Penguins Open Season With Tournament Win at Colgate Invitational

YSU was in fifth place following an opening round 309 on Saturday, but took the 36-hole lead with a second-round 297 by five shots ahead of Bucknell. On Sunday, the Guins were able to maintain the lead and win by four shots with a three-round total of 911. Cornell was second with a 915 while Bucknell was third and Colgate and Lafayette tied for fourth.
To win the event, the Guins placed a pair of golfers in the top 10 and four in the top 19.
Leading the way was D.J. Holub who tied for seventh place with a three-round 226 (75-76-75). Just behind Holub was Brandon Pluchinsky who was ninth with a 227 (80-72-75).
Redshirt freshman Jason McQuown ended up finishing 19th with a three-round total of 234. McQuown tied for the lowest round of the tournament with a second-round 69 that left him in third place. Tying McQuown for 19th was Bill Gaffney who had rounds of 78, 80 and 76 for his 234.
Steven Sveda placed 37th for YSU with a three-round total of 238 (78-81-79) while Dominic Carano was 55th with a 243.
The Penguins are next in action on Sept. 14-15 when they compete at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
