Good Crowd Expected as Basketball Hosts Detroit in League Home Opener Tonight

Youngstown, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team returns to the Beeghly Center for its first Horizon League home game when it hosts Detroit, Thursday, Jan. 10. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. EDT and the game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM and iHeartRadio.

Please Note
• The Titans and the Penguins are the Horizon League's top two scoring teams.
• Detroit leads the league in scoring with 77.3 points per game while YSU is second at 72.5 points per contest.

Last Time Out
• The Penguins picked up their first Horizon League win with a dramatic 68-66 win over Loyola on Jan. 5.
• The Penguins trailed by 14 in the second half and rallied for the victory.
• Junior Kendrick Perry scored 18 points and hit the game-winning shot with just five seconds left in the game.
• Senior Damian Eargle scored 20 points and had six blocks.
• Junior Kamren Belin added 13 points and made three 3-pointers.

Up Next
• The Penguins head back on the road and take on Green Bay, Thursday, Jan. 17.

• This is the 33rd meeting between Youngstown State and Detroit in a series that dates back to
• The Titans own a 24-8 advantage in the all-time series and have won seven of the last eight games.
• Last season, the Penguins won at Detroit, 64-61, on Dec. 1, 2011, and the Titans were victorious at the Beeghly, 76-74, Feb. 25, 2012.
• The Titans also defeated the Penguins, 93-76, in the second round of the Horizon League Tournament on March 2, 2012.
• The last time the Penguins defeated Detroit in the Beeghly Center was a 55-48 win in 2008.
Scouting Detroit
• Detroit is 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League after the first week of play.
• The Titans are a perfect 9-0 at home and 1-5 on the road this season.
• Detroit is coming off an 84-76 win over Green Bay on Jan. 5.
• Junior Ray McCallum leads five Titans scoring in double figures with 18.9 points per game.
• Jason Calliste is second on the squad at 13.5 points per game.
• Nick Minnerath is averaging 11.9, Doug Anderson is at 11.7 and Juwan Howard, Jr., is posting 10.9 points per game, respectively.

Perry Named HL Player of the Week
• For the second time this season and the third time in his career, junior Kendrick Perry was named the Horizon League Player of the Week.
• Last week, Perry averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and shot 54.5 percent from the field.
• He led the Penguins to a 14-point come-from-behind victory over Loyola, 68-66, on Jan. 5.
• Perry scored 18 points, including 14 in the second half, against the Ramblers.
• He also had 19 in a 65-60 loss at UIC on Jan. 2.

A Win Will
• Improve YSU to 10-6 overall on the year.
• Improve YSU to 2-1 in the Horizon League.
• Mark YSU's fifth home win of the season.
• Mark YSU's ninth win over Detroit.
• Mark the second straight season YSU began league play 2-1.

KP Moving Up
• With 18 points against Loyola on Jan. 5, junior Kendrick Perry moved into 26th place on the YSU all-time scoring list.
• He needs nine more to move into 25th place, 22 for 24th and 38 for 23rd.
• Perry needs 63 more to become the 22nd player in school history to score 1,100 points in a career.

Second Biggest Comeback in Slocum Era
• The victory from 14 points down against Loyola on Jan. 5 is the second-largest second-half comeback in the Jerry Slocum era at YSU.
• The Penguins trailed the Ramblers, 50-36, with 14:10 left and won, 68-66.
• The largest second-half deficit the Penguins overcame was 18 on Dec. 21, 2005, against James Madison at the Beeghly Center.
• The Penguins trailed the Dukes, 47-29, with 15:24 remaining and won, 72-65.

Belin Two Big Games
• Over the last two games, junior Kamren Belin played the way he started the season.
• Belin reached double figures in both games last week with 11 against UIC and 13 against Loyola.
• He averaged 12 points and three rebounds per game.
• Belin also connected on 44.4 percent of his 3-point attempts and made three in the 68-66 win over Loyola on Jan. 5.

Quick to 10
• With a win over Detroit on Thursday, the Penguins would reach 10 wins in their first 16 games.
• The last time Youngstown State reach 10 wins that quickly was in 2000-01.
• That year the Penguins started 10-6 after 16 games and 11-6 after 17.

Allen Second With 180
• With four 3-pointers against UIC, senior Blake Allen became just the second player in school history with 180 career 3-pointers.
• Allen has made 180 career 3's and needs 19 more to break the record of 198.
• The record of 198 was set by Craig Haese from 1997-2001.
• Allen leads the Horizon League with 42 3-pointers made.

