Penguin News
The 11th-ranked Youngstown State football team will play host to No. 7 South Dakota State in the Penguins' annual Homecoming game on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium. Kickoff for the contest is set for 4 p.m. The game is available on WKBN 570 AM, iHeartRadio, ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN App.
YSU (3-2 overall, 1-1 in the MVFC) is coming off a tough 31-29 loss to fourth-ranked Illinois State last Saturday. The teams combined for 31 fourth-quarter points after scoring 29 in the first three periods.
YSU trailed 7-0 in the first quarter on a 26-yard interception for a touchdown by Illinois State's Josh Burch. The Guins struck right back to pull within 7-6 on a three-yard run by Shane Kuhn, but trailed 17-12 after three quarters. Early in the fourth, Kuhn scored on a one-yard run to give YSU its first lead of the game at 20-17. But three plays later, Illinois State answered and regained a 24-20 advantage on a Tre Roberson to Anthony Warrum 39-yard scoring toss. YSU crept back within one following a career-long 49-yard field goal by Zak Kennedy, but the Redbirds pushed the lead back to 31-23 on a 19-yard score by Marshaun Coprich. YSU's final drive was jump started by a 54-yard kickoff return by Jody Webb. Starting at the ISU 45, the Guins covered that in 10 plays when Wells found Martin Ruiz on a 13-yard scoring toss with 32 seconds left. On the two-point try, Wells apparently scored on a keeper, but video replay ruled him down short of the end zone and Illinois State hung on for the win.
South Dakota State (4-1 and 1-1) picked up its first conference win of the season knocking off Indiana State 24-7 last Saturday in Brookings. The Jackrabbits took a 14-0 lead at halftime and led 14-7 after three quarters. SDSU scored 10 points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the fourth quarter to push its lead to 24-7. Reserve quarterbacks Taryn Christion and Dalton Douglas threw for 247 yards in the win. Christion added 99 yards on the ground on 16 attempts.
The Jackrabbits own a 10-6 advantage in the all-time series, but the Penguins won the most recent meeting. Last year in Brookings, YSU picked up a 30-27 win to stop a six-game SDSU winning streak in the series. The Penguins' last home win in the series was in 2007.

Illinois State Recap
YSU came up just short in a tough 31-29 loss to Illinois State last Saturday night at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins trailed 31-23 late before pulling within 31-29 with 32 seconds remaining after Hunter Wells threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Martin Ruiz. On the two-point conversion try, Wells found an opening and dove into the end zone for a would-be tying score. However, replay determined that Wells' knee was down before he crossed the plane and the score was whipped out.
In the fourth quarter the teams combined for 31 points after 29 in the first three quarters.
YSU trailed 17-12 early in the fourth before taking its first lead of the game at 20-17 on a one-yard run by Shane Kuhn and two-point conversion pass from Wells to Jacob Wood.
But three plays later, Illinois State regained the lead 24-20 on 39-yard pass from Tre Roberson to Anthony Warrum. YSU trailed 24-23 following a 49-yard Zak Kennedy field goal, but ISU pushed its lead to eight on a 19-yard run by Marshaun Coprich with 4:18 left.
Last Year vs. SDSU
YSU seized the lead from South Dakota State just before halftime and did not let it slip from its grasp in a 30-27 win last October at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.
The Guins scored 20 second-quarter points as Martin Ruiz and Hunter Wells scored via the ground and Wells hit Jody Webb on a 22-yard scoring toss. Wells' touchdown came just 11 seconds before halftime and put YSU in front 23-20 at the break.
That was the score until midway through the fourth quarter when Wells threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jelani Berassa with 8:21 remaining.
YSU allowed the Jackrabbits to pull within 30-27 with 4:16 remaining and after being forced to punt, Joey Cejudo pinned SDSU at its two-yard line with 2:00 left. On fourth-and-19, Julius Childs broke up a pass that would have been an SDSU first down with 57 seconds left to seal the victory.
Series History
The Penguins snapped a seven-game South Dakota State winning streak in the series with a 30-27 win last year in Brookings.
The Jackrabbits have won 10 of the 16 all-time meetings between the programs in a series that dates back to 1942.
YSU's last win in Youngstown came in 2007 when the Penguins won a 23-17 contest. Since that time the Jacks have three straight, the last of which ended in a near blizzard on Nov. 23, 2013.
Pelini's 100th Game
YSU Head Coach Bo Pelini will coach his 100th game on Saturday when the Penguins take on South Dakota State.
Pelini is coaching just his sixth game with the YSU program after leading Nebraska in 94 contests as a head coach. Pelini's first game as a head coach was in 2003 when the Huskers defeated Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl. He served in an interim role that evening replacing Frank Solich.
Pelini was Nebraska's head coach from 2008-14 and won at least nine games every season.
Defense Ranks Highly
The Youngstown State defense is fourth in the FCS in total defense and still leads the nation in passing defense through games as of Oct. 10.
