women's 5,000-meter run Monica Ciarniello had a time of 17:52.43. Senior Laura Kosiorek opened up her senior campaign with a personal-best time of 14.29 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. That mark ranks her third all-time in school history.

The second day of action is set to start at 9:30 a.m.