More Millennium Man
• Kendrick Perry is just the 16th YSU player to score at least 1,000 points before his senior year.
• He became the 14th player to reach the mark during his junior season.
• Perry is just the sixth Division I junior to score 1,000 points at YSU.
• He also became just the 15th player since YSU joined Division I to score at least 1,000 career points.
• The last player to accomplish the feat was Vytas Sulskis (2007-11).
• The last junior to reach 1,000 points was Quin Humphrey in 2005-06.

Allen Among Nation's Best
• Senior Blake Allen is one of the country's best guards regarding assist-to-turnover ratio.
• Allen leads the Horizon League and ranks 10th nationally with a 3.8 assist-to-turnover mark.
• He has 42 assists and just 13 turnovers in 15 games.
• His averages are 3.3 assists and 0.9 turnovers per game.
• Allen also ranks ninth in the Horizon League in assists per game.

Two More Searching for 1,000
• With junior Kendrick Perry becoming the 33rd YSU player to score 1,000 points, seniors Blake Allen and Damian Eargle are trying to become the 34th and 35th players to match that feat.
• Eargle needs 133 more points while and Allen is 219 away.
• Eargle has scored 1,131 points in his college career, but 268 were at UNC-Greensboro.
• The last time two YSU players scored 1,000 career points in the same season was in 2000-01 when  Desmond Harrison and Craig Haese reached the plateau.

Eargle's Block Party
• Senior Damian Eargle already owns the YSU and Horizon League career blocks records with 260.
• Eargle has recorded a block in 17 straight games dating back to last season.
• He has also blocked at least one shot in 45 of the last 47 games.
• In his 76-game career at YSU, Eargle has tallied a block in 71 contests.
• Eargle also leads the Horizon League with 130 career blocks in league-games only.

Allen Gets Second Double-Double
• More known for his 3-point shooting prowess, senior Blake Allen recorded the second double-double of the season and his career against UIC on Jan. 2.
• Allen scored 12 points on four 3's and snagged 10 boards against the Flames.
• It also marked the third time in his career that he posted at least 10 rebounds.

KP Named to Cousy Watch List
• Junior Kendrick Perry was named to the Watch List for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award.
• Perry is one of 80 nominees and leads the Penguins with 16.5 points and 4.5 assists per game.
• Perry ranks sixth all-time with 310 career assists.
KP Second With 1,000, 300, 130
• Junior Kendrick Perry became just the second player in school history to post 1,000 points, 300 assists and 130 steals in a career.
• The only other YSU player to accomplish that feat was Bruce Timko from 1982-86.
• Perry has 1,037 career points, 310 assists and 137 steals.
• With 13 more steals, Perry will become the only player in school history with 1,000 points, 300 assists and 150 steals.

Efficient Guins
• Youngstown State has three players ranked in the top 10 in the Horizon League when it comes to field-goal percentage.
• Sophomore Shawn Amiker leads the team and ranks second in the circuit with a .523 field-goal percentage.
• Freshman Bobby Hain is third in the league at .518.
• Senior Damian Eargle ranks sixth with a .480 field-goal percentage.

Eargle Reaches 1,000 Points
• With 17 points against James Madison on Nov. 20, senior Damian Eargle scored the 1,000th point in his collegiate career.
• Eargle has scored 867 points at Youngstown State and had 268 in 2008-09 at UNC-Greensboro for a total of 1,135.
• He needs 123 more to become a 1,000-point scorer at YSU.

Perry Among League Leaders
• Junior Kendrick Perry is having an all-league caliber season.
• Perry ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring with 16.5 points per game.
• He also fifth with 4.5 assists per game and ranks fifth with a .857 free-throw percentage.
• Perry is fourth in the Horizon League with 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.
• He is also tied for fourth with 1.5 steals per game.

Eargle Defensive Production
• Senior Damian Eargle is playing like a defensive player-of-the-year candidate.
• Eargle ranks sixth nationally and leads the Horizon League with 3.5 blocks per game.
• The Youngstown, Ohio, native is second in the league with 6.8 rebounds per game.
• He is also second with 5.3 defensive rebounds per game.
• Eargle is tied for 10th in the league with 1.3 steals per game.
• Against Bowling Green on Dec. 1, Eargle grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, including 14 defensive boards.

Takin' Care of Business
• The YSU trio of guards of Blake Allen, DJ Cole and Kendrick Perry take care of the ball well.
• Combined, the three have dished out 156 assists compared to just 68 turnovers.
• That works out to an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.3.
• Allen leads the league at 3.8, Perry is fourth at 2.3 and Cole is sixth at 1.7.
