Despite a cool afternoon the Youngstown State football team took their practice outside to Stambaugh Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The physical workout saw the defense force turnovers in all situations.

The Penguins were on the turf for just over two hours in full pads. The workout was the fifth of the spring session. YSU will return outside on Saturday morning for the sixth practice of the spring.

On Thursday, the defense was in full-tackle mode for the first time this spring. Linebacker Terry Johnson had some impressive stops during one series. The defense did a good job of forcing fumbles while newcomer Deion Hall intercepted a pair of passes. The second team defensive line had success against the second offensive unit.

YSU took advantage of some class commitments to mix-up the starters and reserves on the offensive front, which was something Head Coach Eric Wolford was eager to see.

On the red-zone situations, Kurt Hess connected with Michael Wheary on a 20-yard scoring toss. On the final sequence, the defense stopped the offense short of the end zone as Demond Hymes, who appeared to score on third down, was stopped shy of the goal line on a fourth-down play.
